Well, that was (not) fun
September 7th, 2019 at 4:09 PM ^
I mean, I really hate to say this but... Fire Gaddis?
Dude took away Ben Mason. We can't run power very effectively from the shotgun. Shea looks widely uncomfortable, despite this supposedly being a way easier offense or something.
The offense was not the reason we lost to Ohio State last year. We scrapped what was a really good Harbaugh manball scheme for this, and I'm sorry to the spread zealots out there, but Gaddis leaves a lot to be desired.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:10 PM ^
2 game sample size, calm down chief.
P.S. Coaches are not responsible for the drive killing fumbles.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:12 PM ^
Does this look like a team beating Ohio State and going to Indianapolis to you?
September 7th, 2019 at 4:16 PM ^
Did Army look like a team winning the Big 12, beating Texas, and going to the playoff during their Army game last year? Come on, it's game 2. Take a deep breath. We'll learn a ton about this team in 2 weeks.
September 7th, 2019 at 5:14 PM ^
Well Lincoln Riley and OU had demo started a recent track record that they could bounce back by producing championship teams and reaching the playoffs. Jim Harbaugh and Michigan have not.
September 7th, 2019 at 6:26 PM ^
I would be very impressed if we knocked off Wisconsin on the road.
I just don't know how we're going to do it at this point. They're going to run right at us and I can't see us stopping them.
I didn't expect the defense to be great, but I also thought the offense would be further ahead then what they did today.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:23 PM ^
I'm not even sure if we can beat @Maryland or MSU at home. Unless things dramatically improve we will lose @ WI, @ PSU home to ND and OSU.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:55 PM ^
It is early. We did win, which is all anyone will remember in November. The coaches on offense have a lot of work to do. The play calling was, to put it mildly, suspect and discipline was lacking. And they better get Shea put back together, and fast, or we need to go to plan B.
The defense I have no issues with. Don Brown had them ready and with a decent plan of attack. Aiden Hutchinson is going to be special.
September 8th, 2019 at 12:14 AM ^
The defense did well overall. However, it was disturbing to see repeated scenarios where Army had 3rd or 4th and short and Michigan would line up with a NT right over the center and then big gaps to each side...inviting Army to successfully run it right up the middle for the 2 yards they needed.
September 8th, 2019 at 7:52 AM ^
I'm going to remember in November. I'm going to remember this until I don't remember anything at all.
September 7th, 2019 at 10:16 PM ^
Don't forget a decent looking Iowa team. Only Gers and maybe Illinois are guaranteed wins.
September 7th, 2019 at 10:58 PM ^
Has this team looked like a team that could actually beat OSU in the last 15 years?
September 7th, 2019 at 7:53 PM ^
Yes, but the coaches are responsible when your OL outweighs the opposing DL by 50 pounds per man and you can't pick up 4th and 2 (twice).
September 7th, 2019 at 4:14 PM ^
Body-blow offense was NOT working against reasonably good teams.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:17 PM ^
Look at the bright side, at least we don't or won't have to worry about him getting another job someplace else after 1 year.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:22 PM ^
If we fire Gaddis, can we keep Gattis?
September 7th, 2019 at 10:56 PM ^
Is he related to Ruddddock?
September 7th, 2019 at 4:57 PM ^
Jesus at least spell his name right.
September 7th, 2019 at 5:26 PM ^
90% of our run game issues result from a quarterback who either won't or isn't allowed to pull on the zone read. It's wide open all the time. But when he won't do it, the defense can crash down on the inside.
September 7th, 2019 at 6:23 PM ^
Disagree. Our OL was not getting push against an undersized DL. Charbonnet is a very good back. He was constantly running into walls of people.
September 7th, 2019 at 8:25 PM ^
Disagree, he was running into walls of people because they were not using any defender to guard against the QB run. Our OL was very good in run blocking last year, especially in the interior where we return everyone. I doubt they all just regressed over the summer under Warriner.
September 7th, 2019 at 11:15 PM ^
On a lot of his carries, it was the DE who was sweeping down to hit at or behind the line of scrimmage. The ability to do that crushes an interior run game. Not that I was thrilled by the push of the OL.
September 7th, 2019 at 6:27 PM ^
This is why I assume Shea is injured. Or his mental switch has been flipped.
He was a madman pulling at the very last second all last year (to our benefit), and against MTSU.
His wincing, slow to get up, he's gotten popped a few times, the fumbles, way off the mark throws (yes the WRs had some bad drops), but something seems off with him.
September 7th, 2019 at 6:34 PM ^
Way to early for this. We wanted change. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Yeah, that was a poorly coached game. Stay tuned.
September 7th, 2019 at 6:44 PM ^
Not one thing about today’s game plan and play calling looked like any team Gattis has ever coached at. It DID look a heckuva lot like last year’s shitty mashup of Harball and Warriner Spread.
Don’t blame the assistant who was hired to modernize the offense, blame his boss for throwing a brick onto the brakes because he’s still not comfortable with modern football. That’s our reality. Harbaugh still doesn’t buy this shit but he’s being dragged kicking and screaming into modern football because there’s no recruits for old fashioned i formation football. He need to let the offense go and stop trying to force what should be a spread it out 3 wide team into running inside zone 188273 times with 49483 tight ends on the field for no reason.
September 7th, 2019 at 10:10 PM ^
Agreed. Harbaugh was calling the plays when things got close. The good part was we won with Harbaugh calling the plays. Army will make any team play to their level....not a bad win in all honesty.
September 8th, 2019 at 12:57 AM ^
There's a few happy Michigan fans out there, I'm one of them. A win is a win, especially with 3 fumbles, a TD taken away by the refs, and a couple of ill-timed defensive penalties. And damn if it wasn't an dramatic game.
Shea had a howler of a game--fumbled, missed some big plays in the air and had some mis-reads with the run. But scheme and skill wise, the plays were there. Shea either has to get fully healthy, get more time in the offense, or needs to be benched. Not sure which one.
And I think the run game will be better when Tru gets back and Turner re-gains the coaches trust on pass-pro. Fresh RBs always provide a bit of a burst.
September 8th, 2019 at 12:50 PM ^
I disagree - a win is not always a win, especially when your team didn't really play well enough to win. This was a major problem and bordered on coaching malpractice and seems to resemble a troubling pattern we've seen before.
Army is a GOOD team, I am not denying that. But Michigan is supposed to be much better and should not have had to barely escape with an ugly win. I don't think I'm out of line when I say Army deserved to win that game.
But it didn't need to be that way. Michigan could've challenged Army's defensive backfield by throwing deep to Collins and Black. They could've mixed up the play-calling so they weren't telegraphing runs. They could've stacked the box on Army's short distance downs. But they didn't do any of this and instead got bailed out by a bad Army INT and a missed FG.
But what really bothered me was the uncharacteristically boneheaded decisions by Harbaugh to not only go for it on those 4th downs but to also call terrible plays that seemingly had no chance of succeeding. I still don't understand why he just wouldn't kick the FG from the 19. It's such a simple decision. And then he didn't punt on the next possession giving Army an excellent chance to win the game. This is coaching malpractice. It made me wonder if he was like trying to lose the game.
September 7th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
"A really good manball scheme" is an oxymoron.
You are just a regular moron.
September 7th, 2019 at 10:45 PM ^
Ben Mason really the difference here? Is the problem with the offense a lack of runs up the middle? Bench is fun but no chance he’s doing anything that ZC and Turner aren’t doing.
September 7th, 2019 at 11:48 PM ^
I think Mason FB dive with Patterson under center gets at least one of those two 4th and 2 plays where we turned the ball over. What is the problem with running two or three of them a game, especially at the goal line. Yes, please change to the Gattis offense until you get to the 2 yard line. Then pound the fucker into the end zone with your beef up front. Fuck the shotgun shit when you're that close. It makes no sense.
September 9th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
Van Sumeran dive does same thing, 100% agree why start 7 yards back to go forward 2 yards, hurts my brain/
September 7th, 2019 at 10:48 PM ^
This is on Harbaugh. Not Gattis. Harbaugh has been a massive disappointment to say the least.
September 7th, 2019 at 10:59 PM ^
I was excited when we hired Gattis but I was tempered in my expectations because he has never called plays in a game. there is a huge difference in helping plan and set schemes to making real time game time speed decisions and so far he has left A LOT to be desired.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:18 PM ^
Bad. Army outcoached UM. Very bad. Very bad indeed.
September 8th, 2019 at 7:07 PM ^
Throwing on 3rd and goal from the 6 isn't genius coaching for Army. If they do what they do, they either score a TD or kick a FG - either way they are up two scores. Instead they pass and throw a pick. They had some bone head moments on their side too.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:32 PM ^
If Michigan started prep for this game in the spring, imagine how the team will do with only a week to prep for the next opponent!
September 7th, 2019 at 6:19 PM ^
Well then it’s a damn good thing Michigan has 2 weeks to prepare for the next opponent.
September 7th, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
Complete dog balls
September 7th, 2019 at 4:07 PM ^
Army out coached UM. Period. Army is good. Period. That should never have been that close. Full stop.
September 7th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
They did out coach UM but also lost the game with 3rd and goal from the 5. Worst play call of the game when UM hadn't stopped the run all day.
September 7th, 2019 at 5:33 PM ^
Army averaged 3.3 yards a carry.
September 7th, 2019 at 5:34 PM ^
Ummm, army averaged only 3.3 yards a carry. Defense actually did a very reasonable job against their run game.
September 7th, 2019 at 7:14 PM ^
At 3.3 yards a carry can you score from the 5 in two plays? Especially with momentum in your favor? A TD there ends the game.
September 8th, 2019 at 12:24 AM ^
semicolon, that game sucked.
September 7th, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
In JH I trust
September 7th, 2019 at 4:39 PM ^
Why? He fucked up not kicking a FG on their 20. Could have totally avoided the OT.
September 8th, 2019 at 8:12 AM ^
I think it was a good call to go for it but a bad play call. If you are going to go for 4th and 2 which I like, you better have a play in your back pocket. The ends were crashing down all game, they had a full run blitz, we all knew that was coming and what was the play call? Run into strength of D....Bizarre call to say the least.
