Nua killing it as usual
Nua should of been first staff member let go last year. He has a been a major downgrade from Matty.
Nua was clearly held back by Brown and deserved a chance, especially after bringing in Rooks and flipping Benny. But yeah, hasn’t done too well so far this year.
Johnny don’t fall for the typical Michigab excuse making for where someone else gets blamed for current coaches failures . Our DL has regressed from a technical standpoint under Nua not just recruiting. Matty would of never allowed it even under Brown either. In fact Matty had no issue having great DLs under Brown
When Nua gets out from under Brown, Gattis gets to call his own offense, and our QBs get over their lingering injuries we are going to be a monster!
He could very well be the reason why. I just saw an Alabama insider say it's down to Alabama for Walter Nolen with a possibility of Florida. He didn't even bring up Michigan.
Look how much Greg Mattison got out of a player like Ryan Glasgow, a walk on now in the NFL. And look how the D Line fell off the map last year.
I am really glad Ryan Osborn is coaching the DEs and EDGEs now. He coached Montez Sweat. I wouldn't want to see what happened last year in those positions happen again this year.
It’s almost as if Michigan’s late signing period for 2021 didn’t include two 4 star defensive linemen and a late rising 3 star.
Look I'm no insider but from 247 you can see that Sherrone Moore is either the primary or secondary on every major recruit Nua's gotten for Michigan. One has to wonder how much of his decent success has been having our ace recruiter hold his hand. It sure doesn't look like Nua's even an above average coach in terms of player development, but I guess this is the year we'll really be able to tell on that front.
I already can see. There's better coaches out there. One should have been brought in.
Any reason we couldn't bring in Mike Elston from Notre Dame? Alum, hell of a recruiter, DL coach.
I don't know.
The next DL coach should come from Ohio... need to get back in.
He just got a five star DE from Ohio to commit to ND over OSU. He also poached Tommy Kraemer and Liam Eichenberg from Ohio as well. Basically every big recruiting win for ND over OSU, Elston has been the primary recruiter. It may be time to bring him back to Michigan.
You have no idea if Nua is a good coach or not. None.
Gotta love the poster who says things definitively about something they can't possibly know.
I am willing to wait and see how the interior DLine looks this year. How much of last season was Brown's philosophy vs Nua inability? We don't know.
I do know a new coordinator with NFL pedigree came in and chose to keep him around. I feel confident saying Nua wasn't forced on MacDonald. He could have gone in another direction had he thought it best. So clearly Nua has something going for him in the eyes of professionals and not internet guy.
You have no idea if Nua is a good coach or not. None.
Why don't you have an idea by now?
Yeah have to agree here, it is starting to look glaringly bad for Nua. The best recruiters on this staff don't have heavy lean prospects just up and commit to a non-Alabama/OSU/Clemson type program. There's been recruiting gaffes and mediocrity along the defensive line multiple times since he's been here, I've also never heard a player say they "really connect" with Nua with the exception of the kid who's brother played for him at ASU and subsequently went elsewhere.
It's starting to look like maybe Nua isn't going to be able to hack it under this new heavy recruiting focused approach of the staff.
Might be true.
Crootin' is a crapshoot. No reason to get your panties in a wad over it. Continue recruiting and move to the next one on your board.
GO BLUE!!!
Yeah why get upset losing a kid with Georgia, Florida and Miami offers at the biggest position of need who was 100% predicted to go to Michigan all good brother yeah Go Blue!
I guess they still have plenty of McDonald's Happy Meals!!!
Is it really the biggest position of need? Didn’t we sign 4 interior d-linemen last year? Not saying we don’t need to add a few more, but it is only July. Way to early to get upset about losing a single 3 star.
Benny and Rooks are 3Tech/Strongside DEs that would be playing out of position at NT, Iwunnah is a project nobody knows how that story ends. Unless Giudice and Guy really beef up they will also be Strongside DEs. Bennett is a standup DE in a 3-4.
Mazi Smith is the last NT that Michigan signed and that was two years ago.
In the last 3 years Ohio State has rushed for 264-171-226 against Michigan due to a severe lack of any presence of an interior defensive line. I would say yes, that is probably the biggest position of need and Michigan has not been successful at recruiting or developing the glaring weakness of their team since the 2016 DL and Mo Hurst left.
Devonte Miles committed in January -- Seth wrote about how he was a "nose tackle-flavored nose tackle who projects to nose tackle" when he committed in January ". Plus isn't 340 lb FL Deone Walker projected to commit to UM? I share everybody's skepticism about Walter Nolen signing with UM
People would have bitched about the two stars he didn't have anyway.
and the rest would have complained about our terrible record with five stars
I know we're supposed to be outraged whenever a 3* commits, but are we also supposed be outraged if a 3* doesn't commit?
Is it like Schrodinger's outrage?
Full marks!
Deone to the moon???
I hope so. But who will coach him to there?
Fergodsakes, can't we counter with a bigger NIL bag? We should not be losing recruiting battles anymore to anyone not named Saban.
We should not be losing recruiting battles anymore to anyone not named Saban.
or Day, Swinney, Kelly, Riley, Smart, Christobal, Orgeron, sometimes Christ, sometimes Franklin, maybe Helton, maybe Sarkisian.
NIL leveling the playing field is an illusion. All the same schools that are more aggressive under the prior rules are going to be more aggressive under NIL. Michigan will be conservative and stay directly within the margins of the rules while many other schools will exploit every nuance and grey area possible, or just flat out break the rules. So, basically not much will change as far as Michigan's ability to attract recruits. Get used to it.
It definitely won't drastically alter the state of recruiting, but teams that have by-and-large tried to follow NCAA rules now have a valid mechanism to compensate their players.
I do think you're right, the big under-the-table spenders are going to continue to spend, and continue to try and find ways to cheat. And they'll continue to sign elite prospects.
But Michigan has the largest alumni base in the country with a lot of disposable income. It has a globally recognized brand and influential connections all over the place. There aren't a lot of programs out there that would want to get into a bidding war with Michigan, and I do think that will count for something.
I don't think Michigan is going to get into bidding wars. It's a cultural thing. Michigan will hold its nose and play along with NIL, but by no means do I think the university will be a market leader in this new era. I agree with you about the alumni base but it needs to be rallied by the school to be as effective as possible and that's just not going to happen. So even though OSU alums have fewer resources in the aggregate I'm pretty sure they will be more focused on directing those dollars to five star football players in a way that Michigan will not match.
I could definitely see the shot callers at Michigan thinking they are above bidding wars for prospect commitments. "We're Michigan, we're so special that we can offer you something even better than money and indorsements.. The Michigan experience"..
The reality though, of course, is that they're not; no one is.
I'm holding out some glimmer of hope that they'll start to understand not everyone is as enamored with Michigan as they assume they are, but that's only because we don't know yet how Michigan is going to utilize NIL. It would be typical of Michigan to continue playing nickel slots with a wheel barrel full of nickels when the high stakes tables just opened at the casino.
This is not about the shot callers at Michigan, it's about the shot callers in some businesses who spend money for athletes to advertise. Give it a few years, when people see what kind of deals a star at Michigan brings in, it will level the playing field. Denard would have been a millionaire here.
I hope the field does level out. But there is a lot of football money in Texas. Football is BIG there.
The Michigan Indifference!
Is Michigan going to take the high ground with NIL rules, while other big schools just leave it as the wild west? If they do go take some mythical high ground it will hurt the product on the field.
How could Michigan have the largest alumni base in the country?
That last sentence has been on repeat for several years. Yeah, yeah...but now they're really focusing on recruiting
You guys it’s cuz Walter Nolen is a silent commit already…right?
I haven't seen, yet, why he turned so cold to Michigan so quickly.
Anyone know?
Oh man. That is definitely a major bummer, because his film is impressive. I feel for Sam Webb* though, he's been saying for months Michigan is way out ahead in his recruitment and then out of nowhere a middling program (with some deep pockets, mind you) comes in and snags him.
I have no doubt this recruitment is far from over, but that's a pretty tough break for Michigan. Might be time to start warming up that NIL money cannon.
*I'm sure the "Sam Webb doesn't know shit" crowd will chirp a little bit below this comment, so I'll just say it now. Sam Webb knows his stuff, and he does have good, credible sources. This is probably one of those situations where UT offered a deal$ that Jordan and his family felt like they had to jump on. I would bet the staff and people around the program are just as surprised by this commitment as we are.
I'm wondering if NIL being enacted had anything to do with him choosing Tennessee on this day?
I don't know. And maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with it.
But it looks to me like the highest NIL bidders are going to be winning some recruiting battles. NIL, a new, powerful factor in recruiting wars.
It does seem like too much of a coincidence that Phillips drops a surprise commitment the same day it gets announced the NIL law is basically not going to be regulated by the NCAA.
Honestly, we should just have a booster cut the family a check at this point. It seems like the NCAA is basically saying "we're not going to police payments to players anymore, have at it" with the news that they're allowing each state to write their own laws.
Obviously don't put a video of Harbaugh arriving at the Phillips' household with a big bag of cash on social media, but if they really want the kid just cut a bigger check and get him back in the fold.
If big money is going to be spent, then put it toward Walter Nolen. But Alabama probably has deeper pockets. And they will probably be forced to use them deeper than they think, since big money is going to explode immediately onto the scene. Who's the highest bidder for Walter Nolen?
To me, this is actually sad. There was always money behind the scenes in college football. (For those who don't think so they just have to watch the documentary "The Best That Never Was" and how Marcus Dupree's mom got a trailer house backed onto her property the next day after she told Oklahoma that's what she wanted to get her son to commit there.) But now we're just going to watch as money influences the player right before our very eyes. Will Michigan boosters open the purse?
Yeah, it is kind of sad and ridiculous that there will be college players that will take home a bigger paycheck than some NFL players. I think Michigan absolutely can, and sometimes will open up the bag. I also think they will maintain a certain level of morals and integrity that other programs simply won't. Shit can get really weird on the recruiting trail and I don't think Michigan will get down in the mud with some of the other programs *cough, UT, cough* to win a recruitment
Trust the coaches, they always have a back up plan in their recruiting strategies. In this case the plan is some Covid excuse unranked kid with all the FCS and most of the MAC offers.
