What's all this lying around ____??

Have you forgotten 1969?

How about 1993?

How about 1995?

Even the youngest among us should remember 1996

An undefeated, overconfident OSU team has played Michigan before. I'm with Wolverine1987 (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/112613-day-mgoemo-cratered) Stop whining. Stop with the doom and gloom. Go Blue. Beat Ohio.

You're probably right, because it is 2013, and literally not any of those years. Unless you're into that whole space time continuum thingy where time is a figment of our imagination, and all things at all times are happening at once or something. Then it might be one of those years.

But I am sure people said this isn't 1969 in 1993, 1995, or 1996.

While we have the ball.....in our own stadium. Ohio is gonna invade Ann Arbor and they'll be loud. One would think the game is at a neutral site.

I wish more and more people, specially the people running this program, get out of the 90s and be innovative like we were in the past.  it seems like we stopped progressing in the 90s and continue living in our past glory.  No one asks why were we so successful in the past, and try to repeat it so we continue being top notch program in the country.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm living in the future. None of my optimism is based on past games. I don't even remember those games. I just know that the universe is weird sometimes and assumptions, even those based on solid evidence, don't always hold true. And I know that sometimes things fall your way just enough to influence an outcome.

It will be on the same magnitude as the '69 upset. The '69 defense improved through the season and it was the exceptional play of the defense that won that game. We have a good defense but OSU plays the spread. But you never know!

The '96 team was talented but I enjoyed the upset of number 1 OSU. Again our defense was playing well.

I think that team was much tougher.  This year's team, so far, hasn't shown the ability to play at  the level of a team like OSU.  Not even close.  Still, if Ohio comes in supremely overconfident, Devin has his best game of the year, Michigan's D plays all-out for 4 quarters, there's a snowstorm on Saturday, ........

Hopefully Kalis follows through with his promise of blood on the field.

Did anyone else catch Kalis totally pancake that dude Schofield was blocking last week? I want to say it was on the Gallon TD play? It was when we were in the Redzone one of two times. Anyways, that kid has a mean streak, hopefully he can knock some buckeyes around.

The 1969 team was 8-3

In 1993 they were 8-4 (which means they were 7-4 heading into The Game...)

1995 - 9-4 (8-3 heading into The Game)

1996 - 8-4 (7-3 heading into The Game)

Michigan has done this before. They can do it again.

It was a huge upset, OSU was heavily favored and many considered them the best team in college football. If we were to upset OSU it would be similar to the '69 achievement. OSU's a good team in a weak conference. I don't think OSU would hold up well playing Alabama or FSU! So, they're not like the totally dominate '69 Buckeyes but Michigan is probably not at the same level of the '69 Wolverines.

This is the thing that many people don't realize. Those teams in the 90s were pretty good and the 2013 team just isn't. Defensively we are above average to good, but not good enough to stop that Ohio offense. Braxton is going to make our defense look silly and if he gets injured, Guitton will do the same thing. Offensively for Michigan? Well, we all know how the season has gone this year on that side of the ball.

As a basis for comparison.  Those teams went 8-3, 7-4, 8-3, 7-3 against REAL opponents.  Michigan this year has faced a glorified MAC schedule and nearly lost to UConn and Akron.  Comparing this year's record to those year's records is a serious insult to some pretty damn good teams that probably would be 11-0 heading into the game if they played in the B1G in 2013.

1993 looks similar to this year... lost 3 close ones and got somewhat handled by Michigan State...

September 11, 1993 12:00 PM #11/10 Notre Dame* #3/2 Michigan Stadium • Ann Arbor, MI (Rivalry) ABC L 23–27
October 9, 1993 3:30 PM at Michigan State #9/10 Spartan Stadium • East Lansing, MI (Paul Bunyan Trophy) ABC L 7–17
October 23, 1993 3:30 PM Illinoisdagger #13/14 Michigan Stadium • Ann Arbor, MI ABC L 21–24
October 30, 1993 12:30 PM at #21/20 Wisconsin #24/23 Camp Randall Stadium • Madison, WI ESPN L 10–13

So by comparison, the ND loss was Penn State (close), Sparty was still Sparty, Illinois=Iowa (exact same score), WIsconsin=Nebraska (low scoring affair)... maybe this team is similar to '93, not as good, but similar schedule... maybe all hope is not lost...

November 20, 1993 12:00 PM #5/5 Ohio State   Michigan Stadium • Ann Arbor, MI (The Game) ABC W 28–0

1993 Notre Dame =/= 2013 Penn State.  Did Notre Dame have essentially half a team and were unranked?  No.  At the time they were ranked 10th in the country.

1993 Wisconsin was superior to a 2013 Nebraska playing with its backup qb.

Also, which teams in 1993 were analagous to Akron and UConn?

Notre Dame and Wisconsin finished #2 and #5 in the final Coaches Poll, respectively.

Michigan finished #19 after winning a New Year's Bowl 42-7.

Side note, that Michigan coaching staff was something.  Assistants included Lloyd Carr, Cam Cameron, Les Miles, Jim Herrman, and Greg Mattison.

I think it comes down to our offense. I've been rotting with the flu today so I looked back at some rankings for those years.

1993:                    UM         OSU      UM +/-

Total Offense -      38            45          7

Rushing -              40            37         -3

Passing -              40            52          8

Scoring -               35            30          5

Total Defense -     22             9          -13

T/O Margin -         28:24        20:15

Final Score - UM 28 OSU 0

Notable Stat - OSU 4 INTs in 1st half

1995:                    UM         OSU      UM +/-

Total Offense -      33            5            -28

Rushing -              21            14          -7

Passing -              64            15          -49

Scoring -               45             6           -39

Total Defense -     11             32          21

T/O Margin -         29:24        31:20

Final Score - UM 31 OSU 23

Notable Stats

Biakabutuka 313 yards

OSU held to 106 rushing yards, 392 total yards

"I've been playing football for six years, including high school, and I've never seen holes like that," Biakabutka said. "Any one of you guys could have run through them."

1996:                    UM         OSU      UM +/-

Total Offense -      48            16         -32

Rushing -              17             9          -8

Passing -             >50            46          ? (rankings up to 50, too lazy to research)

Scoring -              >50             6          ? (same idea)

Total Defense -      18             6          -12

T/O Margin -         23:22       30:16

Final Score - UM 13 OSU 9

Notable Stats

OSU offense falters in 2nd half

Griese takes over 2nd half and leads UM from 9-0 deficit

I know stats don't mean everything, especially when it comes to The Game. But we can't ignore our inefficiency and pretend our issues this year can be ignored.

For 2013, the only glaring difference in the statistics I saw were in the offense. OSUs offense ranks 6th while Michigan ranks 94th. The quote from Biakabutuka captures the point I guess I'm trying to make. Our line doesn't give us a favorable edge in this game. Our run game is ranked 100th and I was too bummed to look up our passing offense but I can only assume it's nothing spectacular.

I guess another stat I could have looked up was sacks allowed for those previous games. For this year, we have 32 sacks allowed compared to OSUs 13 and they have so far reached the QB 36 times this year (another disappointing stat is we have given up 244 yards on all those sacks). Our offensive line is young or inexperienced or both (minus Schofield and Lewan). But I think another issue may be Gardner and his progression and when a play becomes broken and how Gardner responds to defensive pressure. This allows defenses to confidently stuff the box, shut down the run game and force Gardner to respond to the pressure. I'll probably rewatch the Iowa game later and see if there is a pattern of error in Gardner's progression.

This calls for a really feudal and stupid gesture on somebody's part.  ...and we're just the guys to do it.

This season has been a tire fire, but g-d damn it, F OSU.   This is just what I needed.  Thanks JeepinBen!
