Time to cancel the Muppets?
I have thought for awhile that the whole Muppets thing has run its course.
Regardless, if MGoBlog continues this practice please provide appropriate warnings. Surprised MGoBlog isn’t on top of this.

Wow. Never seen these before. If Wilkins coffee is still around I'd buy some.

Muppets never die.

Muppets mean we did something good. They are happiness. Why do you hate happiness?

What is wrong with Yooper? Has he gone insane?
Take your woke BS and fly it somewhere the sun doesn't shine.

Easy boys. Not trying to take away your fun or to advocate same. Was pointing out how things may be going too far. Sarcasm fail for sure. Mea culpa. I believe in celebrating good things happening to Michigan teams.

no good deed goes unpunished. the humor took a set-up that was one-step too far for most here.

Well, I fell for it and thus recant my vitriolic response posted above. Unfortunately it hit too close to a nerve as I've had it up to here watching every aspect of our culture being sanitized by the Great Church Lady.

I don’t comment on this blog anymore and this is why.
too many of you on here and you’re taking over the world one cult member at a time.
there will be a reckoning. You can only cry about everything for so long before it all blows up in your face. ✌?

You should definitely go back to not commenting. That'll show us.

what a stupid thread.
February 21st, 2021 at 9:08 PM ^
how did the muppets thing start here?
February 21st, 2021 at 9:39 PM ^
2008 Wisconsin football game. Brian had just discovered the Muppet clips of “Temptation” and “Hawaiian War Chant” that week and jubilantly posted them after we won that game, starting a new tradition.

Anyone who wants to cancel the muppets could actually make the world a better place if they jumped off a cliff and cancelled themselves.

We all know that Fozzie Bear killed a guy over a gambling debt, but what did the Muppets do other than that?

We all know that Fozzie Bear killed a guy over a gambling debt, but what did the Muppets do other than that?
Meh.
Fozzie Bear is just the muscle.
The 2 old guys in the balcony are the real masterminds of the operation.

Statler & Waldorf are awesome. Waldorf is the chubbier guy.
For the best Statler & Waldorf check out the Milton Berle episode. They trade barbs constantly and the boys in the balcony get the better of it. Story goes they went off script a bit and like many guests Uncle Miltie forgot he was talking to puppets. I would have liked to seen the outtakes.

So crazy. Here I am trying to introduce muppets to my young children. And society says I’m doing the wrong thing.
February 21st, 2021 at 9:43 PM ^
A disclaimer being put on a show hardly indicates society is saying you’re doing it wrong.

Do we have any examples of what the negative stereotype content actually is?
February 21st, 2021 at 9:26 PM ^
The OP is making a mountain out of a proverbial mole hill. No one has canceled the Muppets, they simply are placing warnings at the start of certain episodes that contain cultural stereotypes. Big deal.
Fear not, MGoDenizens; the Muppets will be a fixture of MGoBlog forever... or at least until Disney lawyers decide that it is some type of copyright infringement.
February 21st, 2021 at 9:29 PM ^
Sorry, OP - so few people reading the link and getting the point:
Disney's warning for Muppet show:
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures,” the warning reads. “These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversations to create a more inclusive future together.”

Translation: "We know our founder was anti-semitic and half our original cartoons were racially insensitive. We know we currently kowtow to China for the dollar bills. Please ignore that and keep giving us your money. Here, we'll even put this message that points out how bad things like racism are bad. We won't take it down (you know bc of the money), but we'll point out how moral we are so you can feel good about giving us your money".

As liberal as this board is I’m surprised people aren’t upvoting this.

I would not say this board is liberal. Seems fairly evenly split actually.
February 22nd, 2021 at 8:41 AM ^
not remotely close to a 50/50 split, as was evidenced 10,000 times in the covid threads, among other places.

When will this whole "cancel" thing run its course? Everyone's doing it, not just one group of people, and it's getting tiring. There's a danger to groupthink, especially when it's all over the place.
February 21st, 2021 at 10:06 PM ^
a person is smart and is capable of making their own decisions about social issies. people are stupid and dangerous. the culture of following blindlly because someone says what you want to hear has to be broken. the question is how do you break that control???
February 21st, 2021 at 10:20 PM ^
There is no canceling happing here. Disney is not canceling the Muppets, they are doing the opposite: bringing old reels out of the mothballs and streaming the content.
They are adding 12-second warnings to the start of episodes that contain racial stereotypes so that sensitive types can turn the channel. It is pretty brilliant if you ask me.

I’m just going to come out and say it. I never got the muppets. Just never enjoyed the series or characters. I immigrated to this country when I was 5 around peak popularity time and it just didn’t click with me.
im mostly surprised anyone is still watching old ass shows when there is so much better content out there.
that being said, I’m for the Mgoblog tradition. It’s a thing of joy. And I’m for joy.
February 21st, 2021 at 10:27 PM ^
I never found the muppets to be that great either. Nor did I find Sesame Street to be memorable.
I think it’s largely reflective of the fact that I had Cartoon Network and Nick when older people did not...I can seriously get behind Dexter, Cow and Chicken, Johnny Bravo, I am Weasel, Powerpuff Girls, Rocko’s Modern Life, and the Angry Beavers all day.
February 21st, 2021 at 10:38 PM ^
Well, Muppets >>> Sesame Street to be sure. But they were different shows meant for different audiences.
Also, Muppets over every single show you mentioned. Powerpuff Girls weren't bad. Not Looney Tunes of course.

And exactly WHAT do you have against Space Ghost and his antagonizers Zorak, Lokar, and Moltar, and his lovable buddy Brak?
February 22nd, 2021 at 12:26 AM ^
Space Ghost is awesome. He's a better interviewer than Letterman.

Wow this is dumb. When our family had dinner together on Saturday evenings we timed it specifically to line up with the Muppets. Saw damn near every episode that way. Not a thing about it was offensive.
Fave episodes: Beverly Sills, Milton Berle among others.
February 22nd, 2021 at 6:17 AM ^
"Not a thing about it was offensive" to you.
There were things in the shows that apparently offended others, and the content warnings just acknowledge that. That's all. I don't see the fuss. They aren't censoring the show.
If you find the Muppets offensive you better learn to lug a fainting couch with you all the time.
The only people who could find the Muppets offensive are those who get a frisson of righteousness at being offended.
You one of those people?
