Why is the board so testy & toxic lately?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Can't we all just get along? So many personal shots and attacks going on in many threads and that bothers me.

we're all different and we all have different backgrounds and come from different places but we come here because we're all Michigan fans.

People don't make multiple threads to be malicious and, IMO, don't deserve anything more snarky than a gentle reminder.

In many threads, there is so much trivial back and forth commenting that has nothing to to with the OP that content becomes the exception rather than the rule.

This may be true but I think we should all keep in mind that this community is growing. When that happens you get newbies (like myself) who post things after it has rolled off the board side banner of the web page without doing a search first. It's in error no doubt. Hopefully the posters learn from the mistake. None-the-less we should be excited that the community is growing because it means people are excited about Michigan once again! Just my opinion....

Than repetitive threads, a lot of new posters don't seem to realize that this blog is more of an on line "community" than it is an M live comment board. With new posters I find unnecessary snark, king of trolling just to troll. The veterans on here mostly just treat discussion as back and forth banter whereas a lot of newbies try to "win" a thread instead of just contributing to a conversation.

I agree with the "winning the internet" argument 100%. Also objective comments regarding rivals and other subjects not seen through maize tinted glasses used to produce good discussion are now just trolled with snarky, idiotic responses.

They are very unaware they are being losers. This is a Michigan community. From my perspective, it is a forum for information/education related to Michigan. It has been infiltrated with narrow-minded, insecure "alpha" dogs with fragile egos. It can be very toxic to read... However... it is also a source of tremendous entertainment; there are sooooo, many witty, hilarious members along with many really intelligent, insightful posters. Just stop before you post and THINK, remember if you don't have anything good to say...

I have 2015 join date but I have lurked on this blog long enough to know the un-written rules and how people interact with one another. There's really no place like it on the Internet. But lately... posterz gonna post

And since it sounded familiar I looked back on past comments. Here's one I posted in 2013… "Grammar corrections are not an issue for me. I do think there is a certain "standard" this site pride's itself on and is the reason I come back to it time and again. (Seriously, no matter how bad you may think some of the comments here may be, just head out to other sites and read through their comments… not pretty). The correction replies do become a problem though when they devolve into gamemanship. It's the gamemanship which seems to be the more characteristic form of replies on a lot of threads these days. Instead of adding to the dialouge, many responders (whether they are kings of the internetz or plebes) seem to be vying to one up one another in an attempt to prove wit and author the next meme. Sometimes it's hilarious and appropriate, but more often (or perhaps just more recently?) it's become tedious and way too predictable." I know this does not match up specifically with what is being discussed here, but it did make me think about whether or not the alpha-element or perception of devolution isn't always there in some form. Perhaps it's just cyclical?

Honestly the Durkin stuff has caused me to avoid the blog since Sunday. Quite a few guy's on here acting like a teenage girl who's boyfriend just broke up with her after prom. The level of immaturity on in some of the threads since the Durkin announcement has been nauseating.

I think some of the "best of luck, glad we even had him for a year" Brady Hoke era apologist speak has been pretty pathetic. He burned us man. He was in college park when he was most needed this year, it showed on the field, and people are understandably upset about it.

Some irrational people are upset about it. I wouldn't say that it's understandable however. Then again I haven't been 15 years old in twenty one years so what would I know about behaving like a child?

First, I agree with you 100%.

Second, however, I am disappointed in you. The OP mentioned "toxic testes" in his post, and you totally didn't tee-off on that softball (or softballs, if you'd prefer).

Third, the holidays make people assholes in general, in my experience...

Because of this thread.

Honestly, I think its the impending holidays combined with uncertainty in the coaching staff which causes uneasiness which causes people to become cantankerous.
