Who Is Going to Work Tomorrow?

Submitted by xtramelanin on March 22nd, 2020 at 8:46 PM

Mates,

Seems like we have a wide variety of occupations and locations.  Some would be 'ordered' either by a gov't agency or by their employer to stay home, some are just asked to stay remote, some are laid off, some are going in.

Question:  Are you going to work tomorrow, and whether the answer is 'yes' or 'no', why?

Be safe,

XM

I’ve got to go in because the take home laptop they gave me on Friday doesn’t work. Need to get a different one.

A reality for some. I was on my honeymoon in Ireland until 3-15. I got a company wide email around 3/12 or so basically saying if you were abroad you would have to come home to do a mandatory 14 day quarantine and would be forced to use your own PTO. Then, after your PTO was used up, you went unpaid until post quarantine and getting cleared by employee health at your specific location(s) of work. They also would not allow you to donate PTO to anyone. At that time, I had 3 or 4 days left for the entire year, and my wife is currently out of work, and I have a 3 year old. The company and CEO later reversed course and changed their tune, after a mass of emails from people wondering what the fuck

I'll likely go in one day this week because (a) I have enough meetings that with my wife also WFH and two kids out of school, it's a bit of a madhouse with everyone running around, and (b) it lets me stock up on supplies that, surprisingly, are easier to find in the city than where we are.  But downtown Boston was a ghost town last week and it's seemingly only gotten moreso since I last checked in.  I do get a sense that we've got another week or 2 before people start coming back simply because productivity is just plummeting everywhere and a lot of companies are realizing they were more paycheck-to-paycheck than they thought.

I will be going to work with no shutdown in site! I work for Pfizer in Kalamazoo and farm 1000 acres in southwest Michigan with my dad. I hope everyone stays healthy and we can weather this storm. GO BLUE!!〽️

I work in the construction services division of a large engineering firm. Was just sent a corporate email today that we are staying open unless mandated.

The corporate office is in a "mandated" state, so yeah.

I am working tomorrow because I am in an industry deemed by the U.S. government as "essential critical infrastructure" (i.e. defense and national security).  Now, I will likely work from home most of the day but I will be working.  Job security, eh?  But working from home is difficult with a 2.5 year old so I will do my best to make it seem like I am being productive.

I work for a defense contractor and my company is using the excuse that we are essential to the Air Force (which we are) to try and force people to go into work. The issue I have is that engineering can 100% work from home (and individuals do all the time for lame reasons) but when a pandemic hits they crack the whip on us. It's confusing and disappointing.

My company has encouraged working from home.  We manufacture things and can only do so in our clean room.  Part of my job is assembly support so I only have to go in if my support is required.  Otherwise I am working from home.  Sorry about the whip cracking on your end.  Seems they should be more amenable.

Buck has shut down both Strickland North and Strickland East. I pleaded that we were “essential services” but he said, “I don’t got the money to keep paying you, old top”.

Anyway, Peggy is substitute distance teaching, and Bobby and I have a camping trip planned since he doesn’t have to go to school. Hopefully we can make a man out of him.

Going in.  Only slightly nervous for myself, very nervous for the kids with cancer I’ll be taking care of. Don’t know what the week is gonna bring in the hospital.

Won't be going in tomorrow or anytime for a long time. I was laid off on Wednesday by my best friend. It's a very small company (3 employees) and the profits are/were salaries. No profit, no salary. I have a decent fallback option to work for my girlfriend for at least the next few months. But my best friend - I don't know what he's going to do.

Been work from home since last Monday. Hopefully have job security as I work for a large truck manufacturer and we're considered a "critical infrastructure" industry.

Not going back until school is open again. Preparing some things for my students to work on online, and helping my boys with their school routines at our house.

I'm going in. I do mapping for a municipal water company and though my job is not vital, I'm sure my bosses will have no plans to let anyone stay home. We could easily just have a plant operator and on call crew to handle emergency repairs, but that would take planning and competent decision making. I'm guessing city hall will be closed but all the enterprise departments will be working for the duration of this.

Nope...I'm a HS teacher and we are currently closed until 4/27, although I'd be surprised if we go back before the fall, but we'll see.  So far the school has committed to paying everyone, even support staff like ed techs and there are no layoffs because the financials don't really effect schools.  This is one of the times it's nice to be a teacher in spite of the relatively low pay in relation to the education required.  But, we are doing online distance learning and required to be available electronically during normal school hours.  We will be having a virtual department head meeting tomorrow to discuss grading and attendance policies going forward.

Umm you are aware that they just announced that the online distance learning is not counting for anything... so you may be going back to work in the summer if stuff clears up.

I have several friends that are teachers and they were all informed last week about it.  So they are expecting they may have to work during the summer up to catch up.

That is in MI.  In Maine we are not experiencing that.  That being said, I'd be perfectly happen to return to work.  I personally enjoy the structure of a work schedule and don't like having 3 months off.

I will be working from home for the second week in a row.

Thankfully, my company was deemed “essential” by the government so I should not be laid off or anything like that.

I’ll be working.  I’ve been a Border Patrol Agent in Arizona for about 12 years.  I feel fortunate to have a steady income during times like this.

Appreciate it.  I always enjoy your discussions on the board.  I could be mistaken but I think I’ve read you had a career in law enforcement?

No. A booming economy is lost to a virus that may continue for another year or more. No career movement, opportunities, or job growth. Don't expect to go back anytime soon.  May-June? Even then, not sure yet what that will being. Getting used to life on the farm like in the 1800s.

Working from home since Friday before last. Being in technology it's not a problem for the most part but I am not used to it. I'm used to be able to walk around the office and see my team and customers.

Yes!!  After being underemployed for the last few months, I've got a new project tomorrow. Working by myself , in an unoccupied house, about a mile away. I was worried the last few weeks...sometimes checks don't get signed to start work.
