What Is Your Favorite Michigan Marching Band Song (not including The Victors)?
Mates,
Of at least some relevance to football is our glorious marching band. On the way home I was hunting for music and played 'Hawaiian War Chant' at a rather loud level - always good when driving an old diesel truck. I submit that is probably my favorite MMB song outside of the obvious choice of 'The Victors'.
So what is your favorite song you like to hear the band play on Saturdays at the Big House?
Varsity.
Let's Go Blue
The "White Gloves" Cheer
Only because those three being played means good things are happening for blue.

I'm a former member of the MMB and I can't recall the "White Gloves" cheer. Which one was that?
Let's Go Blue
Sousaphone player in MMB and Hockey Band, wrote "Let's Go Blue" around 1976 and had the foresight to copyright it. I understand he is still receives payments from it because of all the airplay it gets.
Also, get rid of the third down song.
Temptation is one of my favorites. I'm talking about the song they play prior to 3rd down to get the crowd excited or whatever. The song isn't that great and the band and students arent really on the same page with it. I don't know what it's called so i can't really explain it past that.
It's called 'Intimidation', it started during the Rich Rod years, I believe in 2008.
Especially while doing the Cake Formation

Being an asthmatic tuba player meant pain at the end of that song, and you just gave me flashbacks.
Temptation. It means our defense is still a monster.
...but one performance - if I can frame it like this rather than a song per se - that always stood out to me is the tribute to Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland that was part of halftime for the Michigan-ND game in 1991. Of course, more people may remember that one for Desmond's catch - it was a muscially and aesthetically pleasant game overall.
Was there. Concur. Big Copland and West Side Story fan.
In terms of songs instead of performances, I always appreciated the Bullwinkle interludes.
That was unexpected. I was actually in that show. Pretty cool that you guys actually remember it!
I actually sing it at the games and everybody looks at me like I'm an alien.
No fucks were given on my part

great song, no true michigan fan should look askance at you.
in sec 20, maybe row 20? I sing it as well and there is someone behind me that sings it. Everyone looks at me like I am crazy as if they have nver heard that song before in their life.

In the Cake Formation. God, I love it when that Block M pops up in the middle of the cake.
my kids don't know those words and i'm not in a hurry to teach them. well, some of the older kids know them by now but they aren't used in our house (or barn).

I think the "You Suck" is never going to go away now.
I admit, I laughed the first time I heard it in 2006 but it quickly became stale. And it wasn't long before the program took it's nose dive to hell and WE were the ones sucking.
a few years ago, the one when we should have lost; everyone in my section was singing "WE SUCK". I hated to hear it but it was true.
...the "You Suck" has been downright embarrassing the last few seasons.
And of course In The Big House!

The Blues Brothers (in the cake formation, obviously), followed very closely by the combination of Temptation and the Hawaiin War Chant.
Varsity! Down the field!
Never yield, raise high your shield!
March onto victory for MEEECHEEEGAN!
And-the-maize-and-blue-oh
Varsity! We're for you!
Here for you to cheer for you!
We have no fear for you,
OH VAAARSIIIITYYYY!
I sing that proudly before every game and am usually the only person in my section that knows the words.
For you M history buffs- where did Michigan get its current arrangement of Temptation? I realize it is a 1930's Bing Crosby song but I'm wondering how they started playing it and who wrote their version? I don't know the answer I'm truly curious.
It was used as part of a halftime show back in the 1950s. The arrangement was/is by Jerry Bilik. Jerry was a music student in the early 50s. He composed "M Fanfare," and arranged "Temptation" and "Hawaiian War Chant." 'Hawaiian War Chant" was another percussion feature from a subsequent halftime show. The MMB began performing them together as encores in the early 1960s.
