WAKE UP! IT'S GEORGE JEWETT TROPHY WEEK!
I realize as fans we are all focused on STAEE and the disturbing, execrable behavior of its fanbase.......but we have a trophy to win this week (and of course next week).
Here it is MGOBOARD! The Goerge Jewett Trophy. Get to know her because, crosses fingers, she will share a happy home in our case next to the lil brown jug.

Right. I did not show an image.
So after an exhaustive 7 second google search it looks like there are no images of the actual trophy. I am going to comfortably assume it will just be a bust of George holding the Heisman (something like what you see here).
GO BLUE! BEAT THE 'CATS

Recently created trophies usually seem phony, more like marketing than rivalry-driven.
But this one feels right.
Go, Blue! Bring George Jewett home.

Bring home Big George!!! *Competitive face emoji*

So it will be a statue of Ernie Davis holding his Heisman Trophy?
October 18th, 2021 at 7:49 AM ^
Totally. That was part of my joke. Here is a pic of George. He is not Ernie Davis. For some reason that image came up when searching "George Jewett Trophy" (part of an article of the same name curiously).

Never liked the idea of a trophy that was created expressly for that purpose: artificial and imposed. Real trophies are *taken*, not made - prizes captured from the foes, as it were. Minnesota "took" a water jug from us after we beat them (though much of the details may be embellishment added to hype up the rivalry), but that led to an excellent college trophy.
I think Jewett is certainly worthy of such an honor (and probablyhaving his name on some buildings/fields/etc.), but this still feels forced & contrived.

Michigan and Northwestern first played on October 29, 1892 in Chicago. In that game, halfback George Jewett, Michigan's first African-American player, kicked a field goal and led Michigan's play on both offense and defense. Despite Jewett's effort, Northwestern prevailed by a 10–8 score.
Jewett transferred to Northwestern in 1893 and became that school's first African-American football player. Jewett scored Northwestern's only touchdown in its 1893 loss to Michigan.
Maybe the loser gets the trophy?

It’s artificial, but for an artificial trophy it has a good purpose. Most of the others are just cheap knockoffs of the Little Brown Jug.

if it means something to the players then it's cool.
feels forced to me as well but hoping we never lose it

I'm ready, with the little exception called work this week. Win the game and the trophy.

I NEED to see an image of this trophy. I have teams of artisans standing by ready for it's fabrication!
October 18th, 2021 at 8:27 AM ^
state is knocking at the door but I'm quite excited for this game. The season goes so fast and this ia chance for UM to hit 7-0 for the first time in quite some time. I'd also guess in the last 30 years 7-0 hasn't happened a ton for a variety of reasons
In either case...excited to see them take another step this week.
October 18th, 2021 at 8:50 AM ^
In the last 30 years I only see 2016 (9-10), 2006 (11-0), and 1997 (12-0). Technically, 1992 had no losses but did have three ties. So I guess it sort of counts?

Looking forward to the game. Going with my daughter, could be her last game for a few years as she will be graduating and has chosen to go to GVSU. Couldn't convince her to go to UofM.

This trophy is beautiful! And it's a great story. I'm glad this is a thing.
Thanks for the link.

Thanks.
The long coat though makes him look like one of the country's Founding Fathers. Y'know, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Jewett.

Great depiction of a Warrior Poet.

The trophy is finished and on its way now to Ann Arbor! Let's keep it there. There is an article in the Football Yearbook about Dr. Jewett and the trophy. Includes images of the plastic mold... I'm new to comments, so not sure if a pdf can be uploaded, but maybe someone can link?

Lets win this game by the 2nd QTR!

7 seconds? Sick brag, overachiever.

Died at age 38? Way too young.

What number did GJ wear, so I can run out and buy his jersey?

No jersey numbers listed then. So order accordingly.

That 2015 game at the Big House when we were ranked #18 and NW was #13 and we went on to absolutely destroy them 38-0, starting from the jump with a Chesson kickoff return TD, was one of the more fun home games of the Jim Harbaugh era. Let’s pound them 56-0 this week.

UPDATE: REAL IMAGE.
A lot to take in honestly. Here's to hoping Dr. Jewett can merely observe from the sidelines and not be hoisted.

Just fyi - this photo is of the 24" plastic stand-in. The actual trophy is full bronze and 36" tall. It will arrive later this week. It's beautiful... and well-deserved.

I'm glad to see a George Jewett getting this kind of recognition. His grandson, Coleman Jewett, was my junior high assistant principal, and a great guy (with the exception of the time he sentenced me to help clean the cafeteria for a week after school following a lunchtime food fight, which seemed unjust at the time though as the years pass I see his point).
October 18th, 2021 at 7:01 PM ^
Coleman was also my grade principal at Tappan, a flat-out super person!

Met the dude who designed the trophy at a tailgate a few weeks ago. Even though there are no public photos at this time, I think a lot of people are gonna be happy with the design/execution.

Thanks! - It turned out really well. I just spoke to Jon Jansen about it for In the Trenches this week. I'm so honored to be a part of this and excited for it to arrive to Schembechler Hall on Thursday.

I simply want bragging rights in my own home… My daughter is a NU sophomore and I have no interest in eating crow for 3 years after taking her to a majority of UM games for the last 15 years. GO BLUE!
