Julian Fleming to OSU

Consensus #1 WR and composite #6 player in the country selects Ohio State over (relatively) hometown Penn State and Clemson. Know Michigan has been out of it for a while but was hoping he’d pick PSU or Clemson.

Yes yes don’t care what does it have to do with us rabble rabble rabble

He's good, good get for them, don't really care because their recruiting dominance is over. They'll get good players but they're not going to get top 3 classes year after year anymore

Agree, they had a very small class last year, that's why we were ranked higher, they still brought in more elite recruits last year than we did.  And this year they have 2 5 stars and 3 other top 80 players while we have 1 top 100 player.

Long way to go, but Ohio State is going to probably produce a top 5 class where as we'll be around 10.

It's true that OSU recruited a 17-man 2019 class with high star density. Even still, if you take Michigan's top 17 signees from its 26-man class, they rank more highly (in aggregate) than OSU's top 17. Michigan had the best class in the Big Ten by perhaps all metrics, including raw scores and density scores.

Oh they'll recruit at an elite level still. But the days of them recruiting with Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are probably gone. They'll recruit in the 5-15 range. But they lost one of the five best coaches ever, so it's gonna be a step back

Let's not forget that Urban is still an Assistant AD at OSU. My read of that role is he can stay around as long as he likes and it's mainly about keeping him plugged into the recruiting process, especially when kids are on campus. Like most people I assume Urban will bore of this after a year or two and take a coaching job elsewhere. However, in the meantime I expect him to be actively involved in recruiting kids to OSU and we all know how good he is at that.

What I'm wondering is what happens if Day loses a couple games, you think Cbus will implode at that point?  I can see them losing maybe three games this year, if that happens shit will hit the fan.  A lot of my Buckeye friends went ape shit when they lost one game, imagine if they lose three, it would be a sight to behold.

Who exactly are they losing to in your opinion? I don’t see three threatening games on their schedules. The only two “tough” games for them on the road are Indiana and Michigan. They have it setup to be undefeated coming into AA yet again...

that said, hope you’re right

Exactly. Tressel, yes, recruited primarily Ohio and very well. He had an outstanding relationship with Ohio HS coaches, Cooper, on the other hand, was not that tight with Ohio HS coaches and being from Tennessee probably didn't help.  If one goes back and really looks at the Cooper classes, many of his star players came from all across the U.S.  He was more of a national recruiter and put together several top 2 to 5 classes.  With that said, I sure miss the Cooper days.

Because I know of several prospects that have faded away from them in the wake of the Urban Meyer stuff. I don't think they'll have a "significant drop" just a notable one. I think they'll probably finish in between 5-10 in the recruiting rankings now, and are no longer one of the 3 best recruiting schools in the nation. There's a genuine and legit cloud over them, and that's why Day has focused on Ohio/Midwest kids a bit more than Urban. Didn't mean to come off with the Michigan arrogance of them being done.

You answered yourself, “Urban is gone”. Don’t  think Ryan Day is going to pull in classes like Urban Meyer as Urbans classes were 2nd only to Saban. He didn’t say they wouldn’t recruit great, of course they will but Urban Meyer was a machine and it’s great he is gone.

I should probably change that statement, I don't think they'll recruit poorly at all. They'll always recruit very well. But they're going to clean up Ohio, and get a few studs out of other states, but their days of pulling five stars consistently from Texas, California, Florida, and Georgia are numbered. I didnt mean to imply they were done, but they're no longer on Georgia/Alabama/Clemson level, and now on Texas/LSU/Oklahoma levels.

I think if Brian were to do one of those Welcome posts where he guages (among other things) how much confidence to have in his projections, Fleming would get a less confident judgment than you might expect.  He plays for a small school, against other small schools, and just flat out-athletes everyone he's matched against, by a big margin.

Of course, the people that evaluate players aren't stupid, they try to adjust for this, they look at camp performance, etc.  So I'm in no way saying that Fleming doesn't deserve his ranking, and I'm in no way predicting that he won't live up to it.  But I will say that I think there's more uncertainty about him than there is for a normal 5*, because we haven't seen him in live-game conditions when he's matched up against college-level talent.

Finally, I think Ohio State's class this year is going to be more "fragile" than it normally is.  Let's say they stink it up this year: Fields gets injured and they're playing a 3* QB with very little practice and no real experience in the system, their defensive coaching changes don't pay immediate dividends and they're still giving up way too many points, etc.  The go 8-4 and look bad doing it.  I think that will have a much bigger impact than it normally would, because it's not just Day's first year at OSU, it's his first year as a HC ever.  I would actually predict Fleming would wind up at Clemson or PSU if that happened.  (Well, Clemson anyway; the PSU faithful may treat Fleming so poorly, both in person and on social media, that he winds up not wanting anything to do with them.)

OSU is a top national program. People should expect relatively local elite kids to go here.

Piss

Also if we can't beat them this year at home with a new coach we might as well just end any hope of ever beating them, because if we can't ever turn the tide who is gonna want to come here vs going there?

Wonder if OSU fans felt this way during the Cooper years...

Harbs needs to step on it, no more of this pussy footing around. He either grabs them by the balls this year, or he needs to be let go!

Probably, but the thing with Cooper was it was one coach that just didn't get it. Remember, Cooper was considered an outsider like Rich Rod was. Our last 3 coaches are now 1-11 against them and Lloyd lost the last 4, and all but one of those guys have Michigan ties. It's getting ridiculous at this point...especially to come out looking like they did last year with nothing new for the game and no adjustments to be had.

I think Hoke....I mean Harbaugh has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

It's notable.  That moved OSU ahead of PSU of in the conference recruiting rankings.  Obviously choosing PSU would have kept them atop the conference rankings.  UM is #3 FWIW.  We still have a number of good players out there on the board and a good shot at a number of them.  And, it's still a long way from signing day.  But, this is OSU's 2nd 5-star of the class so that's never good.  Their average star rating (.93ish) is significantly higher than UM's (.89ish).
