Washington Post article on Nike's version of Michigan maize

Submitted by Ghost of Fritz… on

The Washington Post has a brief article today on the version of maize that Nike will bring (or bring back) to Michigan.

Title: "Farewell, maize: Nike introduces a brand-new shade of yellow to Michigan."

Link:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2016/07/20/farewell-m…

EDIT:  The first commenter (not me, I swear) to the WaPo article: "It's not maize."

So the debate continues...

Jumpman is so much more than a basketball logo. Nike started out as a track and field company/logo and adidas started out as a soccer company and logo. Even UA started out as a football company and now they are big in hoops and everything else.

Jumpman has outfitted top players in basketball, football and baseball for many years. Jeter, Woodson, just to name a couple of Michigan guys.

unW - what's your 40 time? Shuttle? Whatchu benching these days? If your answer to these isn't 4.5, 4.62, 475 lbs, then we're not all that concerned about what YOU think about Jumpman... If, otoh, you DO check these boxes - I'm verrry interested in how you feel the Swoosh & Jumpman can be better incorporated with the Block M....

Look, I get that jump man is not just a basketball thing. My gripe is that we have a logo of a man literally playing basketball on our football jerseys. It is just weird. Recruits love it, and that's fine. I'm all for it if it helps us win games. But that still doesn't change the fact that there is a man playing another sport on our football jerseys.

Neg away if you want, but seeing the jumpman logo on our gear doesn't feel like a fit. I'm not going to picket outside Michigan Stadium out anything. And I'm for it if recruits like it, but it looks wrong to me.

think that some people, perhaps you included, associate the Jumpman with basketball only when, in fact, the transition to football will be the first move in what will likely become a comprehensive line of sports clothing and equipment.  There was a time when it was comical to think of a Nike swoosh on a golf ball or a Puma on a golf glove.  Before long, tennis players have Jumpman rackets and golfers will have the logo on their hat.  I think that the Jumpman line will become a trend setting brand and that we are getting in at exactly the right time.

As a Pistons/Bad Boys fan, it is anathama to see Jordan on a Michigan jersey.  He was a great player, but he wasn't my great player.  ...and he travelled and got crazy favorable calls.    If Jumpman helps us avoid getting kicked out of games for being pushed in the back then I'm all for it, but otherwise yuck!  (and if recruits like it.)

transended rivalry.  Aside from Muhammad Ali and perhaps Pele' he is the most iconic athlete to ever live.  His logo denotes fierce competitiveness, unparalleled skill, and quite simply, winning.

The Bad Boys were great and I detested Jordan during that era for that reason, but come on man.  It is Michael F-ing Jordan.  His logo can go anywhere on my teams uniform.

can't be serious.  Hockey?  Hockey vs. NBA in its glory years.  Seriously, Hockey?  Well, I guess there are about 150 people strong in the country who agree with you at least you have some support.

point was made by you how a basketball logo on a football jersey is ok because it's Jordan, even if you were a Piston's fan back in the day.  Simply showing that some people may not agree.  Chose Crosby because Detroit doesn't exactly love the guy.

Some "opinions" are actually facts. Crosby hasn't achieved in his sport what Michael Jordan did in basketball, and he also hasn't surpassed Howe or Gretzy. It's not about disagreement in this case. Some of those are icons. Crosby is a star. There's a difference. He might reach that level, but he hasn't yet.

The Rolling Stones are icons. If somebody wants to make a Rolling Stones restaurant or a Rolling Stones line of beer, then that has nothing to do with music, but okay. On the other hand, if somebody wanted to make a Mumford & Sons or Tegan and Sara restaurant or beer, I would probably laugh.

Jordan is a brand at this point. It's not a guy. It's not a sport. It's Easton moving into the hockey equipment market. It's Amazon moving into the streaming video service. It's an expansion of a brand.

because pro rivalries matter as much as college rivalries. I hate the packers but I would wear Aaron Rodgers gear if it looked sweet. This pretty much goes with any pro team but I can't even imagine wearing anything from a buckeye..it's just not the same.

that Magic Johnson was both more iconic and the better basketball player;

If Magic, then, had his own clothing line, would you be OK with the Michigan Football team wearing his logo?

I'm sure there are plenty of idiots arguing lots of dumb things, does not make them true. But if Magic Johnson developed the brand Jordan did, then yes I would not have a problem wearing it. I hated Jordan as a kid and yet when his shoes became a thing, I had to have them. Everyone had to have them, there hasn't been a comparable brand in athletic gear since Jordan's brand came into existance.

Two guys I hated in those days because of not just our rivalry with them, but being honest, because of how much more popular and acclaimed they were than our guys: Jordan & Cal Ripken... After some time though, you just get over it, man! They were Fucking great players, icons in the very sense of the word. And, if recruits like it, I like it! Now if it turns out they DON'T? BURN the Fuckers!

The Bad Boys made Jordan. The beatings he took made him get stronger to compete. If there were no Bad Boys Jordan would be a just another great player.

Jordan brand cleats are already in Track, Soccer, Golf, Baseball and Football. Equipment used in Boxing and NASCAR. I think everyone needs to give it a year. If we win a national championship in Jordan brand uniforms, we will be bitching to switch back after an unsuccessful stint with Under Armor in 2035.

MJ was a iconic player, and Jumpman is an iconic brand. It's pretty cool Michigan gets to lead the pack in something that was so inevitable. People just hate new things. Especially Michigan fans. But at some point the Jordan brand was going to break into football and be one of the big players in the apparel market.

Nike is a track shoe company named after a Greek Goddess. Adidas is a Futbol outfitter. Puma track. Reebok track. Russell was womens and chilrens undergarments. Champion is owned by Hanes. And who wants to be outfitted by the same people who dress Notre Dame?

We can't just do everything recruits like or else we'd have a big Charzard on our jerseys. At the same time, forget about Jumpman being basketball or Jordan-related. It's a more exclusive division of Nike, that's all, and it's been trending that way for years.
