Hoops Recruiting Will Get Answers Comment Count

Matt EM November 11th, 2019 at 5:25 PM

All the speculation will be exchanged for concrete information this week. Will five-star commit Isaiah Todd sign early? Will two of Michigan’s remaining targets in Nimari Burnett and Hunter Dickinson be heading to Ann Arbor next year? These questions are widely expected to be answered in the coming days. Let’s take a look at where we stand with all three and welcome a familiar face a bit earlier than expected.

Nimari Burnett to Announce Tomorrow

Top-25 guard Nimari Burnett will make his college selection tomorrow between Michigan, Alabama, Texas Tech and Oregon at approximately 1pm EST via Instagram/Twitter. Michigan has been involved with Burnett for quite some time, starting with the John Beilein regime. The relationship grew stronger upon the Juwan Howard hiring and culminated in an early September official visit.

Nimari and family haven’t given away many hints throughout his recruitment, and very few have access to reliable information. All four finalists received an OV, and standard fluff-type substance was given in the aftermath of each visit.

Having been in communication with Burnett and family throughout the process, Michigan did a great job of checking the boxes. Nimari would’ve had the opportunity to play on-ball, with sufficient playing time as a freshman in a fast-paced offensive system.

That said, I do not expect Burnett to choose the Wolverines tomorrow. The staff did all they could here, but it would not be a surprise to see Texas Tech land$the Chicago-native tomorrow afternoon.

Early to the Party

2020 five-star guard Josh Christopher was tentatively scheduled to hit Ann Arbor in March, but will now visit Michigan on November 22 per Rivals.

The dynamic combo-guard is an elite scorer that possesses great athleticism and playmaking ability coupled with an infectious personality that makes him a can’t-miss prospect at the college level.

This is a long shot to be sure, with a family member on staff at Missouri, his brother currently suiting up for Arizona State and UCLA being heavily involved with a SoCal kid.

That said, visiting on short notice is certainly a nice development in light of the upcoming Burnett commitment that isn’t likely to be favorable. One has to assume that Isaiah Todd and Josh Christopher are having discussions about the possibility of teaming up and the thought of those two in the maize and blue makes your author very happy.

On to Something

Other outlets are starting to come around to the idea that top-40 center Hunter Dickinson is informally down to a top two of Michigan and Florida State after my initial report last week. 247 reported the same last week via the Michigan Insider:

“As best as I can tell right now, Duke isn't an option. Sounds like Michigan and Florida State are on the top line, with Notre Dame very much in the mix, but maybe a half step behind.”

I expect a decision at some point during the early-signing period. While Dickinson has played things close to the vest, it appears as though Michigan has a legitimate shot at landing the 7-footer with Duke supposedly no longer in consideration. The depth-chart favors the Wolverines along with the NBA pedigree of Juwan Howard.

Let’s hope the staff can close the deal on an upper-tier prospect for the second time in the last month.

Happy Trails

In a move that was$expected, top-60 wing Moses Moody committed to Arkansas last Friday.

It might sting, yes, but for all of those great ties to leverage, Howard and Oats are still first-year head coaches at their respective schools (Howard a first yr HC period, of course) and they can’t change that. Can’t blame Burnett and his family for wanting to select a surer thing. Most of us would want the same choice for our family.

If we miss out on Burnett, does Khristian Lander reclassifying become an option? I know we already have Zeb in the class, but he seems like he could be more of a combo guard. But also having junior DeJulius, plus Jackson and Lander would be a bit of a log jam

I would hope so if they can make it happen. DD hasnt shown anything yet (I know its early) that would keep me from bringing in a 5 star talent. I guess some of that would be what discussions they've had with Zeb also, you dont want to push him away. Most of these 20 kids are at the tail end of their recruitments.

So it seems like the most likely class is Todd, Dickinson, Jackson, and Howard. Pretty good class, but missing out on a Moody and Burnett does suck.

Juwan will have to wade through the cess pool of dirty recruiting and find talented kids that aren't on the take. I know Beileins recruiting style wasnt always the best and well received but I'm sure he saw all of this as well and steered clear of it for the most part.

Christopher moving his visit date up can only be a good thing or at least I’ll let myself believe that. I think either Lander reclasses if we miss on Christopher or we land Zaire Wade who looks like a late bloomer so might be a great pickup. Hopefully, Dickinson will commit soon and we have 3 top 60 guys!

I still believe more than others, Christopher is seriously looking at the Wolverines. I think Isaiah Todd is in his ear. If we can land Josh, look out because a bunch of players would instantly put us on their list.
