Harbaugh would never endanger Al Glick [Marc-Gregor Campredon]

Unverified Voracity Wishes The Announcements Were More Spread Out Comment Count

Hey folks! Got some content on deck. Probably. Kobe Bufkin and Xavier Worthy are committing this afternoon within minutes of each other so we're either going to be pretty happy to step on one of our posts or consigning another writeup to the Bin Of Wasted Effort. Patience today.

Today in how to go viral and lose everyone's trust. Not even the Jim Harbaugh contretemps* have the same gusto these days. Here's the thing he said in a press conference:

“Yeah, my thoughts would be, it’s a different conversation if there’s no students on campus. If students are on campus, then my personal belief as a parent of a daughter who would also be on campus that this is a safe place. As safe as possible, would be within the University, in our athletic buildings and complexes. That safety precautions that have been put into place.

“I would feel good with the medical oversight of the students, student athletes. I would want the responsibility. I would want the responsibility of keeping our players safe and also educating them. I would not want to come off of that guard tower of educating and keeping our players safe.

“Now, if it comes to a point in time where you say that we can’t play, it’s obvious, it’s clear, then everybody would be reasonable and know that was the right thing to do. COVID is part of our society. Wasn’t caused by football or caused by sports. And there’s no expert view right now that I’m aware of that sports is going to make that worse. It’s part of our society, we’re going to have to deal with it.

“These kids are going to have to do the same thing. They’ve got to go to school. They’ve trained their whole lives for the opportunity to play their sport. That is my view with the knowledge that we have and time to learn more about it. It would be my responsibility, our responsibility and the players’ responsibility also, to keep themselves safe and get the schooling and training that they need.”

Here's the thing that got retweeted thousands of times:

It's hard to regard the above as anything but malice when literally the previous sentence is "if it comes to a point in time where we can't play, it's obvious, it's clear, then everyone would be reasonable and know that was the right thing to do." Harbaugh is saying that he doesn't think it's a given that playing sports is unethical but he's perfectly willing to defer to the experts; the cut-off quote makes it sound like he's saying the opposite.

[After THE JUMP: Tschetter's full… of quality stories!]

Tschetter follow-up items. Brendan Quinn gets background on Will Tschetter, just your average small-town farm kid who lived in China for a couple years, plays quarterback at 6'8", and once got an A-:

At this point you’re realizing Tschetter is indeed a little different and, well, goodness, what else could there be? Oh, he’s carrying a 3.999 GPA because a Spanish teacher once refused to budge from an A- mark. (He’s still PRETTY HOT about it.)

Tschetter also may have had one of those phone calls where you hang up and then stare speechlessly at the phone for a bit:

Juwan Howard tried calling one day. Will was outside working, but pulled his phone out.

“Sorry, Coach, I’m out in the field clearing rocks right now,” he answered. “Can I call you back later?”

Tschetter does not have social media, so he does not know about the letter in Harper's. Blessed young man. I need someone to Eternal Sunshine the entire take industry that's sprung up around it right out of my brain.

The local paper also has a good profile in the aftermath of his commitment:

Kasey Morlock knows how to put her sons to work. The family farm will have calves to take care of, a garden to tend and a whole bunch of hay to bale. There’s a never-ending list of things to do on a farm.

“I was talking to my dad this morning, and we just got a lot of hay in,” Morlock said. “He goes, ‘Oh, can Will drive the truck so we can pick it up?’ Yes, he can! Because he’s so much more free now! Maybe, he made a mistake of not waiting until the end of the summer.”

Also in Tschetter, we've got a denominator for his free throw percentage. It's large:

Girtman noted Tschetter is an efficient scorer at all three levels and has been one of Stewartville’s top shooters the past three years. Last season, he shot 60% from the field and 45% from 3-point range (67-for-149). He also went 84% from the free-throw line with 258 makes on 308 attempts, with the latter two marks ranking the fifth- and eight-highest single-season totals in state history.

That's more FTAs than Zavier Simpson, Jon Teske, or MAAR—Michigan's three most recent four-year contributors—had in their careers. That is an extremely robust FT% number. The 3P% numbers are based on 149 attempts, which is solid but not quite as definitive.

Also also, Orion Sang collects some information on how Michigan went about acquiring Tschetter:

The Wolverines won Tschetter over in a little more than a month thanks to a dogged pursuit that began the day they extended their offer. He took a one-on-one Zoom call with coach Juwan Howard and a virtual tour of campus with Howard and all three assistant coaches (which, according to Vang, no other program did).

"Just very, very detailed as compared to some programs that would call and offer and that’s it — no virtual tour, no follow-up, no four-person Zoom with all the staff," Vang said. "It was really impressive, just in comparison with some of the other schools that recruited him.”

This whole thing, from the recruit to the acquisition, is like Beilein never left.

Throw it to Nico. Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy:

Nico Collins had 60 targets last year. Tarik Black, Donovan-Peoples Jones, Nick Eubanks, and Sean McKeon had 168 between them. Collins averaged 12 yards per target. Those guys topped out at 8. Throw it to Nico.

The things you don't have to do when you've got OSU talent. The Post Corner breaks down Ohio State's defense, which is extremely simple:

Single High, But As A Lifestyle

The first thing you notice in watching through OSU film in 2019, is that the down, distance, and game situation has almost zero bearing on how the Buckeyes line up to play defense. When huddles break and cadences begin, Quarterbacks and Offensive Coordinators will be looking at the same picture:

Screenshot 2020-07-03 at 5.04.03 PM

There will be an overhang [OLB/Safety] outside of the box on either side, pressed corners, 4 down linemen and a safety standing between the goalposts.

Many teams like to disguise the shell and rotation of the safeties, just to plant a small seed of doubt. It is rare for teams that play with a single high safety present it to you directly. Ohio State wants you to know, they play Cover 1 and Cover 3. …

While it may lack imagination, it is clear that the objective is to deny the run at all costs, play aggressively against quick passes underneath, and dare offenses to withstand the pass rush in order to take deep shots on the outside. Not every team can roll this out and expect to be as dominant defensively as OSU was in 2019, but these are the foundational pieces of every defense, and when you’re better than your competition, it often serves to design your scheme as such.

Must be nice to be a roll-out-the-ball defensive coordinator.

Tadpole time. The Daily is a quality publication but sometimes it forcibly reminds you it is written by The Youngs. Shot:

Piada Italian Street Food has joined the growing list of Ann Arbor businesses that have permanently closed their doors amid the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the epicenter of downtown Ann Arbor, the Italian restaurant had become a pillar of the town’s culinary scene. Now, with the beloved restaurant departing, another storefront will again sit empty.

Chaser:

The fast-casual food chain opened the Ann Arbor location in 2016 after the Five Guys that had previously occupied the space on South State Street closed down.

The process of becoming a writer is looking back at the things you wrote earlier in your life and wincing, so I've got great news for this guy.

Etc.: Prospects for an on-time start declining nationwide.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your joke.  I just get the impression that most people (especially myself) don't know what they are talking about when they bring up the level of competition.

My biggest blunders were Steve McNair won't make it in the league and Ryan Leaf is going to have a great career.  (I have since made friend from WSU and they guffaw when I bring that up.)

Am I the only one who had a Max Bielfeldt flashback reading this?

The oddest part of the Harbaugh quote thing was Ethan Sears writing an entire article about the propensity of certain journalists having done this with Harbaugh since he was hired, but then going out of his way to praise Austin for his work.

I guess when you're a student journalist you can't be too truthful because you never know who's going to be interviewing you for a job in a few years.

Oh for sure.  Total BS to be like oh wait, people are reading that?  I thought it wouldn't get noticed so I didn't bother to clarify the context in the first place.

Point is, this isn't some plot/agenda against JH personally.  Wouldn't matter who it was, they'd cherry pick whatever quote would get the most outrage because that's what people click on and share.

They do pay more attention to JH because they know he has gravity with readers (and for that, he's very good for them).

Oh, he’s carrying a 3.999 GPA because a Spanish teacher once refused to budge from an A- mark. (He’s still PRETTY HOT about it.)

I'd really like to know if he's mad at the teacher or himself.

Must be nice to be a roll-out-the-ball defensive coordinator.

From what I've seen, this has always been Greg Mattison's MO.  Ohio State is his dream job.

It's hard to argue against.  If you've got 5-star athletes everywhere, why get complicated?  The whole point of winning with cheat codes is to cheese the game.  He's probably overpaid, though.

TrueBlue2003

Mattison's value is more in recruiting, always was.  I'd say he's worth it in that regard alone.

Also, Ohio State's defense wasn't that good in 2018 before he arrived, despite all the talent.  Remember the Purdue game? The Maryland game?  They dramatically underperformed.

Then pretty much crushed everyone in 2019.  May not have been the scheme but someone got the to play hard and focus like they didn't the year before.

I have nothing to add but I love the above dialogue but I am always looking for the ultimate truth on Mattison.  The press is usually favorable.  I kind of like the guy but others have a different opinion.

I find it interesting that Bo kicked off his Michigan career with an OC and a DC that become head coaches and either won or coached for a national championship somewhere else.  That is a strong staff.

If you can pull of the Eternal Sunshine I'll applaud you.

In lieu of that, Would Will Tschetter Care? seems like a good filter for ignoring petite bourgeoisie squabbles and ivory tower intrigue w/r/t the genre of The Discourse I think you're talking about.

Re: Piada obituary, I remember being on campus in the late 90s when the Caribou Coffee that used to be in the space occupied by M-Den now(?) closed due to competition from the Starbucks that opened on the corner of State & Liberty. The Daily opined the loss of "another local business to a heartless large corporation" and there was a street protest accompanying the article.

Recency bias, like whoa.

Big reason why OSU was able to get away with running Cover 1/3 shell is they had Okudah, Arnette and Wade at CB in which they can lock up in man coverage. It'll be interesting to see how OSU is going to do at CB opposite Wade who is a projected 1st round pick. Since Coombs is back, I would expect to see a more diverse coverage.

The things you don't have to do when you've got OSU talent

I've rewatched a number of OSU games from last year.  One thing I noticed is when OSU plays PSU, Wiscy, etc. those teams don't give up those long pass plays that look like broken coverages to OSU the way UM seems to every year.  There has to be a way to mitigate that.

It's hard to regard the above as anything but malice

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by callous indifference to the truth for the sake of clickbait and retweets.

At least Austin had enough of a conscience to try to take it back.

What's up with branding places as "street food" when they've got little to do with actual street food? I see it all the time now, even everywhere in Poland now, shit is dumb

I didn't even know the FiveGuys was gone.  It opened when I was a freshman.  And now the business that replaced it is also closed.  Sad times.
