WR Daylen Baldwin videos from today, interview, analysis
There's two new videos featuring Michigan's new transfer portal WR, Daylen Baldwin.
The first is an interview. Among other things, he talks about what is was like playing for Deion Sanders. His confidence level went high playing for him. He also talks about how he's played several different positions in his football history, including every offensive line position except center. He's played every "in the box" position on defense. His ability to block and willingness to block from playing offensive line shows in his WR game film.
Second is some film breakdown from Stephen Osentoski of Maize N Brew.
I think Michigan is getting a better player than most Michigan fans realize.
I’m excited about having Baldwin in the WR room. Now we just need a QB that can consistently get him the ball and an offensive scheme that can get those WRs open with space to run. I really hope McNamara/McCarthy and Gattis can surprise and the offense can take off this year.
+1 to OP. This is how you post-informative content, great summary of posted material.
35 catches. 550 yds. 6 scores.
In 6 games, a half season. I think it was 7 TDs.
EDIT: I looked it up:
I meant what I hoped for this coming season.
For those who are tired of hearing “trust the staff” and comparing our recruits to OSU’s, maybe this will help….Ohio State probably has the best pair of WR’s in the country with Olave and Wilson. They have something like five other wr’s who were 5 stars or ranked in the top 100 overall and they just lost an experienced and very talented receiver to Alabama because of their depth at the position, yet they were willing to upset that room and risk additional transfers by trying to bring Baldwin to OSU. - It’s obvious to see how highly regarded he was to their staff. It’s too bad Worthy didn’t stick around to see what this offense could be, especially next year. I think Baldwin has two years of eligibility.
I agree OSU knows he's great WR but I think the main reason they offered, is that they did not want him to go to Michigan. That gets me excited since we may have a true down field threat. Now it is time to find the starting QB, who can get him the ball.
I think you may be trying to like the kid too hard. He has talent, he can help UM. But OSU was not bringing him in to upset the WR room and step on toes. The depth of the room is young, they were willing to bring the kid in to add some experience to the depth. Obviously the kid decided (and I think he made the right decision) that his path to playing time and a possible NFL career is not in Columbus.
He spits hot fire!
I hope the offensive staff gives him a real opportunity. I'm tired of promising WRs getting Nico'd... I swear to god, if his first play is a jet sweep I'm going to throw a shoe at Harbaugh's face on the TV.
Nico'd? Is that the official name we're giving to criminally underused WRs?
I'm ok with it for sure, just want to know that's the right one to use.
Also available were:
Norfleeted
DPJ'd
Throw the wheel to Chris Evans'd
Now I'm sad.
If you want a term for "criminally underuse a talented Michigan receiver" you can do no better than "Jim Smithed"
FWIW he grew up an OSU fan and chose UM because he was going to be somewhere between #5-7 on OSU's WR depth chart versus UM who told him he would be #1-2 in ours. I don't really care, and kuddos to Day/Hartline for being honest and telling him they don't project to him to be a starter.
As soon as he and Cade McNamara get comfortable and confident with each other, I think he's going to be #1. Maybe that will happen by the Western Michigan opener.
Until I see it on the field, I refuse to get excited about a wr the way this staff has completely mis used that position repeatedly
Chicken or egg? Is it the staff's fault or the QBs? Rudock didn't have a problem spreading the ball to Chesson, Darboh, and Butt. Patterson and Milton just couldn't consistently find the open WR to get them the ball. Is that the coaching or the player? Before we can develop WRs we need a good QB.
If for 3 straight years your quarterbacks can't find open receivers then the coaching is failing the quarterbacks, which is in turn failing the receivers.
I think you'd be talking about Pep Hamilton and Josh Gattis.
On the flip side, look how much Jedd Fisch got out of Jake Ruddock and Wilton Speight!
It's just a shame that Jim McElwain didn't also coach the QB the year he was here. Would have been fun!
I expect that he'll be able to put up a couple hundred receiving yards. I would be absolutely shocked if he gets more than 500.
Daylen is not a particularly physically gifted WR for this level of play. I do see him, however, as possessing a trait that approaches "elite". He may not have the athleticism to get much separation but his catch radius is exceptional. His long arms, strong yet soft hands and his ability to adjust to the ball in the air makes him very difficult to defend. To me, he appears to be an outstanding possession receiver prospect.
