The Wolverine Podcast: 2017 recruiting
I have linked a podcast from the Wolverine. They extensively go over the recruiting numbers for the 2017 class and a breakdown for each position.
- John Borton said that the class will be at least 30, but could be as big as 32-33.
- 25 recruits are allowed per class, but Michigan can backdate 5 2017 recruits to the 2016 class by EE (they would start in January 2017).
- He mentioned that the 2016 class was technically 20 because of the EEs that were backdated to the small 2015 class.
- The NCAA allows oversigning in February by 2 or 3 players as long as they are below 85 in fall camp (I believe).
- Borton said there are 24 players on the team that are either 5th year seniors or true seniors (I would assume that includes Clark and Drake Johnson). I thought that number was actually lower, around 19 or 20.
- To get to 30 (or 32-33), he said it won't likely be a problem because some redshirt juniors will not receive a 5th year, there will be some transfers, and a few players may enter the draft early (he mentioned Peppers and I personally think Hurst could leave after this year).
It is a good listen if you are wondering how Michigan is going to make room for all the recruits!

Please stay another year, Mo Hurst! His belly-rubs and insane PFF grades each week are absolutely needed.

24 true seniors or 5th year seniors seems way off - the mgoblog depth chart by class lists 17.

I know they're trying to be aggressive, but I just don't get the point of blueshirting or even, grey-shirting. The next couple of classes are going to be really small, so why are they trying to load them up with guys who may not be at quite the level of prospect as whomever they can get in 2018?
Just seems like putting the cart before the horse a bit. Hopefully a lot of this is borne by being excited over who is interested in coming and once guys start committing, everything will settle out to normal numbers without the shenanigans.

Going to love watching this recruiting class come together.

Wow...that seems like a ton of turnover. I'm not sure how I feel about replacing a 5th year senior, who should be able to produce something of value given they would have 2 years experience with JH, with a FR that will likely not be physically mature and/or have anywhere near the understanding of the playbook.
Whatever, In Harbaugh I Trust. If he thinks it's the right move, it's the right move.

when you look at it. We are at 24-ish when looking at true SR or RS SR players and the existing unused (or walkon) scholarships.
Add Peppers and a few non-renewed 5th years and you are close to 30. You also have to guess that O'Korn will leave for his last year -- Purdue needs a QB! - particularly if Peters is pushing as hard as people have hinted.
This is even before a possible Hurst (or Cole) departure. (Hopefully neither). Hawkins becoming a 2107 commit and 2 possible 6th years would affect the number downward.
Another thing of note from the podcast is that he projects potentialy as many as 10-12 EEs - 5 backdated to 2016 and the rest coming from 5th years who will graduate at the end of this term. (Key number there is the max 85 on scholarship at any time.)

Borton. Haven't heard that name in a long time. The Wolverine is still a thing, I guess.

What could you possibly be basing this degree of confidence on?

For one, he hasn't been mentioned much by NLF scouts per today's article
Michigan is set to have a dozen guys drafted, and you'd better believe that'll perk up recruits' ears. That goes double when scouts are praising Harbaugh's development as the direct cause of said draftees. Best part of this: no Maurice Hurst. Let's keep that on the low for another year, yes please.

hurst is obviously drafted should he decide to leave, that dude can play. i dont know him or his situation but id guess hurst returns - hed be the man, likely earn all conference honors and whatnot, be relied on for 50+ snaps per game and earn an even higher draft grade. then again hes clearly a pro prospect and prob off the board in 1st 4 rounds, maybe hes graduating and ready to move on, maybe most of his friends are leaving, etc. either way, dudes in a nice spot
