Below is what I compiled looking at the rosters at pro-football-reference.com. Not sure if all of these players were actually on the roster when the Super Bowl was played, however. Based on this, Michigan had players on rosters for 50 of the 56 Super Bowls, and a least one Super Bowl champion for 39 of the Super Bowls (with one yet to be determined).

It's interesting that starting around 2002 the lists seem to grow longer. I realize some of that is random, and the result of the frequent appearances of Tom Brady, but to me it also suggests that beginning with Moeller and continuing with Carr we started at a higher (or at least more NFL friendly) level.
My other thought is that if you look at the first 8-10 years you see as many Bump guys and Bo guys. Bump may not have been an elite coach (or may just have been unlucky to face to Woody at his peak) but he could recruit.
January 31st, 2023 at 10:17 PM ^
People ask why Bo always lost all of those Rose Bowls. This list is one of the big reasons why. The NFL was not exactly overflowing with Michigan players. Michigan did not produce (nor recruit) a lot of NFL-level guys. Michigan was always fundamentally sound, but it was not at the talent level of teams like USC, especially at the skill positions.

I’d prefer to not count Frank Clark.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:03 AM ^
I was surprised that he included "University of Michigan" as his school in the pre-recorded introduction before last week's game.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:12 AM ^
He doesn't have a problem with Michigan. The problem is people who would prefer the university not be associated with that piece of shit
January 30th, 2023 at 11:03 AM ^
Hard not to "count" him as he did play for Michigan and is now going to be playing in his 3rd Super Bowl.
However, you can certainly make an argument not to "congratulate" him.

Yeah that is one individual whose Wolverine credentials should not be a source of pride for us.

I don't follow the NFL closely (other than occasionally checking in on the Lions) so had forgotten that he was still in the league. And I'm not disagreeing with you for reminding us of his act of domestic violence, which I know in the past was something that wasn't taken as seriously by the legal system or society as it needs to be (and probably still isn't in many places). That said -- and having no idea what kind of life Clark has lived since he left Ann Arbor -- I think that someone shouldn't necessarily be defined by their worst actions as a 20 year old. If that's sounds like I'm diminishing what he did that's not my intent.

As a Bengals fan, I am sad cause we should be cheering for Dax Hill and Chris Evans to get their rings, but alas.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
They played this season and are still with the Bengals, so wouldn't they get a ring anyway?
January 30th, 2023 at 11:14 AM ^
The Bengals lost and thus do not have the opportunity to get a ring.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
unless you're Staee. They find was to congratulate themselves for not winning titles

D'OH!!! I deserve the negs!!!
I watched both games last night, and completely lost sight of that forest from the tree directly in front of me!
LOL! Neg it some more!!!!

What, like a conference championship game participation ring?
January 30th, 2023 at 11:21 AM ^
Was rooting for the Bengals and while the refs were not the only reason they lost, they were... not great if you're a Cincy fan.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:31 AM ^
The refs fucked over the Bengals. A perfect example was the bogus intentional grounding flag on Burrows in the crucial Bengal drive. He had a RB crossing in the vicinity of where the ball was thrown and was being roughed up when he threw it. On KC's next drive, Mahomes did almost exactly the same thing, except the 'receiver' was even further away and there was no flag.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
I don't remember Mahomes doing it, but that was a clear grounding by Burrow. I really didn't care who won, but as soon as it happened I thought it should have been grounding
January 30th, 2023 at 12:02 PM ^
That is the play you use an example? That was clear grounding by Burrow. His receivers had released downfield and he threw it at his lineman's feet behind the line of scrimmage. Mahomes threw it to no-one but it was at least towards an eligible receiver.
Of all the bad calls this one isn't on the list.
January 30th, 2023 at 12:11 PM ^
Yeah. He wasn't outside the tackle box and the ball didn't make it passed the line of scrimmage.
January 30th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
The running back (Perrine?) was behind the lineman and clearly targeted by Burrow. It was a bogus call.
There were at least five different calls (not including the phantom fifth down) that went against the Bengals in the fourth quarter alone. The outcome was definitely unduly influenced.
January 30th, 2023 at 1:18 PM ^
I’d encourage you to watch that play again, because you are very much misremembering where burrow threw that and how close the RB was
January 30th, 2023 at 5:51 PM ^
Yeah, he threw it at the feet of his lineman. That ball wasn't anywhere near a receiver. RB was 5 yards past the linemen.
January 30th, 2023 at 12:58 PM ^
I’m gonna call BS on this particular example. The ball Burrows threw was behind an O-lineman, and the nearest eligible receiver was 5-7 yards downfield past said lineman. Cincinnati also converted the 3rd down on the next play anyway. That call didn’t affect the outcome of that drive in any meaningful way. The ball Mahomes threw, was about 2 yards short of his eligible receiver AND he was hit when he threw it.
I didn’t watch all of the game, but to complain about these two plays to say either were a difference maker in the way the game ended is a stretch.
January 30th, 2023 at 3:16 PM ^
There were a ton of bad calls, the intentional grounding wasn't one of them. It was clear and obvious intentional grounding.
January 30th, 2023 at 3:26 PM ^
That was 100% grounding on Burrow.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:35 AM ^
There are some refs who are bad. There are some refs who look dumb and/or confused when they're out there making calls. And there are some who are both. Ron Torbert is both. And I'm not a fan of either team, nor do I have a NFL team I root for. I just know every time I see him, I see dumb face. O'Neill had this look too and there's a guy who does SEC games who is perpetually confused when making a call.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:17 AM ^
after being kicked off the team, Frank Clark is an ex-Wolverine, not a former Wolverine.
January 30th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
The graphics that the official University Of Michigan social media accounts post that consistently include him would beg to differ.
January 30th, 2023 at 2:41 PM ^
Should be like a "dishonorable discharge" in that he doesn't get any privileges associated with his time in the uniform. Should have to associate with his High School, like others do on pregame intros.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
I want to be Chad Henne!!!
January 30th, 2023 at 11:33 AM ^
Even Todd Collins is envious of Chad's playing time v years of income history.
January 30th, 2023 at 1:06 PM ^
Spotrac says he’s made just over $13 million since 2016. He’s thrown 61 passes during that time, which works out to about $213,000 per attempt. Not bad.
January 30th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
That's way less money than I would have guessed. More than the minimum, but given QB position value I thought even backups would make more than that.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:27 AM ^
If it wasn't for Henne's TD drive, the Chiefs would not be where they are right now.
January 30th, 2023 at 11:32 AM ^
Not only that, but it was Kansas City's longest postseason TD drive ever. 98 yards to a TD from the bench.
Tom Brady = GOAT QB
Chad Henne = GOAT Backup QB
January 30th, 2023 at 11:29 AM ^
Wow Chad Henne is still in the league
January 30th, 2023 at 11:43 AM ^
A credit to his talent but maybe also the fact that he rarely takes the punishment of game action.
January 30th, 2023 at 7:00 PM ^
There's probably some of that, but I think it's mostly that in any given year, he's probably the 30-40th best QB on the planet. Having a floor in backup QBs of "borderline starter" is very valuable, as the 49ers demonstrated all year (and reinforced the point when their 4th stringer went down as well).
January 30th, 2023 at 11:30 AM ^
Congrats to 3 of them
January 30th, 2023 at 11:49 AM ^
Really impressive Henne and Graham are still in the league. Henne's got one of the best jobs in sports which is 'solid backup QB that never has to play because he's behind a great starting QB'. And Graham is still going strong at 34. Not easy to do at a position that requires athleticism. Gotta think he's close to retiring now

Graham has had a great career
