Exit Jalen Mayfield
Big ol' welp right here:

That has to be a record for the fastest a Michigan OL has entered the draft. Even if there had been a season Mayfield would have entered as a redshirt sophomore, and I can't recall anyone who'd managed that before. Taylor Lewan was the only guy in spitting distance in the last decade.
There is no content after the jump.
August 18th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
Because he started for only one season, will only be a redshirt sophomore, only had the one big game.
I get the whole, go work out and get ready for the combine argument and it has merit, but it just feels like there isn't enough tape, especially at a position that prizes development.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
Thing is pretty much every prospects will have that not enough tape argument so 2021 draft will be interesting
August 19th, 2020 at 6:20 AM ^
But all of that is going to be true for everyone else entering the draft.
He played well enough last year to be mocked in the first/second round. There isn’t going to be a season, so what exactly is going to happen to change that mock? They liked his tape enough to put him there. All of a sudden it’s supposed to be not enough and not good enough when nobody else adds any tape?
August 19th, 2020 at 6:31 AM ^
In most circumstances you'd have a point; I'd go as far as saying the neg vote was a tad harsh.
In most circumstances the amount of tape he's got to show he can play in the NFL is woefully lacking. In most circumstances, entering the draft this early is madness. But consider -- at the end of this year, the amount of tape he'll have to show the NFL will be exactly the same.
This isn't a DPJ situation where an overhyped player takes a flier on himself. Mayfield didn't announce until after the B1G cancelled footbaw. I'd say he's making the most of a bad situation.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
Beat of luck to him. Makes total sense and I think he'll be good in the NFL.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:13 PM ^
So... he's declaring for the NFL Undrafted Free Agent free-for-all next year, which may be in spring or summer. So, um... good luck to him. Better luck to any QB relying on a block from a guy who has like one season of college blocking experience.
When do the aliens land with their book TO SERVE MAN?
August 18th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
There will be more variance in the draft next year but I expect Mayfield will get a top 3 rounds draft grade and many teams will like his youth and lack of wear and tear.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:18 PM ^
We need to start recruiting players that we can develop into 4 and 5 year players even if they are 3 stars I don't care. It works well for Wisconsin. There are only so many elite 4 and 5 star guys that we mostly miss out on anyways. Let's just go back to basics and get regional.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:56 PM ^
Okay Sparty
August 18th, 2020 at 6:18 PM ^
Ope!
August 18th, 2020 at 6:21 PM ^
Good luck, Jaylen!
August 18th, 2020 at 6:22 PM ^
I'm going to get crushed for saying it but I think Saban is right when he says Spring football maybe JV football with all the top talent sitting out. I don't blame anyone but it would be rough not seeing Nico or Jalen on the field ever again.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:47 PM ^
Everyone going to pull the rip cord if they have a draft able grade.
UNC and ND are done. Kids are packing up and going home. MSU just told students to stay home and all classes will be remote online.
College football is toast in the fall and the spring if campuses are closing down. This virus only gets worse thru the winter.
August 18th, 2020 at 9:49 PM ^
funny thing is, if the campuses are shut down, much easier to keep the football players from getting sick, which means much easier to have football.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:50 PM ^
Problem is if campuses are shutdown and they have football games, it will challenge their amateurism status which B1G and NCAA do not want.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:52 PM ^
good luck young man, may you be drafted by one of the smart teams like NE, Pit, Bal or GB
August 18th, 2020 at 6:58 PM ^
Green Bay turned 30-ish consecutive years of HOF QB play into two rings. Two.
They don’t belong in the same stratosphere as the Pats/Steelers/Ravens.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:51 PM ^
Packers has done well with OL drafting like Bahktari, Buluga, Jenkins, Linsley, etc. so getting drafted by them means that Mayfield has a chance to succeed in the NFL
August 18th, 2020 at 7:01 PM ^
Congrats to the young man, but it seems too soon. Can't blame him with all the uncertainty.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:01 PM ^
Double post
August 18th, 2020 at 7:35 PM ^
Nico Collins and Kwity Paye can't be too far behind.
Is what it is.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:45 PM ^
WTF??? One mostly decent season at RT and he's draft ready? He played well, but jeez, he can't be but a mid-rounder right now, right?
I mean, congrats and good luck, and all. I hope it works out...
August 18th, 2020 at 7:58 PM ^
He’s going first or second round in most mock drafts right now.
August 18th, 2020 at 9:30 PM ^
He handled Chase Young pretty well 1 v 1 last year. All the tape scouts needed right there.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:59 PM ^
He never really handled Chase Young 1 on 1. He had a lot of help(well both Runyan and Mayfield). Mayfield was not good against OSU. His only good game was Bama where he was dominant.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:55 AM ^
He's got great raw talent and will be at least a late first rounder. He would have been our stud tackle if he would have stayed in school. I think if the season was not canceled, then he would have stayed to his junior year At least Harbaugh has our OL back in good shape with new talented kids ready to step up. Those 2013-2014 cupboard bare years are way behind in our rear view mirror. This may bode well for future OL recruiting.
August 18th, 2020 at 8:20 PM ^
So now we need to replace all five of our starting OL. Missing this season is going to hurt Michigan much more than most. This team is going to lose serious high end talent.
I was really looking forward to watching this team play.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:08 PM ^
Farewell, we hardly knew ye.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:08 PM ^
Best of luck to you Jalen. I'm surprised by how high he is on some of these mock drafts as a RT. With everything that's going on, if I thought I was going to go early in the draft, I'd do the same thing.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:20 PM ^
Pro sports sort of suck. I only watch the playoffs of NFL and NBA if my teams are likely to do well. It sucks even more that the pros steal our best players before we get to see their best ball. Covid sucks too. Bummed we won’t see a seasoned Mayfield.Happy the kid gets to play for some money.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:39 AM ^
Especially when you are a Lions fan. And why the hell do we have to watch the pregame clown show! Can't we just stop pregame activities such as the national anthem.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:36 PM ^
he's earned it... best of luck - in addition to making millions, make your family & friends, your university and yourself proud
August 19th, 2020 at 12:19 AM ^
He left because the big ten canceled the season last week.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:00 AM ^
I mean he was probably going to declare after the season right? So if/when they can practice all of those reps will go to the others so there’s that I suppose. Good luck big man.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:37 AM ^
Smart move. No reason to stay a year and there is no guarantee there will be football in 2021! Thanks a lot COVID!
August 19th, 2020 at 9:24 AM ^
He did basically neutralize young, which was pretty good.
Best of luck Jalen, I hope you have a long and prosperous NFL career.
August 19th, 2020 at 9:25 AM ^
This seems. silly. He's not ready.
August 19th, 2020 at 9:57 AM ^
More like May"not"field.
anyone? anyone?
August 19th, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
Fuck 2020
August 19th, 2020 at 11:29 AM ^
How many “F’s” are in way?
August 19th, 2020 at 11:51 AM ^
Strange days. Good luck to him. Hard to know the best thing to do right now.
