Dusty May to Michigan
I talked to Dusty the other day and got the feeling that he was headed here. Louisville guys were acting like they had him wrapped up, but it definitely seemed like he was headed this way. Excited for him and Michigan.
Definitely less pressure here than at Louisville, too.

Literally no where to go but up! Lol.
I was hoping for devries, but, hopefully this works out.
Well now it's definitely official.

Dusty A. May, Newheadcoach
Hope he pans out. Only 47 years old, he could be here awhile
As someone who has criticized Warde ... I tip my cap. This is bigtime.
Same. He clearly got his top guy. Now need to get with the times with NIL.

I am a huge Warde critic but this is a solid hire. It’s not easy to make the Final Four. Making the Final Four at Florida Atlantic means you’re going to be snatched up by a good program soon. Might as well have been us.
This could be why their exit looked lackluster.
Ok Dusty, time to roll up your sleeves.
He has never had a losing season in six years as a head coach. He built a program at FAU into a Final Four school. This on the surface seems like an excellent hire.
They made the final 4 because Purdue shit the bed in epic fashion. Followed it up with the same team losing to teams like Bryant, Temple, and looking like shit against Northwestern in the first round.
Look at what FAU did before May and look at what they did during May’s entire. It’s night and day.

I mean they also beat a 4 seed that blew out Duke and a 3 that beat sparty (though obviously not top ten versions of those teams) and came within a point of the title game. I take the one hit wonder point, but let's not act like Purdue losing gave them a bye to the final four. They played exactly one double digit seed
March 23rd, 2024 at 10:02 PM ^
No, they made the final four because they beat Memphis, FDU, 4 seed Tennessee and 3 seed K-State and then lost by 1 to the National Runners-up.
Then they moved up to a tougher conference, finished 2nd in it, won 25 games and beat Texas A&M and Arizona.

A win vs Purdue doesnt put you in the final four. Why do people do this on this board? I swear if they need to they could dismiss Tom Brady's success. He may not be a a hall of fame coach (yet) but the guy took FAU to the Final Four. He is ours and that is a fantastic thing to have on his resume when recruiting. We can bitch in 36 months if he isnt working out but he has a 3 year ramp up from me. Build it up right!

Brady couldn't beat out Griese, had mediocre measurements at the combine, and was an glorified NFL system QB
Tom Brady couldn't beat my beloved but ratass NY Giants in two different Super Bowls. Not impressed with that dude.*
*Absolutely being sarcastic here.

That guy is a bum. Couldn't even beat out Henson.
I love you guys!

Northwestern beat Purdue and took them to OT the second time. They also beat Illinois, a 3 seed. They aren't a push over.
FAU also beat Arizona, Texas A&M, and gave Illinois a good game when Illinois looked like world beaters early in the season.

It doesn't matter how a team makes the Final Four. If you make it, you did a lot to get there. Trying to portray a Final Four run as not legitimate says a lot about you.
I was hoping Warde had a bigger ace up his sleeve, but this was the hottest name on the market - and I like him better than Medved

We just hired a coach with Final Four experience. That doesn't happen all the time.
dusty bottoms in the new coach. espn has a typo....

are you, el guapo?
we need a plethora of wins next year

he's infamous, which means he's more than famous
Each of us has our own El Guapo, XM.
Is that a male plane?
Welcome Dusty!
please call John Belien first.
March 23rd, 2024 at 10:05 PM ^
Beilein probably wants nothing to do with college basketball in any capacity at this point.
Now Yaklich would be a fun hire.
March 23rd, 2024 at 10:22 PM ^
About what?
Are they friends? Is JB his mentor? Has Beilein taken on an unofficial Michigan basketball advisor role we’re all unaware of? I’m sure he’d be great as an assistant of some kind but give the new HC a minute to get his bearings under him, yeesh…
Much like when Harbaugh left the football program and Moore took over, it’s nobody’s team except for the HC, his staff and his players. We all love Beilein but if May’s first directive is “Contact the coach from 5 years ago for help”, what does that say about the level of confidence of the guy you just hired?
March 23rd, 2024 at 10:48 PM ^
You could do a hell of a lot worse than getting advice from John beilein. Even if it's just where to live and who has the best Chinese delivery.
March 23rd, 2024 at 11:05 PM ^
We all know Beilein doesn’t eat Chinese. He prefers subs and they must be crazy!
And I’m fine with May chatting up Beilein if he wants to but it shouldn’t have to be a pre-requisite. The

Beilein was part of the selection committee. Maybe he voted NAY. but doubtful.
Great mentor to navigate the A2 politics.
March 23rd, 2024 at 11:42 PM ^
Hiring May reeks of Beilein' approval. The guy is practically a 47 year old version of Beilein, yet he's had more success at age 47 than Beilein had at age 47.

I know what you're getting at, but Moore isn't a good example. Harbaugh is his mentor, and he's said several times that they talk often, and that he'll lean on him as he transitions to being a head coach.
But I agree that May and Beilein probably have no previous connection, and there's no reason to assume May would reach out to him. He could reach out to his former boss (and former IU / Detroit-Mercy coach) Mike Davis. I don't know why he would, but he's recently unemployed.
Good grab by Warde. No clue if it’ll work but its a solid hire today. We’ll see if his success at FAU is some short term roster luck or if hes legit
Well, they decided they wanted him and they appear to have gotten him. Like others, I’m not super-impressed with what was available, fine with this as the choice given all that, and pleased to see that Warde stepped up and was decisive in a time when he needed to be. I’ve often pushed back against a lot of the criticism against him but he *does* seem best suited for behind-the-scenes bureaucracy and hasn’t always been quick on the trigger when needed, so this is good.
We’ll see if it works out.
Good Iuck Coach May.
March 23rd, 2024 at 11:27 PM ^
This is one of the “only time will tell” hires. Relatively young at 47 and some strong positives in his background, but questions.
These are the hires that go the way of Roy to KU or Mike to Duke for long runs by building excellent programs or it goes the way of so many mediocre hires. I’m hopeful of the former.
Welcome coach May
Did Warde move fast enough?
I hope it works and isn't just AD grabbing the hot coach. RR was also a hot coach with a good record at one school in a weak conference. I believe the cupboard is even emptier than what RR inherited as well.
