Who Makes Personnel Game Decisions

Submitted by Hail-Storm on

After reading the UFR, and remembering the hard bench that Smith saw after the fumble, I had a quick question about how Michigan handles personnel during a game.

Running backs this year has been unique with 4 running backs getting a large number of snaps. Does anyone know who makes the call on who goes in? Is it Wheatley who is in charge of that meritrocity, and they all are expected to handle the same play sets? Is it somewhat playset dependant? Is it a combo of Jed Fisch and him, or Jed, Ty, and Drevno? Does Harbaugh bother with those decisions?

Thanks to anyone who has some feedback.

The RB on the field, after a play will make two of several hand signals.  obviously, we don't know what the specific gestures are, but they indicate the following options with one hand:

  • I'm tired
  • I'm hurt
  • I'm thirsty
  • I need to go to the bathroom
  • I'm staying in

With the other hand (using Deveon as the on-field example):

  • send in Ty
  • Send in Chris
  • Send in Karan
  • Where's Drake?

Drevno said yesterday in his presser that he limits reps because he wants to get guys drafted.

The average career for an NFL running back is around 3 years now. Drevno said NFL scouts prefer backs with less miles on them now compared to 30 carry a game rbs. Michigan is able to do this now because production doesn't fall off.

Good for recruiting because it gets you drafted, and gets you some touches as a freshman.

I read in a Mlive article that Isaacs was quoted saying "we never know until Coach Wheatley calls us."

I'm not sure if JH is telling Wheatley what he wants or if he lets Wheatley make the call on which RB to throw in

I dont think O'Korn is suited for Harbaugh style offense. Its not that Speight is necessarily more talented it just looks like O'Korn does not have the patience necessary and is more of a high risk in terms of turnovers and with this defense is unnecessary, even though I am not all that enamored with Speight myself
