What is Your Favorite Christmas Song and Movie/Special?

Submitted by xtramelanin on December 24th, 2019 at 8:28 PM

Mates,

The family is picking out a Christmas movie/special to watch tonight and we are letting the kids choose.  That said, us adults have our favorites.  For the older crowd some will like the original 'Its a Wonderful Life' with Jimmy Stewart and White Christmas with Bing Crosby.  Others might like the 1964 version of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.  Some of the slightly newer offerings are Charlie Brown's Christmas, the original Grinch, Scrooged, The Santa Clause, and Home Alone.  And of course the action flicks like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard that some classify as Christmas movies.

And then there are the songs.  Some we all probably hate (anybody that actually likes 'Santa Baby' probably has some deeper issues), but many that most folks love like Silent Night, White Christmas, and many others.

So this Christmas Eve Night Questions are simple:

1.  What is your favorite Christmas type of movie or special?

2.  What is your favorite Christmas song?

Wishing you all a truly Merry Christmas, and for those that attribute religious significance to it, that the holiday is fulfilling and enjoyable.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan

Hannukah Blessings by Barenaked Ladies (I'm not Jewish but this is a shout out to my Jewish friends).  I learned the entire Baruch Atah Adonai blessing listening to this song.

Movie: A Christmas Story

Too many good xmas songs to name a favorite. Same thing with xmas movies. I watched Jingle All The Way last night. Classic. Watched The Santa Clause a couple of weeks ago, which is another good one. Home Alone comes to mind.

Jingle all the way.  Sinbad v. Ahnold in the quest for the impossible to find Turbo Man.  the late great Phil Hartman as the neighbor who creeps on Arnold’s wife, greatness.

Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, A Christmas Story, Elf...  Plenty of great movies to choose from.  Musically, I like the big voices that have complete control of the songs.  Linda Eder has a great rendition of Do You Hear What I Hear - one of my favorites to listen to.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Bing Crosby, Pentatonix, August Burns Red, Mannheim Steamroller, Barenaked Ladies. All of those versions are great. I also really like Coventry Carol by Pentatonix such a haunting song, but very well done.

A Christmas Story is my fav movie. I’m sure I use a quote from that movie almost daily.

Merry Christmas all!

In the last 24 hours we have watched Home Alone, Elf, It's A Wonderful Life and now Christmas Vacation. Love them all.

As for songs, Silent Night is sticking with me this year. Just returned from Germany and Austria and the origins of the song trace to the Salzburg area. I do love For King and Country's version of Little Drummer Boy, but my 9 year old tends to overplay it.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I lean towards those 80s Manheim Steamroller albums...straight fire emojii as far as Xmas music is concerned (as the kids would say...or not).  Fond memories growing up listening to them; was shocked when, in the 90s, I learned they made music that wasn't Xmas music!  Also, and this comes from my Dad as I think they listened to him growing up but we did as well, but Johnny Mathis can sing a friggin' Christmas song!

Christmas Vacation

O Holy Night.  Specifically the John William's version from the movie home alone.  I know it sou ds stupid to say that, but the harmonies in that kids choir is amazing and he is a brilliant composer.  Look it up on Youtube.

1. Every Christmas Eve, we always binge watch the Grinch (Jim Carrey and Karloff versions), Charlie Brown Christmas, Home Alone, Natl. Lampoons Christmas, Elf, Christmas with the Kranks, then finish the evening with A Christmas Story.

2.  Oh Holy Night.  Always get goose bumps.

Christmas Vacation or Home Alone. Sleeper pick would be Surviving Christmas. James Gandolfini is absolutely perfect in his role.

Song I've been really into this year is All I Want for Christmas (Hi Mariah). Bing, Dean and Francis Albert are always in heavy rotation though.

Christmas Vacation and Die Hard, like my children I can't say I like one more than the other.

Older Christmas song- "Home for the Holidays" - Perry Como

Newer Christmas Song- "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" - TSO

Movie is the 1951 version of "A Christmas Carol" with Alistair Sim.

Special is "A Charlie Brown Christmas" by a nose over the original "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Songs are too many, but I'll always have a soft spot for Karen Carpenter's "Merry Christmas Darling." That woman had a voice that would have been a great match for the Big Bands of the 40's.

Song: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" -- it's a wonderful tune, and the lyrics have quite a bit of meaning.  Plus it always choked me up when they broke into this hymn at the end of the Charlie Brown Christmas special.

Movie: It's hard to beat "It's a Wonderful Life."  Several reasons: (1) I am, at heart, a sentimental sap, and I love that sort of movie; and (2) Donna Reed. :-)

It occurs to me they sing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" at the end of "It's a Wonderful Life."

Movie/Special: Original Grinch, A Christmas Carol (I like the George C. Scott version but the Guy Pierce version, on FX this year, was very good, too), A Christmas Story.

Song: Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses (although, there are lots of classics that I heard while growing up in the mid-60s. Sleigh Ride is one of those).

Favorite movie/TV: A Charlie Brown Christmas. From the melancholy of “Christmastime is Here” to the joyful irreverence of the dancing kids to Linus’s groundbreaking soliloquy, it’s a true classic.

Favorite songs: This Christmas by Donny Hathaway and Another Christmas Song by Stephen Colbert.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

As for Christmas movies, the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol takes me back to the days in my youth (the 1950s) when it was repeated frequently on a local TV station, leading up to the holiday.  Despite not having seen It’s A Wonderful Life until somewhat late in my own life, it’s another one that I enjoy at any time of the year.

On the Christmas movie comedy list, Home Alone and Christmas Vacation are my favorites. Despite all the negative reviews, I was surprised at how much I liked Office Christmas Party (and for those fans of HBO’s Silicon Valley, it’s a chance to see T. J. Miller pretty much playing his Erlich Bachman character again, but with a different name.)

Although I’m a non-Christian, raised in an earlier monotheistic faith that’s celebrating another holiday at this time of year, but more secular humanist at heart and more likely to be worshiping at the Temple of Rock ‘n’ Roll than at any other house of worship, I’ve always liked a lot of the Christmas music, some of which takes me back to my high school years in the early sixties when many of us athletes weren’t ashamed to be singing on stage with the school choir or singing Christmas carols for patients at local hospitals.

Years ago, I added a Christmas music playlist to my computer just for days like today (some are obscure; many of them still may be found on YouTube):

White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes; Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy - Bing Crosby and David Bowie; I Believe in Father Christmas - Emerson, Lake & Palmer; Do They Know It’s Christmas - Band Aid; Happy XMas (War Is Over) - John Lennon; The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You) - Nat King Cole; I Wish You A Merry Christmas - Bing Crosby; You Make It Feel Like Christmas - Neil Diamond; Please Come Home for Christmas - Eagles; Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) - Death Cab for Cutie; The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) - Alvin and the Chipmunks; Winter Wonderland - Darlene Love; Sleigh Ride - The Ronettes; Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - The Crystals; Merry Christmas Baby - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band; Christmas Time All Over The World - The Smithereens; Step Into Christmas - Elton John; Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree - Darlene Love and Ronnie Spector; Your Holiday Song - Indigo Girls; The Christmas Song - The Raveonettes; Together at Christmas - moe.; Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses; Elf’s Lament - Barenaked Ladies with Michael Bublé; The 12 Days of Christmas - Straight No Chaser; White Christmas - Darlene Love; Ain’t Nothin’ Like Christmas - Shelby Lynne; Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) - U2; Candy Cane Christmas - Darius Rucker; Take A Break Guys (jazz take on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) - Brian Setzer Orchestra

A Christmas Carol. Dickens simply nailed the spirit(s) of Christmas.

I also like The Nutcracker music. And the ballet is quite nice, if you’re in the mood.

I like those two for their purity and timelessness.

And Christmas Vacation, Home Alone and A Christmas Story, for more contemporary fare.
