Why is everyone so enamored with this kid?

He's a one and done.

***He played in a weak conference and was only an honorable mention all league***

If we truly can't figure it out amongst Hudson, Runyan, Spanellis, Steuber & Filiaga then we suck.

My own personal hope is that we see an interior of Onwenu - Spanellis - Ruiz. Then you could add Bredeson to the Steuber, Filiaga, Runyan, Hudson mix (I'm sure there is one or two more guys you could throw in there too).

Anderson helps but I think they have guys already on the roster who could be capable. I do think that at least one guy is going to have to breakout and become a "guy" or "dude".

This is my thought, based on too little info. Spanellis practiced well enough to get on the field, and have the coaches talk glowingly about him. He's rumored to be one of the smartest guys on the team. And he played well in that very small sample size. Doesn't appear to be a tackle though, and probably won't be as pulverizing at guard as Onwenu and Ruiz. He gets the start at center, as crazy as that sounds. Because now you've got nowhere for Bredeson, who's played a lot of football. I think Onwenu and Ruiz are better guards. Would be great if Bredeson could play tackle, but he doesn't look to be great at pass pro.

He's a proven commodity who can compete right away for the weakest spot on our team. I think that if we get anything resembling competent OT play, then we have one of the better lines in the Big Ten (considering that Bredeson, Ruiz, and Onwenu should be one of the better interior OLs in College Football). Anderson all but guarantees that.

Probably because Jake Rudock is still fresh in our minds. Granted that no one really knew that he'd be a big asset to the team but he turned out to be the one catalyst the team needed to finish the season as it did while he was under center.

I'm not suggesting that Anderson will be anything like Rudock -- obviously, they play different positions -- but he has the gravitas to possibly help fortify the OL and fill a position of need.

Since we are dealing in unknowns, any floor for next season is a potential floor. I'd think was understood.

In terms what's already been seen on the field, there's no question that his floor is higher than that.

I can't grasp why you (and not just you, tons of people here just like Champeen below) refuse to acknowledge the fact that you don't know anything about Calvin Anderson. That being pretty good at Rice, one of the worst football programs in america, is not a guarantee that he can hack it in the Big Ten.

You call it nit-picky, but you just did it again. "There's no question" Anderson is better than anybody Michigan put on the field last season?

Based. On. What?

Give me something. Right now, until you explain your reasoning, that statement is rooted in blind faith.

There were 10 all-conference C-USA linemen named last year. Calvin Anderson wasn't one of them.  He's one of about 17 linemen listed as honorable mention.  He's possibly the 27th best lineman in one of the worst coferences in FBS college football.  We already know he played on one of the worst teams.

How about these guys?  Are these guys better than every single University of Michgian offensive lineman?

Will Hernandez of UTEP? Brandon Ray of Western Kentucky? O'Shea Dugas Jr. of Louisiana Tech?  Eugene German of Charlotte?  Isaac Weaver of Old Dominion?

What do you know about those guys? Those are all-conference C-USA guys too. They're all better than EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MICHIGAN'S LINEMEN?

Or is it just guys that want to transfer? Does transferring make players awesome? Can we check with John O'Korn on that?  (O'Korn will agree - until that player officially sucks on the field, it definitely makes them awesome on the MGoBoard!)

And that's all I've got. If you can't reach the logical conclusion here, you'll never get there. I hope he comes here because he might help. He also might not. I don't know. I've never seen him run a Harbaugh scheme under Ed Warinner's tutelage against better defensive ends than he's ever seen in his life.  Hell, I've never seen OUR offensive linemen under Ed Warinner's tutelage. Maybe Drevno was that terrible.

I'll never understand why this board refuses to accept that possibility.

With you at all. I don’t think anyone can get around your logic. It’s simply just another tool in the box. Is it the right tool? Maybe, maybe not. But it’s pretty easy to say and understand that the team has a better shot with him than without, even if he doesn’t start. He can only make us better. Hence, the need for him.

by PFF, an objective and generally respected source often quoted here. Will Hernandez is projected as a first round pick in some of the mock drafts, btw

For all your bluster, you seem to be ignoring what information is out there.

You also purposely misquoted me. Go ahead and nitpick and say you it's not a misquote. You used my actual words but changed the statement that followed it and left out the context.

I said "In terms what's already been seen on the field, there's no question that his floor is higher than that."

"There's no question" Anderson is better than anybody Michigan put on the field last season?

I want him here. I've said so repeatedly. I'd take every transfer and all the recruits if I could. I'm happy to throw Anderson in the mix and see how it shakes out.

There are a large number of people here who have convinced themselves of something that is a complete uncertainty, with no justifiable reason to back it up.

hes better than any tackle we can roll out, so yeah, he is a pretty big deal.  Our recruiting misses at Tackle are absolutely killing us.  Where did the days go that elite tackles were kicking down our doors to come here.

Juwan Bushell-Beatty? I know we've heard some things from UMBIG11 about him being gone or on the verge of it, but I believe I've seen him in at least one of the off-season workout videos being published. And Mason Cole mentioned him in an interview just a few days ago. He was the starter last year. Yes a turnstile often in pass pro, but a bruiser in the run game. Very unlikely that he gets much better at pass pro, but it's crazy to me that again he's being completely dismissed. He is a returning starter at tackle and this team needs tackles, ergo he's in the mix. It's always possible that some level of his pass pro problems were caused by lack of commitment, and he could change that in one off-season (I have no idea, just posing a hypothetical). And Warinner could work his magic. If he went from terrible at pass pro to below average, that would significantly raise the floor on this team. Because he's a plus blocker on the ground and he and Onwenu together is something defenses have to think about planning around. Yes I hope Steuber or Honigford or Filaga or Ulizio are awesome. But JBB is in this equation.

The guys you listed have 0 starts at LT combined. Anderson is a 3 year starter with a 4th rd NFL draft grade. No one on the roster is currently regarded as an draft pick. Scouts already value him higher than Mason Cole, and he still has a year to improve. None of the guys you listed beat out Cole last year. I think it's reasonable to expect he's an upgrade and to pencil him in as the starter if he came here.

Don't let your weekend be ruined by a one and done's decision.  If he comes here great, if not, c'est la vie.  We'll ride with what we've got.

Some bad mouthing of a great recruit our coaching staff wants to bring on board. Genuinely hope he picks Michigan to boost his NFL stock. You also have to remember these are the examples our coaches want to be able to cite to new recruits. "We took a guy from Rice and in one season made him a high round draft pick, imagine what we could do with you in 4 years"...
