Webb Crystal Ball to LB Deuce Spurlock

Submitted by jbibiza on September 24th, 2021 at 1:39 PM

Deuce is on a visit this weekend and Sam just put in a CB with high probability.
Great name and also a very good LB prospect who should fit well in the Macdonald system.
Will put highlight linkin comment below as it will not take here.

Your link to his profile page is hyperlinked wrong. This gets you where you want to go: https://247sports.com/Player/Deuce-Spurlock-46101976/

Also, can you explain why you referred to him as a very good LB prospect? I'm not saying he isn't, but the profile doesn't support that. Kind of a low 3-star, and his best offer is from ... Mississippi State? South Carolina? Maybe there's been some noise about him being under estimated, like we sometimes here for other recruits?

Mason Graham was a low 3 star when he committed to Michigan from Boise State, now USC offered and his rating shot up to borderline 4 star.

Edit:

Deuce's P5 offers include:

Boston College (Jeff Hafley)

Pitt (Narduzzi)

Syracuse

South Carolina

Mississippi State (I recall a lot of people on here wanted to hire Zach Arnett to replace Brown while he was still at SDSU)

Looks like he has offers from Army and Vanderbilt.   I'm assuming this guy is underrated, but he's also a smart kid.  Smart doesn't always translate to football smart, but it beats being a knucklehead.  I've know a few guys with NFL size and speed who didn't make it through college because they had rocks for brains.  One dude was 6'9" 300 pounds and ran a 4.8 40.  I saw him bench 300+ pounds 15-20 reps.  He threw the shot almost 60'. He got kicked off our HS team his senior year for discipline issues. He got kicked off of two Big Ten teams and one MAC team for disciplinary issues as well.  Crying shame.

It's good to have smart dudes on your team.

I don't think you need to defend the offer here, BUT there is a reason we were chasing a few others before him - The kid from Chicago, the kid from TX etc.

I think this young man has some nice upside - and if you are going to take an upside kid its not bad to do it in an area you want to grow recruiting. i.e. Spurlock in AL, Alexander at Belleville

Side note on the LB from TX mentioned above (Jeremy Patton - looked it up..)  Was listening to the Rivals recruiting podcast and EJ Holland said that the rumor was that Patton had recently reached out to both Texas and M for a possible flip from Baylor.  It seems M is no longer interested -- don't blame them when the kid was apparently a silent to M, UT, and Baylor at the same time before he announced for Baylor.  I actually think his "silent" was what caused M to slow down their pursuit of Deuce in the first place.

Thanks for correcting the link. I tried to link both the 247 and Hudl pages but it would not take them, I guess when I tried to link Hudl it over-rode the 247 link.

As for his ratings: We all know that stars are more meaningless this year than ever before due to covid. The staff had this kid at a camp; looked him over; worked him out; liked what they saw.
They liked Jeremy Patton, a very similar player, a tad better. Jeremy was a silent commit, but his mom told him to stay home so he committed to Baylor.

Raw talent like Kevontae Henry and Aaron Alexander. Spurlock has all the physical gifts needed to be a phenomenal player in this defense. Quickness at the point of attack, down hill from the snap, speed, good frame to support SnC, likes to hit and is good at it. He is a good LB prospect. Literally. He needs plenty of work that a kid like him would hope to get in college. He's not beyond his age in mentality or technique or anything like that. He is good and needs coaching and thus is a good LB prospect, but not in the same way that Walter Nolen is a "good DL prospect" or Travis Hunter is a "good DB prospect"

The 247 recruiting guys spoke at decent length on him on the pod the released today.

Brief highlights:

Steve still has a CB on him from before. Steve believes Michigan to have been very high on him, but it was a matter of whether or not Lander Barton would work out. It looks like now they're ready for him.

However, the question is now, whether or not Spurlock is ready for Michigan. He was ready to go earlier, grandma had a winter jacket ready.

Steve - Not going to take off his CB, but maybe there will be some luck if the ball works out.

Brice - They've seen him in person, worked him out, esp. with the new defensive staff they know he is what he is.  Michigan looks good for him. Plus athlete. Better than ranking, like Dent. And a kid they can't pass up on.

Sam - Lander Barton for them was a guy they take whenever (regardless of what the rankings say). Esp based on the post visit vibe, and the team feels good. Sam is still skeptical,Utah kid with strong Utah ties. In the end, Michigan doesn't want to be left holding the bag without a LB who can't contribute soon, like Spurlock.

Steve - Confirms Barton as their #1 who they would find room for. Junior and NHG's development may mean that LB isn't as dire as it once appeared, and 2023 has a ton of elite LBs in it.

Appears to be a deep sleeper to the recruiting sites. Looks like his other P5 suitors consist of lower-level to meddling programs: BC, Miss St., Syracuse, Pitt., Washington St. etc.

For those with scouting chops on the board, does his film look like that of an under-recruited prospect, or is this a reach on Michigan's part?

I mean, he looks better than you’d expect of a kid ranked #1274 in the composite. I wouldn’t say he looks like he’s going to be an All-American either though. So it depends on your definition of “reach.”

Looks like he’s a very solid football player, one that you’d typically see ranked as a high three star. Not a “star” by any means but a solid contributor and late career starter.

At first i didn't like this due to his offers sheet. Then i watched film... He's a demon. Watch him chuck himself coming around the edge at the runner.  Like this.

This though means that Barton ain't coming.  And we need a big LB inside.

I'll say it again, i love this new staff. What sucks is that MacDonald won't be here more than two years, and by the time these players play. NFL will be coming after him... Maybe college head coach too.

Awesome name.  Looks athletic, great jumping ability and good tackler on film.  Come help make it a full house for every home game Deuce and Go Blue !

He's a plan A...we were the ones to reinitiate.

We need 2-3 ILBs in this class, depth wise, Hill-Green and Colston look like the future starters but we haven't see anyone outside of Mullings that looks like a 2-deep player.

Hood got in during the last game, but that's not saying much.

All of those VIPERs, Barrett, Solomon, Velazquez, etc. seem like men without a home at the moment.

Plan A after all of the other plans didn’t work out… yeah, we know what you’re saying. But that’s not how “Plan A” works. He’s a backup plan to the backup plans. The ones in front of him didn’t come. So we’re on to him now. That doesn’t make him plan A.

Doesn’t mean he’s a bad player or that he isn’t a take now. Simply that if Michigan had gotten the guys it wanted before, he wouldn’t even be on the radar. The only reason he IS on the radar, is because Michigan struck out on guys it wanted before. He’s not a plan A.

If he never sees the field as a LB, he could be a special teams demon. Fast and aggressive. Hey, you need those players too, right? Need to hit the position hard next year in recruitng, Mr. Helow. Losing Burnham hurt.

Look, I’m never one to worship Harbaugh, and I don’t deify our staff when they make blockhead decisions. That being said, Harbaugh and co have absolutely beat up on the recruiting sites as well as a lot of the other schools when it comes to talent evaluation, not once, but at least five years or so. So don’t take this as one of those “all our two stars are really five stars”, but right now, I’d recommend giving more credit to Harbaugh and his guys than to a web site. Unless you go to TMZ for all your other news.

I’ll also, just for the sake of it, reiterate what some others have referred to; during the lockdown year, the sites were especially weak, seeing far fewer players in person.

Last, and certainly least, in the few clips we got to see, he showed great potential. I don’t know if I’m going to say that he’s a great athlete or football player, but I’m personally drawn to the guys that play a physical game and try to knock people out of their cleats.

Maybe a Ross type, I really really hope. But the great thing is, we always get to find these things out, sooner or later.

Also, no need to whine about Velasquez or Barrett types. We had a DC who wanted those body types. He’s gone. But it’s certainly possible that if UM was more of a viper type D, those guys would be excelling in that role. But we’ll never know. Them’s the breaks.

I will attempt. The staff has generally proven to be great talent evaluators and earned some level of trust in these matters.

I tend to agree but every year there seems to be a position or two where we lose out on most of our priority targets. Last year it was safety this year it is ILB and safety.

At LB we are taking some high upside prospect and we have Colson, Hill-Green, and Mullings so there is time.

Safety is feeling like a concern. Moten, Paige, and Moore look legit but three safeties is not enough. Missing out two years in a row is the type of error that kills us in the past.
