I think they are trying to re-do the same thing they did with Hafley. Pair an NFL secondary coach with Mattison and run Day's preferred 1-high coverage scheme. That's the directive from the top.

Can Coombs do that? He's more of a college guy than an NFL guy. He's never been a coordinator or called a game. He taught an entirely different technique/scheme at OSU the first time.

He's a good recruiter. He's familiar with OSU. Can he call a game? Is he tactical? Is he quick with adjustments like Hafley was? Coombs has always been characterized as this fiery, rah rah position coach. No one has ever described him as a tactician. Doesn't mean he can't be one.

We'll see. I think Day and Mattison have a much bigger role with defense than we are led to believe.

Great recruiter, wasn't a great position coach.  Co-dc with Gmatt... Seriously wonder because I didn't care for Gmatts defenses here.  He did get us back to a solid defense.  But always gave up tons of points and yards vs good offenses.  You could read his defenses quite easily.  His defense is successful when he has a lot more talent than other teams but schematics goes deep coverage the second the other team has equal talent.  Ie Safeties 12yds off the ball and bailing at the snap.  If you can run on the front four and have a solid passing game you will get points and yards.  If our receivers can win it's 40+ points without a problem.

Not that different imo.  Brown is slow to adjust but he does.  Gmatt, has been the exact same since his days here in the 90's.  He's a solid dc but give him avg talent and he isn't to over come it.  Don Brown at least has shown he could while at BC.  Haven't seen it yet here.  Then again the next time he ever says "if anyone tells me" and Harbaugh doesn't tell him or give him walking papers.  It's Harbaugh for enabling.

I know there were rumors about this for a while now, but with the Titans DC retiring I wouldve thought that they wouldve made him an offer to be DC.

Gotta think that snake wouldnt be thrilled with keeping the CO on his title.

He doesn't have to coach as well because at OSU and LSU and Alabama et al the student athletes apparently don't have to fuss with the student part.

I am apathetic at this point about any news concerning that football program.  They are a machine, and the only thing that will stop them is some sort of catastrophic head coaching hire.

I will still watch and cheer on Michigan every Saturday, but at this point I don't expect to ever compete with that program like we used to.

I honestly think getting fucked over the way Harbaugh did in that 2016 game took something out of him that he hasn't been able to get back.  Like after getting a sideline penalty being told that if this was basketball it would have been a technical by the ref.  I have never been able to get that out of my mind.

I know he's supposed to be this great coach and fantastic recruiter, but I honestly don't know how much better OSU's recruiting can get compared to where it is right now. Minus one little hiccup last year after Meyer left, all of the guys currently on their roster (and guys who are incoming for 2020) are part of top-5 classes. In some cases top-3. Now that Day has proven he can still get to the playoffs without Meyer running the show, OSU will keep on keepin' on, bulldozing the recruiting trail just as they've been doing ever since Meyer showed up.

OSU is currently ranked #4 on Rivals and 247 for 2020. Is one more guy really going to make THAT much of a difference? They're already loaded with a staff full of guys who can recruit their asses off. Its a super-saturated situation, and I don't think Coombs coming back is going to make some kind of quantum leap for them. He helps, but its marginal returns because they're already essentially at the mountain top.

TL;DR version: This is nothing Michigan should lose anymore sleep over than it already does. There's not much difference between Michigan getting beat by 28 vs. maybe now we get beat by 31.
