Everyone was celebrating with JJ in the game [Patrick Barron]

Michigan 56, Hawaii 10 Comment Count

All eyes were on JJ McCarthy tonight as he led the Michigan Wolverines on the field in his first career NCAA start. Never mind that it came an hour later than anticipated due to lightning in the area, all 100,000+ fans in Michigan Stadium wanted to see what McCarthy could do. The answer they got: against a putrid Hawaii defense, it was spectacular. McCarthy went 11/12 for 229 yards and 3 TDs. He rushed one time for 16 yards and his lone incompletion was a drop by Ronnie Bell. The sophomore QB was poised, he was dead-on accurate, and his physical talents popped up under the evening Big House lights. In the process, McCarthy boosted Michigan to a 42-0 halftime lead and an easy 56-10 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

Michigan's McCarthy-led offense didn't need long to dazzle. On their opening possession, Blake Corum took a hand-off for 24 yards on the first play, and then McCarthy hit Roman Wilson for a 42 strike and a TD. Two plays, 66 yards, seven points. The next drive was nearly all rushing plays with the occasional McCarthy check down, and the 'Bows did nothing to stop the Wolverines or Corum. Drive #3 included the lone McCarthy keeper and was finished off with a fancy 21-yard end-around for Wilson. Less than 11 minutes into the game, it was already 21-0 Wolverines.

The first half would not entirely be that easy, but almost. Michigan did punt on their next offensive possession due to a series of Ronnie Bell errors, a drop followed by a fumble during a catch-and-run third down sequence. Michigan recovered but sent out Brad Robbins to boot it away. The next two drives after that were more McCarthy magic. He uncorked a missile to Bell, then hit Cornelius Johnson on a 54-yard strike, and capped it with a 13-yard laser to Bell for a TD. The drive after that saw a 25-yard rush for Donovan Edwards, a 33-yard pass by McCarthy to Edwards, who was lined up as a WR, and then a 1-yard TD dive by Edwards to put Michigan ahead 35-0.

The Hawaiian showed out against Hawaii [Patrick Barron]

After a Cade McNamara drive that will be discussed in a minute, McCarthy was sent back out for a two-minute drill before halftime. He gave the ball to CJ Stokes twice for a combined 29 yards, then connected with Ronnie Bell for six yards, and then patiently waited in the pocket, rolled to his left, and uncorked another dart to Cornelius Johnson for a sixth Michigan TD. 42-0 at halftime.

As you can guess from that score, Michigan's first team defense did its part in the first half. Hawaii had eight full possessions and gained two first downs. They gained 47 total yards, 14 on 14 rush attempts, and 33 passing yards on 17 attempts. They ran 31 plays for an average of 1.5 yards per play. The Rainbow Warriors did better than previous weeks at protecting the football, but otherwise, they were completely overmatched. The yardage numbers sat at 410 for Michigan and 47 for Hawaii at halftime. When both teams were playing their first-stringers, Michigan was lightyears better, as expected. That's the only story of the game, to be frank.

If there's a second story, it would be about the QBs. McCarthy was indeed as spectacular as the numbers sound. He was strikingly accurate, hitting receivers in stride, right on the numbers. He looked comfortable and the offense's play was electric. The offense felt different with McCarthy in the game. Of course, there are some things I expect the coaches will talk over with him. There were a few moments where Michigan struggled to get lined up with McCarthy in the game, for one. But as a whole, this was the game you wanted to see if you want JJ McCarthy as QB1 this season.

Not what Cade wanted [Patrick Barron]

Unfortunately, it was also a game to forget from Cade McNamara. Though his lone first half series started well, with a quick completion to Ronnie Bell and a long run from Blake Corum, he got little help after that. The first team offensive line's lone wobbly series ensued on several consecutive plays, in addition to a drop from CJ Stokes. After McNamara was sacked for a loss of 10 on 3rd down, Michigan was forced to punt. Grumbling over Cade's performance was heard after that, but it really escalated in the second half.

Michigan got the ball first, ran it once, McNamara dumped it off to Matthew Hibner for five yards, and then Tavierre Dunlap was stuffed on 3rd down. Another punt with Cade in the game. His second chance of the second half didn't go any better. Again he got little help from his OL, as backup G Connor Jones allowed a sack, and McNamara opted to check-down to Colston Loveland rather than throw down the field on 3rd & 13. Another punt. His fourth and final drive was a reversal of that conservative tendency: McNamara was extremely un-McNamara and took a shot down the field, but he massively under-threw it. The pass, intended for Andrel Anthony, was intercepted by Hawaii's Virdel Edwards II. In total, Cade finished 4/6 for 26 yards (4.3 YPA) with no scores and 1 INT.

The struggles of the McNamara offense were exacerbated on the first series after his exit. With third-string QB Davis Warren in, Michigan moved the ball swiftly, with Warren throwing a beautiful ball to TE Max Bredeson, followed by a significant run after the catch. CJ Stokes scored on the next play, and Michigan had another TD. After the Wolverines scored again on the next possession, thanks to a 38-yard TD run from Isaiah Gash, the final numbers were pretty stark: Michigan had 13 real drives in this game and they scored TDs on eight of them. None came with Cade McNamara at QB, and McNamara was on the hook for 4 of 5 drives without a TD.

[Barron]

The second half was entirely played by the second and third team defense, which was pretty clearly not ready for prime-time. Credit to Hawaii, who left their starting QB Joey Yellen in the game, and refused to mail it in despite being run out of the building against Michigan's 1s. Hawaii kept battling and got some quality reps in against Michigan's reserves, who are still learning. The Rainbow Warriors stitched two double-digit play drives together, one ending in a FG and one in a turnover on downs, in addition to a 6-play, 75-yard drive that got them their only TD of the contest.

That came on a 54-yard run from Tylan Hines, thanks to breakdowns at all three levels of Michigan's reserve defense. However, it should be noted that it came only after a Rayshaun Benny drive-ending sack was nullified due to a questionable defensive holding call tacked to Amorion Walker, Michigan's freshman WR who was wearing #1 and playing corner for some reason. The odd nature of that previous sentence tells you all you need to know about the second half defensively for the Wolverines, as it pertains to the rest of the season: nothing.

Michigan was miles better than Hawaii on the whole, and exceptionally so when both teams had their starters in. That was expected, and the giant margin of victory reflected that. Most of the focus coming out of this game will be on the QB battle, and rightfully so. There's little else that can be learned in a game where the two teams should not be on the field with each other. Unfortunately, that will be the case next week as well, when Michigan hosts 1-2 UConn, who was defeated soundly by Syracuse today. That game is slated for noon and will be broadcast on ABC.

There is no content after the jump.

It looked like it was directed at Cade, because when JJ came back on, there was an obnoxiously loud cheer for him, as if the crowd was relieved that Cade wasn't going to play the next series.  The crowd was being assholes about the QB situation. The kid doesn't deserve that at all and we are going to need the 2021 version of Cade at some point this year.

Yeah, on TV you could obviously hear the boos but that could be for any number of reasons (or all of them): the offense playing poorly, the sacks, late game drunk antics, etc.  There was a somewhat audible JJ chant while Cade was in but put 100k in the stands and you'll bound to get some wackos and assholes.

I do think this fanbase has been clamoring for JJ to take the lead since he arrived on campus so I'm glad he earned the spot finally.  But it has been incredibly disheartening to see so many feel the need to denigrate McNamara and his performance as QB at UM to "justify" the change.

At this point it seems like the idea of our two qbs being even out of fall camp was just being respectful to Cade because I have no clue how this was anywhere close to even. These first two games the 3rd string QB has managed to come in and operate the passing offense more smoothly than Cade

Wow. There, surely, are multiple sides to this story but it is people like you, and there are many in your camp who, simply, either do not know or simply refuse to give up these deeply entrenched narratives-and add to your personal little bonfire. Understand that this is really the first opportunity JJ has been given...he is 19 years old-he was a star.

I think that JJ is going to be challenged, even strongly, to see this team to an undefeated season. But for those who know, the greater challenge is with the opponents who are going to have to figure out how to corral this young man-and how he catalyzes the talent around him. It will be interesting to see, going forward, how the play of the entire team changes-not just offensively but both defensively and special teams-and the coaches for that matter.

So all the camp reporters were collectively in on the charade as well?  By all accounts these two guys were neck-and-neck coming out of camp.  Now their two performances since then have been substantially different but trying to read too much palace intrigue into "one guy played about as well as possible against scrubs" vs. "one guy played far worse than his historical play" isn't going to lead you anywhere useful.

Late to this, but completely agree. Harbaugh said in his presser that JJ came on really strong in the last 2.5 weeks, which also roughly squares with the camp noise that Cade had the edge but that JJ had a really impressive practice/scrimmage around then. Making a leap in recent weeks makes sense, and it absolutely does fit with the theory that he’s catching up from spring. And it shows on the field.

Cade should (and likely will) be given plenty of opportunities to win back the starting role - his performance over the course of last season earned him that right, if not more.

I don't get what you are saying with give him the opportunity "if not more" part. Are you saying he deserves to start regardless of being vastly outperformed? That's the only thing to be inferred.

He will have a chance in practice to earn it back, and maybe a few drives a game. If those drives looked like the 4 he had today, I don't know how anyone can feel he is being treated unfairly.

Respectfully, I don't think so. Maaaaaybe the competition is not quite closed yet, but it's close.

Harbaugh does not yank his QBs around with a running competition throughout the year. He is not unwilling to have another guy win the job (see Kaepernick/Smith in SF) but he isn't the type to use the threat of job loss to light a fire under his existing QB. It takes some serious time for that transition to take place. Harbaugh has demonstrated at Michigan and other places that once he has named a starter, that guy has the job, and Harbaugh wants him to have the freedom to play and grow.

We saw it with Speight. We even saw serious patience with John O'Korn when the offense couldn't do anything in 2017. We saw it with Shea.

The scenarios in which the QB question is open are either a scenario in which JJ has seriously struggled across multiple games, or a scenario where JJ gets hurt and Cade comes in and lights the world on fire. Those are the only scenarios.

I felt frustrated with the situation, and with Harbaugh, by night's end. There's no way that having Cade bowed in humiliation--on the national stage--is an optimal, let alone planned for, outcome.

But Harbaugh has handled the situation to now. I have been willing to accept his assessments of the QB race at face value, and think JJ's coronation last night really was the product of a process that took time. If Cade has been refusing to look reality in the eye--as comments last week suggested--he got an eyeful last night. And a reminder that there may be another quarterback able to fill in.

Painful if you care about people's feelings. As a half-century-long fan, believer in the culture, I do. Thankfully, it matters to Jimmy, too. Let the healing begin, as they say.

JJ's performance was a thing of beauty. Too often in the past, Michigan has played with one hand behind its back, not using all of the talent we attract. Thirteen different receivers in the first half (!), the modern running game in full effect. . . the playbook is bigger with JJ on the field.

Learning it was a process. In the end, I think coach did alright.

How would you have played it differently?  I thought Harbaugh handled this with as much professionalism and grace as possible.  This is high level competition and he gave each contender opportunities to prove themselves both on and off the field.  Likewise, I feel terrible for Cade and hope he finds a way to pull himself together and continue to grow and contribute to the team.  Go Blue!

As an ardent (if message board silent) supporter of Cade as QB1, I don’t think Harbaugh has done anything wrong.

I at least suspect Harbaugh had an idea of how these two games would go and knew that Cade and all (like me) needed to see JJ prove he was better than the guy who just beat OSU and won the B1G Championship in order to accept his decision to go with JJ.

Like many others here, I hope Cade stays ready to lead the team in case there is a need.

I also accept that Cade probably transfers at the end of the season.  Personally, I will cheer hard for him unless he lands in East Lansing or Columbus, and I kind of hope he goes to Iowa and finds himself in Indy against 3 time defending East Division Champ UM.

The king is dead, long live the king.

As a McNamara supporter too, I hope he ends up at Arizona or Stanford or something not here in the Midwest. He's from out there. I don't want to play the guy who probably has a book in his head on every guy he practiced against.

The guy needs to get his head straight though. Adversity builds character, just takes a little time.

Wow!  That was a highly entertaining game.  It seems that JJ just had a better command of the offense last night.  Hard to believe it's sheer coincidence that the OL played better with JJ.  But we know Cade is capable of leading effectively also.  I think it's just a matter of getting accustomed to his new role.

I am thrilled for JJ and think he has tremendous upside. VERY excited to see what he brings to this team.

But I am also crushed for Cade. Tonight's poor performance aside, he led us to our first B1G title in years, is a great teammate and really has done nothing wrong. But as the old saying goes, no matter how good you are there is always someone better.

Just got done watching the extended highlights (don’t have BTN).  Couple of questions that I didn’t get a sense of.

1.  How come only one sack?  Was CSU an anomaly?  Did the DEs look good?

2. Is CJ Stokes the next back up after Edwards?

3.  Why was our 2nd /3rd string defense so bad against Hawaii?  Is it anything to worry about or just getting guys who need experience some experience?

4. Did Anoma (sp?) play?

1) Hawaii was throwing it in 2 seconds, using mostly 3 step drops and really quick routes.  Even the deeper drops featured a quick release...

2) Yes

3) They weren't bad - those 3rd & 4th stringers (including true freshmen all over the field - Amorian Walker is a WR and he was out there getting PT as a corner for the PT) were going against Hawaii's starters.

4) Yes, with the regular rotation players early, before the rookies came in

It's pretty clear it's time for JJ. Let him lead the offense another game. The offense just looks different. Nothing against Cade, but going with the seniority over talent may be what keeps this team from staying on top. JJ looks great, and Cade had his chance against the bad team and didn't measure up. Team looks good through two. Keep.the momentum up to Iowa. Go Blue.

There is no way to look at this game and think JJ shouldn’t be no 1 QB.

There is no way to look at last year’s MSU game and think Cade shouldn’t be no 1 QB.

Sometimes the ball just bounces your way, and yesterday was clearly JJ’s day and not Cade’s.

There is no way to look at last year’s MSU game and think Cade shouldn’t be no 1 QB.

He had a good game overall, but we still had to settle for four field goals, and one of our three touchdowns was thrown by JJ.  Cade had a couple of chances to lead us on a game-winning drive and we failed to score.  Overall he was the better QB that day but it wasn't necessarily a slam-dunk performance.

JJ's performance so far this year has been off the charts.  15-16 passing for 16 yards an attempt, and the one incompletion was a drop, plus 16.5 yards per carry and a TD?  That's almost literally flawless.

McCarthy's now the starter.  It's over and it should be over.  Harbaugh already announced McCarthy as the UConn starter.  Let me throw a bit of a conspiracy theory at you kids...

Last night McNamara played horribly.  However, if you payed attention, McNamara had to play with the 2nd-string or 3-string O-line.  If Harbaugh wanted a truly fair competition, why didnt McNamara play with the first-string line in front of him?  McNamara being forced to play with the 2nd/3rd string O-line never gave McNamara the same even chance McCarthy had vs Hawaii.  I think Harbaugh screwed McNamara for a reason...

I think the coaching staff, since the end of the fall camp, knew they wanted McCarthy as the starter.  However, McNamara did defeat OSU and did win the B1G, so the staff concocted this "2 game" situation between McNamara and McCarthy to legitimize McNamara starting vs CSU, that way McNamara still gets some of the respect he deserves for what McNamara accomplished last year.

TL;DR Since fall camp, coaching staff knew it was gonna be McCarthy for practically the whole season.  McNamara starting CSU was simply out of respect for McNamara's 2021 accomplishments.  There was never a true 2-game competition between McNamara and McCarthy.
