Yeah and clearly my take was that Mo left because of the issues within the program which I clearly stated I was most likely wrong about that. That doesn’t mean I don’t think the program has culture issues. Multiple players have came out and said for themselves there are issues within the program. Why do you think Partridge left on a lateral move or why we have had Washington go to OSU for the same job. Or why do you think we have had so many transfers compared to a lot of programs. There are clearly issues but I didn’t quadruple down on my take if you read my take correctly

Something wrong when an assistant coach (whom I'm assuming dreams of one day becoming a head coach) wants to take a head coaching position at a decent G5 school? Assistants don't normally just get head coaching jobs at Oklahoma, Alabama, or USC; they have to start at G5 schools and work their way up (unless they are being groomed by their current school, which I don't see happening at Michigan since he is brand new).

Not mad at him one bit if he leaves.  Has nothing to do with "Michigan Football".  If any of us were hired by a company, and shortly thereafter, another company came along and offered us our dream position I would bet 99% of us would leave.  I know I would.

That might be true with every other school or every other fan board, but here on MGo the correct answer is the only reason an assistant football coach would leave to be a Head Coach at another D1 school is because there are serious issues within the program. Clearly he realized the program is operating under a giant dark cloud and they will be lucky to win 5 games so he’s grabbing a life preserver before the ship sinks. It has absolutely nothing to do with becoming a Head Coach and moving up in the ranks.

Yeah, they have constant turnover on their coaching staff. Kevin Wilson has been around for a while because he was fired from his previous job for being a player abuser. This situation is unique because Les Miles got fired for being a sex creep at a really unusual time in the year, which led to an opening.

They do have quite a bit of turnover too. Maybe not as much as Michigan, but they also hire quite a bit of older assistants that have already done the head coaching thing as well that have no further aspirations. Guys like:

Greg Mattison - 71

Larry Johnson - 69

Kevin Wilson - 60

Kerry Coombs - 59

Greg Studrawa - 56

Tony Alford - 52

Conversely, Michigan has only one assistant coach that is over the age of 39, and that is 42 year old Ben Herbert. Younger up-and-coming coaches are much more attractive for openings.

Good point, but I would contest that Wilson was absolutely still climbing the ladder. He was fired from the Indiana job for player abuse and it limits his ability to get another HC gig. There are rumors about him leaving every year and he never leaves.

The only good thing about this is that kids likely would not leave to follow him to Buffalo. Either way, if this is the player to be named later from the trade for Warde, we got hosed.

Between the transfer portal, coaches jumping ship in a hot second and the lack of parity for the playoffs my fandom is dwindling quickly for college football.

Haha. Have to laugh. Guy couldn’t last 4 months working with Jim before bolting to the MAC.

The culture is beyond toxic.

If your goal is to be an HC, being an HC at a MAC school versus a co-DC at Michigan is a no-brainer.  And guess what, if UM has to replace Linguist they're going to pilfer a coach from another program at least a month after the guy had spring ball and has been telling recruits he loves his current place and plans on sticking around.  And there's a non-zero chance they pick up a guy who has also only been at a program for a short period.  Must be because the place he's at is toxic as well.

Anyway, I find the constant complaining and dire whining by people who just don't like rooting for a team they perceive as a "loser" hilarious and that part of the fanbase incredibly toxic.  But hey, by all means you do you.  And in the event Linguist doesn't leave and comes back, I assume you'll say the culture at UM is so toxic is scares away potential hires even at "Buffalo lol".

I have basically said the same thing. Me and you are realistic and more mad at the point of where Michigans program is at the moment not that someone will probably go on to accept a head coaching job. Culture isn’t a thing in the program and it’s ridiculous.

It would make sense if he went to Buffalo to be the HC, as that's a good MAC program that seems like a path to a P5 HC job.

Still would suck if he left so soon upon arrival.

Sure, but being a co-DC at a P5 program is a longer walk to HC opportunities compared to being an HC at a pretty good MAC program.

They are different paths but if one is made available to you now and the other relies on a bunch of other things going right for you in the coming years, I can see why you'd take the first one.

Fucking lol

Pretty sure people were calling this from a mile away when he was hired. Dude doesn't stay in one place for more than a year or two

Which was probably okay with Harbaugh if he brought in good talent on the recruiting trail. My understanding is that while Linguist is a "co-DC," MacDonald is really the DC and Linguist is a CB coach. Regarding Buffalo, this is a rather unique situation. The best job in the MAC opened up at a weird time because Les Miles was fired in shame. Linguist happens to have previously been employed by the school with an opening.

Not sure if this is going to happen, but when Coach Mo was first hired I claimed that he might not stay long based on his track record.  Even if this rumor ends up being nothing more than BS, I doubt he sticks around for the next season, even lower odds on 2 seasons in Ann Arbor.  The guy has bounced around a lot for someone so young in his coaching career.  I'm not criticizing his abilities as a coach or recruiter, just saying he seems like a Jedd Fisch type.  Always looking for that next gig.  Especially if its a promotion of some kind.
