Because he's converting to LB from safety.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:22 PM ^
I've wondered about Hawthorne, too. Bell is a RS freshman, so I'm not too worried that he hasn't seen meaningful action yet (even with the crappy LB play). I can't remember how much eligibility Hawthorne has remaining.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:30 PM ^
Hopefully now that we have some bodies in the defensive backfield those guys can settle into a natural position and start to really develop.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:43 PM ^
Wrong.
Brandin Hawthorne is a true sophomore.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
Somebody needs to edit the depth chart by class then.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:54 PM ^
Your wrong is wrong.
Hawthorne was granted a medical redshirt and is a redshirt freshman this year.

To all of you MGoBlog elderly, has there ever been a post correcting a previous post that was correcting a previous post that was correcting a previous post (three times removed)? I'm looking to start an MGoRecordbook . . .
P.S. jtmc33 - The Class of '97 rocked. We got to see some of the greatest players in Michigan football history! Woodson, Wheatley, Biakabatuka, Brady, Griese, Toomer, etc.

douche.

Because not every recruit pans out in a timeline that fans want
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:27 PM ^
a DE? Dude bulked up like crazy.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:28 PM ^
he probably sucks. but on a side note, fan expectations of our young players are out of control. it was only a few years ago that we expected the main contributors on our team to almost certainly be 5th years, true seniors and juniors because, well, they were the only contributors but now we cling onto the freshmen and sophomores to perform wonders immediately (hello rivals/scout).
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:33 PM ^
Plus a lack of said seniors and juniors at some positions.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:41 PM ^
It hasn't happened in this thread, but I absolutely love when people yell "bust" about RS freshman and sophomores.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:30 PM ^
People do set expectations too high, but it's partly due to being used to having the skillful 5th years/true seniors/juniors that you mentioned in the spots that young guys are now filling. Also, people just want to be winning again.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:47 PM ^
he probably sucks
dude, wtf?
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:56 PM ^
....I believe, based on the rest of the post
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:55 PM ^
I could be wrong, but I think you need to turn up your sarcasm detector.
September 23rd, 2010 at 1:23 PM ^
Canadians don't have sarcasm detectors.

Canadians have passive-aggressive sarcasm detectors.

Just speculation, but methinks that a significant portion of this weight is Gittleson-whole-pizza-at-2AM weight as opposed to Barwis-wolf-man-death-machine weight. I mean, sometimes players who haven't yet gone through a real strength program can experience outrageous gains once they actually do, but i mean come on... 205 to 245 after two summers? That sounds crazy to me. Even if that weight is legit, he is still a RSF and I think you're grasping for straws wondering why he isn't playing. He probably just isn't good enough yet.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:18 PM ^
it isn't good bulk
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:21 PM ^
Looks pretty solid to me...Maybe my eyes are tricking me. Ahh I'm getting too old for this.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:26 PM ^
see any fat bulk hanging out anywhere. What are you talking about? Just because he doesn't have a Marvin Robinson body going on doesn't mean his weight isn't muscle.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:34 PM ^
I don't trust you as much anymore, because he looks fine to me.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:41 PM ^
On Mgoblue it says that Hawthorne is a true sophomore. If he did get the medical redshirt, wouldn't it announce it.
September 23rd, 2010 at 12:46 AM ^
I think we should just blitz the house 1 out of every three plays. Get crazy. Try something to get them playing downhill, instead of just letting the other team dictate what is going on. We can't cover anyone and we can't stop the run. It seems like they should just either blitz like hell, or play a 4-3 cover 2 man and run up and make tackles. This 3-3-5 crap is giving me a headache...

no one has a real answer on Bell, then?
September 23rd, 2010 at 8:14 AM ^
Bell bulked up very quickly. He was moving from FS (in high school) to MIKE (in a 4-3 defense) to MIKE (in a 3-3-5 defense). He's only a redshirt freshman, and the guys ahead of him are a redshirt junior, a redshirt sophomore, and a true junior. Nothing happened to him. He's just not good enough to play yet.
September 24th, 2010 at 12:42 PM ^
was one of the players RR referred to as not being "All In" for summer workouts and conditioning
September 24th, 2010 at 8:05 PM ^
That's a bummer, because he's really athletic, and if he could stay in good shape with most of that bulk, he could be a very good LB. Eh, he's only a freshman, hopefully by his sophomore year he can get on the field.
September 23rd, 2010 at 8:00 AM ^
excuse the slight digression but isn't big will campbell gonna be a junior next year yet currently third string?
September 24th, 2010 at 6:58 PM ^
In other words, he's a sophomore.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:28 AM ^
One of these guys (Bell, Demens, etc) has got to be more aggressive in attacking the rush/blockers than Ezeh right?? Most of the time Ezeh just stands there until he is being blocked. If nobody can beat out Ezeh right now, our future at this position is not lookin so hot unless a freshman or recruit (Ryan, Jones) is gonna be a beast.
September 23rd, 2010 at 9:36 AM ^
Wow, what a unique idea.
September 23rd, 2010 at 10:08 AM ^
Our defense needs some unique ideas.
September 23rd, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
I was wondering the same thing. Where's he been? It would be nice to see him get some snaps against BG.
