March Madness Day One

Submitted by VCavman24 on March 21st, 2024 at 3:59 PM

The first day of March Madness is upon us!  While not as exciting with our Wolverines missing the Big Dance for the second year in a row, it is still a fun event.

So far 3-seed Creighton is the only top seed to take care of business, beating Akron handily.  11-seed Duquesne upset 6-seed BYU, and some no-name agricultural school beat Mississippi State.  14-seed Morehead State is leading 3-seed Illinois by one point with lots of time remaining.

What games are you watching today?  What upsets are you picking?  Who will win the whole thing?

That was an awful first half for Mr. Medved.  Let's see how he adjusts for the second half.  CSU looks tiered and will lose this game, but let's see if the players stay with the plan or start shooting 3s from the half-court line.

Uhh 11?! first half points? 25-3 run for UT?

Can’t put that on Medved as the Rams are not getting bad looks but it’s safe to say their balls just haven’t dropped… at least not until they mature a little bit.

Glad they called that elbow to the head a flagrant 1 on UT. That was the second time in the game I heard “unintended elbow to the head”.

I don’t think he tried to land an elbow but if your elbow is perpendicular to your shoulder and you’re 6’3-6’4, chances are you’re going to hit somebody close to their head.

A Jeff Fryar reference.  He hit 11 3's against Michigan and Gohlke of Oakland has 8 early in the second half.

If memory serves, the 1990 Michigan team told Steve Fisher they could run with Loyola Marymount.  He let them try.  They lost 149-114.

Ok. Now I’d be officially concerned about Medved. If you’re 6/25 from 3-point range, you have to direct your PG to push or rotate the ball around more than they did in this game.

Their top player, and maybe the best PG in CSU history, Stevens had a dreadful game against UVA and followed it up with an equally shit game tonight. UT played pretty tough defense but he looks closer to a freshman than graduate senior in the biggest games. Couldn’t have it.

Nothing against UT but a baseline CSU team that doesn’t turn the ball over 18 fucking times probably makes this a game.

Since I’m watching Oakland and I don’t know that much about them, I looked them up on Wikipedia. I’ll put their top 3 alumni up against anyone else:

Booger, from Revenge of the Nerds

Freddy Krueger

The Hoff

How can you match that? I’m looking for one more to fill out Mount Rushmore, but it’s slim pickings after those 3.

Yeah I’m a pass on Medved.  That first half was horrendous.  11 points??

This Kampe guy has his team playing pretty well.  We should look at him.  (Yes that’s sarcasm if you were wondering).

Also for those saying they wouldn’t take Medved because he builds his team mostly through diamond-in-the-rough transfers or portal players, what do you think the next UM coach is going to have to do?

For those saying they wouldn’t take him because he couldn’t bring anybody worth a shit with him, I’m willing to take a flyer or two on players who are well coached and show grit than what Juwan served up this past year.

If you give Medved the resources at Michigan, I’d have faith he could eventually build a good team that’s cohesive and dynamic.

Note: I know I criticized him a bit earlier in the thread but that doesn’t mean he’s a horrible candidate or deserves an instant pass.

At this point, until Michigan gets its shit together with NIL and makes it a little easier to get in key transfers, they need someone who can coach above his weight. Unless they are gonna pony up a lot of dough, they really can’t be super picky. The trajectory of the program now as opposed to 5 years ago is remarkably different.

Possibly but there’s not a clear candidate imo and that’s the issue. I’m not even sure UM has the top vacant HC position right now so they may have to resort to best coach available.

Medved isn’t the only creative college basketball coach in the country but his players play hard, create quality offensive possessions typically (outside of tonight and few times this season) and play defense.

Again, there’s other good coaches who do this too, but the track record is there and a back to basics approach should be welcomed with open arms.

Sorry but just in the Elite 8 is closer to hyperbole than reality. I’m not trying to get into a whole thing here and the job is still sought after but the shine is off. That was 3 years ago and we live in a “what have you done for me lately” society.

I also never said the job is Northwestern-level but it might not be a top destination at the moment.

And another thing; I’m not convinced if Love or Shannon Jr. we’re on the Michigan roster, the team would be in a better position.

can we buy the entire oakland U team? They are much better coached than us.

Oh wait none of their credits would transfer never mind.   Our players are all Rhodes Scholars.  Just ask admissions.
