At What Point Does Warde’s Brand Taint Santa’s?

Need a distraction for an unpleasantly not slow news day. And FYI, this is not meant to be a Warde bashing post…

How long before Warde’s increasingly toxic brand begin to spoil the Wolverine sports fan good will for Santa Ono? And what would it take to get there?

We're entering the tail is wagging the dog territory. Athletics is a $215M revenue operation. The University of Michigan had operating revenues of $10.9B in 2023. $7.2B of that is related to UM Health. Viewed under that lens, the University is a hospital with a few colleges and some sports teams attached to it.

We all love UofM athletics, but for someone like Santa Ono, it's 2 pennies on the dollar. If he spends more than an hour a week on the athletic department, that's too much.

I doubt that Burt Ward will ever taint Santa. Santa is on another level, bringing lots of gifts for the kids. They love him like no one else ever.

Get a grip. Michigan football just won a national championship. Santa was vocal in supporting Jimmy all through the sign stealing stuff, the NCAA investigation, NFL interviews last offseason. That is unprecedented for a UofM president.

I couldn't care less about Ono, but he needs to take action and fire Manuel today!  Harbaugh never respected Manuel and could barely stomach talking to him.  Manuel had over two years to sign Harbaugh to a lifetime contract and he couldn't be bothered to get off his fat ass and take action.  Now we are stuck in a place where we have to cobble together a team and coaching staff and have absolutely no momentum from an incredible national championship run.

You should start another post and state that the post is not meant to be political, and then follow with asking "who's better at politics Democrats or Republicans?"

I just don't understand all of the dissatisfaction on this board when it comes to Warde Manuel.

How many of the complainers have experience running a large multi million dollar big business?

OK... So Bakich left to coach a southern school baseball team and Harbaugh left to chase a Super Bowl championship. Each is understandable and nobody's fault.

Mel? Some complain that the process took too long, but the guy was entitled to a fair process, especially as he had no history of problems in the past as a HC or here as a long time assistant.

Basketball? Who thought, at the time of the hire that Juwan would struggle? Seemed everyone looked forward to big time recruits coming in rather than JB's type of recruit.

Then there's the issue of the portal ... like Manuel has any control of the undergraduate admissions/credit transfer process...

As for NIL and player payments ... While I agree with the transformational and not transactional approach favored by WM and Harbaugh, many here seem to disagree. Regardless, it's silly to think that Manuel can change that with a magic wand should he choose to do so. That would have to come down from the Regents and President Ono.

Different era, Warde might be just fine as an AD.  I liken him to a barge that just floats down a big, broad river that has no obstacles; almost always seems to be just going with the flow and moves only in response to forces being applied from the outside.  Barge has a lot of heft and direction and will ultimately get to where it needs to be.  Normal times, this is probably OK for Michigan.  But these are not normal times; there are lots of obstacles to avoid and opportunities to be had, and he seems constitutionally unsuited to those types of challenges.  As an example, it seems Howard will be around here until some external force pushes him out.  Not saying Warde should be dumping on Howard publicly, but he also shouldn't say "stay calm, everything is just fine" when it's crystal-clear to even a casual observer that almost nothing about that program is "fine."

Warde kept Harbaugh in 2020, and he went on to win Michigan a coveted national title.  Warde was a part of that; good for him.  Maybe sit down on that achievement and turn this over to someone who can take more initiative and help the school chart a course that makes sense.
