William Strampel Arrested

Submitted by enlightenedbum on

Undisclosed charges.  Larry Nassar's former boss, the Dean who was actively rooting for him and discounting the victims stories while he allowed Nassar to abuse more girls.  Failure to report or obstruction of justice seem like the obvious options here.

Sad for Strampel and his family, but you reap what you sow, and he sowed this pretty good.

He could have stood up to protect young girls from a predator, but other considerations were more important to him.

We don't know what the charges are, but I take no joy in someone else's shortcomings.  He probably will feel the bite of human justice, and I can think of few more heinous crimes than those he is alleged to be complicit in.

Whether or not he deserves it was not the point I was making.  He's a human being.  Lighten up Francis.

That said, the victims continue to suffer, and shall do so for the rest of their lives.  That's what the real sad story is.

Don't worry---you're going to get your pound of flesh here.

needed was one person to stand up. Everyone involved made a conscious choice to turn the other way. For some, it is time to reap what they sowed. Friends and family will be hurt but that can't be helped at this point. Let the chips fall where they may.

I realize that the MGoFanboyze are going to love this story because Sparty/jail/BurnItDown, et cetera.

But for those who are interested in how victims might get compensated, this development is more complication than it is vindication, at least in terms of civil tort claims.

When an institutional actor like a Nassar or a Strampel is found guilty of a felony, it raises lots of questions about whether insurance coverage exists for what the law regards as the ultra vires actions of the individual in question, and whether the institution is vicariously liable for criminal acts outside the scope of the individual's employment and/or agency.

This could be the subject of a law review article, or even a hundred law review articles.  But the bottom line is that while a lot of people are going to think this is great news in the public relations battle against all things related to the administration of Michigan State, it is actually a very thorny legal problem and not all bad for the insurers.

I'm finding it difficult to think of reasons why Michigan State University should be able to continue as an institution of higher learning.

When molesters are protecting molesters, there is a rot which cannot be excised beyond burning the whole damn institution all to the ground and rebuilding from the ashes.

Didn't see this coming.  I expected charges would have been filed on Klages.  The prosecutors took their time and ensured ducks in a row for this one.. and no leaks.

(William Strampel) is facing criminal charges for allegedly inappropriately touching a student and storing nude photos of female students on his work computer.
William Strampel, who was dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine until late last year, was charged Tuesday with a felony, a high court misdemeanor and two misdemeanors. He is due to be arraigned in the afternoon.

going forward with the current administration (including BOT) just got even less tenable.  They cannot continue down the Engler path of deny and obfuscate.  If someone does not impose that change, MSU might well end up a dramatically smaller institution.  The more they fight, the bigger that current cost of $500MM gets.

The people that allow these situations to happen are clearly not of the same species as the part of humanity that is horrified by this.     The predators are obviously dangerous animals that have to be locked away.  But, the people covering it up are even worse.  They are the zookeepers that repeatedly open the doors and let the animals attack... and then blame the people that were mauled.

Those responsible need to ruined in every way possible.  The students, faculty, and public at large should demand no less at this point.
