In Jerry's last game, he recovered a fumble on the one, but it was called a touchdown for USC.  See the ball half way to the turf well before the goal line.  UM lost 17-10 and USC ended #1 in UPI.  Athlon Sports rated this one of the 15 worst officiating moments a few years ago.

According to the NY Times, "The reruns of the play as recorded by television cameras provided considerable doubt, but the camera angles did not duplicate the line of sight of the head linesman standing on one far end of the scrimmage line. The umpire, Don Mason, standing 5 yards in the end zone, signaled a fumble, but the referee, Paul Kamanski, stuck with Marchman's decision. Marchman, however, was not in a good spot to see the ball breaking away from White's grasp."

I was 16 and remember that all too well. I was listening to the game on the radio while driving across the Whitestone Bridge in NY with a vintage sailing dinghy strapped to the top of the car. The racing had been canceled because of too much wind and ice (winter dinghy racing is known as frostbiting, for good reason) so we were heading back from Long Island to Westchester and home. A big blast of wind was blowing the boat on top so much it started to slide and we had to stop mid-bridge to tie it down more securely. Meanwhile I had the game on the radio and was screaming at the refs… A very memorable New Year's Day.

Jerry Meter was a super hard-hitting inside backer. Those defenses were really fun to watch.

With replay, I hope a play like this is never “mis-called” again.

It could have changed the outcome of the game.  And, IIRC, during a post game news conference / interview - Coach Schembechler said - “You must see leather.”

As bad of a call as there ever was…

I played softball with Jerry in the early ‘80s.  He played the short center fielder you could use in A2 softball back then.  Football players are impressive athletes up close and in person.  He was just a fun guy, too, and Hollywood Handsome, ladies…
