MBB: Stojakovich outreach?
Not sure where the room comes from on our now burgeoning roster, but have always felt this legend’s son should be on our radar given what Dusty wants to do and his availability. Stanford credits transfer too!
Only could mean Jace, Nimari, or Goldin might not be on team.
Everything indicates that Goldin is going to be a Michigan Wolverine. I wouldn't worry too much about him if there was a worry, Abson wouldn't have canceled the visit. May is recruiting for 2 wing players at the 3/4 in addition to Goldin.
Jace, Nimari, GW3, Cheddar, and Phat Phat might not be on the team. None of the Juwan players are considered to be safe.

Based on ... what, exactly?
Dylan from UMHoops has sources within the program. Dotman, who is very well connected within the program, shows up occasionally to UMHoops indicating that the situation is fluid regarding the SG log jam and the scholarship count. They're well connected and May is continuing to recruit as if the scholarship count isn't full if you include Goldin.
I see.
Question for the board: is there really a 13 scholarship limit given the NIL resources potentially available? It seems like the 85 scholarship limit for FB is toast--same for MBB?
Yeah if Goode was a walk on last year then the grad transfers could come as walk ons. I think there are a few rules about who can be a walk on. I’m a little fuzzy on them because they just voted on a new rule that “transfers are guaranteed 4 years or until graduation which every comes first.” But it’s unclear if this means every transfer you take gets a scholarship or just once you give a transfer scholarship you can’t rescind it. And either way that specific rule only applies to anyone who graduated HS in 2023 and beyond. There’s also a rule about anyone who took an official visit in HS can’t be a walk on. And then of course the big ten rule about once you are on scholarship you get 4 years. Also unclear how the Covid free year impacts any of that. GW3 may have also given up his 4 year promise by entering the portal and then removing himself from it. Again, kinda murky there.
So trying to make sense of all that, I would guess that any of the grad students could be converted to walk ons at a minimum. All the freshman will be on scholarship for sure. Everyone else is a maybe.

First off when you enter the portal you dont lose your scholarship and can return to school anytime. Now it may not be good for some players as certain coaches might hold a grudge and football is a little different when it comes to walk ons. Also last I knew scholarships are based off conference rules. Big18 is when you sign as a freshman you get 4 years of play and 5 years if you redshirt, transfers get what ever they come in as to graduate or 1 extra year if they choose to have a redshirt year. If they come in as a Junior they get 2 years. Grads get one year or however many playable years they have left, depending if they have had injuries. SEC which could have changed was on a year to year basis. Might have changed but that was a couple years ago last I knew.
Wrong, when a player enters the portal, their scholarship with the former team is no longer guaranteed even though it's for 4 years.
Yeah it seems like there are a few incorrect statements in there.
Like, if you redshirt your freshman year, you aren't guaranteed a fifth year. You're guaranteed the initial 4, then the coach is welcome to give you the "firm handshake" instead of giving you a 5th year.
I think the one difference with football vs. basketball is a lot of players in football are okay with waiting 2-3 years to develop before getting an opportunity to start. In basketball, that’s a lot less likely to be the case. If a player isn’t getting substantial minutes by their sophomore year (or in the case of a touted recruit, their freshman year), they’re likely to transfer. While we can go over the 13 scholarship limit, I doubt we’ll see it happen often because there just won’t be enough minutes to go around.
April 25th, 2024 at 10:33 AM ^
Yeah I agree. And I think Tom Izzo even said something about how it isn’t worth using all 13 scholarships because you just trigger transfers from guys who don’t play.
I think there is a difference in this situation though because you have a new coach and 3 guys who probably know they aren’t getting minutes either way combined with a few guys who will be out of eligibility. So even if you have 16 guys on the roster, the path to playing time is not as crowded as it would be on a team run by a coach in his 5th year

In theory yeah but asking an out of state recruit to cover their almost 100K of tuition and fees seems like a big ask. Esspecially if another school is offering similar NIL and a scholarship.
Didn't know that about Dylan. Always thought that he was remarkably far from the program, given all the time that he has been around it. But that may have been to preserve some healthy critical distance.
April 24th, 2024 at 10:47 PM ^
Even without Dylan, dotman lays it out.
April 25th, 2024 at 12:45 AM ^
I am sure he is going to get the best people possible which might lead to someone leaving but he isnt going to force a player out. Sure he has spoken with Jace about becoming a walkon.
Seems odd that GW3 would withdraw from the portal if that was the case for him.
That was before a rash of commits last weekend. He may be seeing that there's no room for him to play
April 25th, 2024 at 12:41 AM ^
That is an absurd comment about them not being on the team. First of May wouldnt do that and 2nd if any coach did that you know how shitty that would look and how bad that would hurt us in the long run with recruits or transfers.
April 24th, 2024 at 11:57 PM ^
We still have room and like in football with NIL scholarships are not set in stone.
Stanford credits transfer too!
Myles Hinton might want to read this thread.
He had ~60 credits transfer, but not ~78.
Thanks for the info, I will admit I misread it and assumed the OP meant all credits transfer.
April 25th, 2024 at 10:32 AM ^
Can't you only transfer 60 as a max, since it's 120 to graduate and they want at least 2 "years" at Michigan?
IIRC Jace came in as a walk-on. He might have been on scholarship last year because we were a couple under the 13 limit but pretty sure he's not on a four year deal.
The original plan was to bring him on as a walk on but when we didn’t fill our spots he was brought on scholarship from day 1.
He came in on scholarship and has been on scholarship all 4 years so far. No obligation to keep him on scholly for his fifth year.
Any player who gets a scholarship as a freshman gets a four year guarantee. At least they do in the Big Ten. But as pointed out below, Jace has already gotten four years.
Move Jace to walk-on and let's ride!
Actually, this would probably mean Burnett is gone, Howard stays on scholarship and my hope of a true freshman F doesn't come to fruition.
C: Goldin (25 mpg)
2. Wolf (20 mpg)
F: Tschetter (20 mpg)
2. Walters (20 mpg)
3. ????? (redshirt)
G: Jones (25 mpg)
2. Burnett / Stojakovich (25 mpg)
3. Howard (0 mpg) *walk-on*
G: Gayle (25 mpg)
2. Washington III (5 mpg)
3. Pippen (redshirt)
PG: Donaldson (25 mpg)
2. Brooks (10 mpg)
3. Cason (redshirt)
Tschetter would not start nor play 20 minutes. He's likely being recruited over by a transfer forward. Walters is slated to start
I think Tschetter’s 3 point proficiency, loyalty to the program, and his grit is going to keep him in the mix. I know his D sucks but have always wondered what he’d be like on a more competent team. I think he has value and I think May’s style in the Big Ten requires a lot of bodies.
April 24th, 2024 at 11:17 PM ^
I'll give you his 3 point shooting, but I really doubt loyalty to program is earning any playing time from a new coach turning around a dumpster fire (or any coach, really). The best options to win will play, and I really don't see tschetter getting close to starter minutes. Every other role looks average to great on D, can't have an obvious liability out there because he has grit.

Will T. will get some run as long as he shoots it like last year and has improvement everywhere else. He isnt some scrub like many on here are acting like he is. In case u havent been following Will has been the leader of the few that were left and a person Dusty already trusts. Not sure if you been around campus or the team but those are the whispers coming out of the BBall program. Most likely he will be one of the captians of the team this fall
April 25th, 2024 at 12:27 AM ^
First, thanks for your contributions here. Second, weak sauce for downvoting a different opinion.
that's great if he is a captain. I hope he does really well. My point still stands that talent and bball IQ will buy him playing time, not a sense of loyalty. FYI, most haven't been around campus or the players that post on here, doesn't mean we aren't allowed/qualified to have any opinions.

Walters is? As far as I been told, no formal practice or depth chart has been made up. So far only 3 starting positions are locked up. Tre, Gayle and VG.
Can’t tell if it’s a hedge (in case Goldin falls through) or just more ‘cruits, but blogosphere is also saying May is talking to Duke 5 star frost Powers too who is in the portal. My man May is talking to EVERYONE.
Just another really nice fit too. Love how keen May has been with roster building. Not just grabbing anyone, grabbing dudes that fit his JB-esque style game plan. It’s like a young JB in the transfer era. Now if he is as competent game manager/tactician, who boy.
April 25th, 2024 at 12:00 AM ^
Does not mean Burnett is gone. Pretty sure he isnt going to add his name to the transfer pool this late in. Stoj is going to be only a sophomore.
April 25th, 2024 at 12:18 AM ^
Tre, Gayle and Jones are going to be playing 30 minutes a night on most nights. Phat Phat will most likely redshirt along with Cason. Pippen will be the freshman to get the most minutes due to his high upside. Also Jones will play PG quite a bit like he did for North Texas but this offense isnt going to use its pg like Dug was used.
April 25th, 2024 at 10:38 AM ^
Normally redshirts don’t matter but I was hoping they redshirt at least 2 freshman because the 2025 cycle is almost over, as crazy as that is, and May hasn’t had the time to build that class while he’s been trying to fill the roster.
April 25th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
Recruits at Phat Phat level don't typically redshirt. He may not play a lot, but I don't expect him to redshirt.
April 25th, 2024 at 11:27 AM ^
Most likely scenario is Burnett or Jace spots are potentially up for grabs. It would be surprising to me if May asked GW3 and Chedds to come back and then later force them out. Doesn't feel that's how Dusty rolls IMO. They may want to leave with the new players, but given Dusty has said he might be looking for one or two more and there has been no announcement on anyone remaining on last years roster most logical is walk-on status and maybe Burnett on the line.

Too big of an academic risk. Not likely to clear admissions.

Get all the talent you can. For numbers, what's the concern? I thought scholarships don't matter any more. And dude has the same family / financial background as Jace.
