You have $15 to create your Michigan Football leaders

Submitted by BostonWolverine on

Thought this was kind of a fun exercise, even if it is the Freep. Don't worry, no clickthroughs.

My 5: Brady, Wheatley, Carter, Woodson, Crisler.

Who are your 5? Anybody you'd add or change?

Brian Griese

RB: Tom Harmon: $4

WR: Anthony Carter: $3

Defense: Charles Woodson: $5

Coach:  Harbaugh.  Lots of Value here.  $1

I'll go to the Casino, make $300 bucks, put it in a well rounded  low cost mutual fund preferably from Vanguard, wait a few years patiently, then buy all the players AND take your mom out to a nice seafood dinner.  Obviously I won't call her back, but she will still have the memories of that delicious seared tuna steak and very nice sangiovese.  Also the conch fritters were amazing, but those will sadly be forgotten. I'll come home and smoke a nice Padron Serie 1926 80th Anniversary Maduro Perfecto and while enjoying a nice glass of  Blue Label I picked up at Costco for a bargain.

QB: $2 Robo Henne - At Michigan, could make any throw and handle pressure. Only downside is that he's not super mobile, but neither is Tom Brady @ $1 more

TB: $3 Morris - Certainly good enough to keep the D honest and wonder on how to stop Henne & Braylon vs. Morris. Also, I don't think Hart is worth $2 more.

WR: $4 Braylon - Again, at Michigan could catch anything and has the connection with Henne

D: $5 Woodson - Shut down corner and can play WR and return Punts. No other choice.

HC: $1 Harbaugh - Why not. He's at least a hard ass and will get the players to work their hardest, which may/ may not have been the case while Henne and Braylon were at Michigan.

Griese, Wheatley, Carter, Woodson, Harbaugh. Wheatley at $2 is a steal. Griese won a NC, so getting him for $1 great too. This is actually pretty entertaining.

So we're assuming they're as good today as they were then?

Henne
Wheatley
Terrell
Woodson
Yost

I would have happily taken Drew Henson for $1 and added Bo. Most teams were so bad when Yost was coaching that it wasn't really a fair fight.

The alternative is Brady, Wheatley, Edwards, Woodson, and Harbaugh.

Really poor job allocating dollars, Freep.

Griese - Wheatley - Howard - Woodson - Crisler

Splurging on the Heisman winners because I feel like the gap between them and the guys behind them is greater than with the other positions. I'm least comfortable with Crisler because he's from so long ago. But he was an innovator, i figure he'd adjust and come up with some cool shit.

Griese – National Champion

Morris – leading rusher below 5’8”

Carter – AC!

Woodley – biggest arms in the NFL

Yost – 550-0

The biggest bargain on there is Tyrone Wheatley for $2. Are you kidding me? He was a threat to take it to the house every time he touched the ball! Stud

3 that don't take a back seat to any in their class for only $5 total. Have to take Woodson - best defensive player ever for another $5 - leaving you to take any receiver. Hard to argue with Howard.

Henne, Wheatley, Howard, Woodson, Harbaugh

Assuming this is solely based on their college performance, I would take: Leach, Harmon, Trrrell, Brown, and Yost.

It's interesting to see the monetary value allotted to some of the players. Although there is an element of "recency" to the allocations, it's surprising to see Hart, Edwards, and Bo towards the top of their respective lists. While all three obviously hold special spots in Michigan history, I'm not sure they are better than some of their peers on the list.

How is the A Train only $1, second all time leading rusher and the best skill wise in my opinion! No Drew Henson?

I'll go Griese, A Train, David Terrell, Chuck Woody, Bo aaaand a dollar to spare!

Henne, Harmon, Carter, Woodson, Harbaugh.

You have our all-time passing leader, arguably the greatest player in college football history, arguably our best WR of all-time (albei no Heisman), the only defensive player ever to win a Heisman, and a young coach who has won BCS games and been to the Super Bowl.

(A) Lol Freep stealing the All-time NBA thing floating around for a couple years

(B) Some of their rankings seem super dumb

(C) My answer (assuming this is all based on their time in college, if it factors in their pro careers my answer is difference): Griese, Wheatly, AC, Woodson, Yost.

Henne, Wheatley, Carter, Woodson, Carr

Interesting to me that Henne is cheaper than Brady considering we are just going on how good they were in college

With Woodson on almost every list this got me thinking.  Is the following statement true?

"Charles Woodson is the greatest Michigan football player of all time"

I think my answer would be yes.  I know there is a Brady argument but that would really be that Brady is the greatest Patriot or NFL QB.

What do you all think?

I would agree with that statement, though you could argue a couple others. Mixing generations is hard though. Brady is not in the discussion unless the question is "greatest NFL player who went to Michigan".

My 5:

  • QB - Henne.  While Brady's pro career is surreal, Henne was a better college QB.  Leach and Harbaugh are too pricey, and Griese has the grit but not the game.
  • RB - Thomas.  This list really demonstrates the talent we've had at RB.  Only Hart is above Thomas in career yards, and Thomas beats everyone in TDs.  I'll take that for a buck.
  • WR - Howard.  Perhaps the best collegiate WR ever, Desmond Howard was impossible to cover, and a special teams ace as well.
  • D - Woodson.  Probably the best collegiate defensive player ever, Woodson also helps on special teams and offense.  A value at $5.
  • Coach - Crisler.  A national championship and undefeated season in '47 where only two games were within a TD.  Everyone else got smoked.

This is the right answer.
