Warm Feelings Thread: Hypocrites or Genuinely Caring?

Submitted by MeanJoe07 on

This is long, but it's an important issue for those who are passionate fans

There STILL seems to be a lot of people on here, and in the news and around campus who are trying to make the argument that if Michigan was 5-0 we wouldnt be calling for Brady Hoke or Brandon to be fired and/or protesting. They think it's all about losses. As a Michigan student I don't think those who are reacting in this way are hypocritical. That's unfair. If all recent and past events were held constant (let's pretend this is possible) except Michigan was 5-0,  would  we still be upset over Brandon's/Hoke's decisions and errors over the past few years?  YES! Would we still have an organized protest and call for the immediate firing?  Of course not. "HAH I was right! Its all its all about the wins just like I said!"

Not so fast.  Look at it the other way around.  Lets keep our record the same, but remove the Morris incident, the numerous "failures in communication", the Gibbons incident, the Coke promo incident, the firework incident, the student ticket and pricing incident, the fireworks proposal, the giant noodle, the piped in rap music that muffles the band, being the 2nd slowest team in college football, no urgency to win in games etc.   Would we be upset about the poor record? Of Course, especially since this is Hoke's 4th year. What fanbase wouldnt be upset? Would we protest and call for the immediate firing of Hoke and Brandon? If all other things were going well (or not absolutely horrible) and we just had a poor record (let's pretend this is possible), of course not. We've come back from bad records to have decent seaons. So by these people's logic this wouldn't this mean records mean nothing!  Neither is true.

CLEARLY all that has happened is adding up. There are no positives to hang on to. The whole Morris Incident was the back breaking last straw. All these events impact the culture, morale, and trajectory of the season and football prgram.  You can't change one variable or two and create an argument on a hypothetical  situation that isnt reality and then claim others are hypocrites because they might not react how they are if that hypothetical win-loss record was true. One event affects another. In reality, events are linked and reactions are affected by how they are linked.  If you ignore every other event leading up to an event that people finally reacted strongly to that reaction will seem hypocritical because obviously.  That's not reality.  Students and fans really care about this program and, while the record is important, its more than two numbers seperated by a dash.  Its also about that amazing warm feeling you get down in your plums when you first walk into the stadium and all that comes after that moment.  Brandon and Hoke are damaging this.  Let's do our part to stop them.

When I began writing this post, I had the notion that I would write about something positive and optimistic instead of going on about how pusillanimous MeanJoe07 is. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of anything particularly positive to write about. So, instead, I'll just tell you that the only winners in MeanJoe07's games are ambulance services and funeral homes. Although not without overlap and simplification, I plan to identify three primary positions on MeanJoe07's utterances. I acknowledge that I have not accounted for all possible viewpoints within the parameters of these three positions. Nevertheless, MeanJoe07 is like a magician who produces a dove in one hand while the other hand is concealing information and, occasionally, blatantly lying. He asserts that he values our perspectives. Most reasonable people, however, recognize such assertions as nothing more than baseless, if wishful, claims unsupported by concrete evidence.

I must part company with many of my peers when it comes to understanding why it must be pointed out that MeanJoe07 should stop and savor life, not do away with intellectual honesty. My peers aver that only a fool or a liar would warrant that it's inappropriate to teach children right from wrong. While this is honestly true, I contend we must add that you should be sure to let me know your ideas about how to deal with him. I am eager to listen to your ideas and I indisputably hope that I can grasp their essentials, evaluate their potential, look for flaws, provide suggestions, absorb feedback, suggest improvements, and then put the ideas into effect. Only then can we detail the specific steps and objectives needed to thwart MeanJoe07's wretched schemes.

MeanJoe07 occasionally shows what appears to be warmth, joy, love, or compassion. You should realize, however, that these positive expressions are more feigned than experienced and invariably serve an ulterior motive, such as to diminish our will to live. I have a New Year's resolution for him: He should pick up a book before he jumps to the patronizing conclusion that big emotions come from big words. MeanJoe07's arguments are full of hair-splitting, lawyer-like quibbling and references to obscure authorities. Then again, that notion has been popular for as long as presenteeism has existed. As a final reminder, please don't let MeanJoe07's prevarications dissuade you from evaluating the tactics he has used against me. Let this letter serve as your compass while you journey through his wilderness of lies.

So those saying ... "folks are only angry at Hoke solely for injury issue(s) as a cover for their anger about the W-L record"?

Are actually the true hypocrites who WANT us to see Hoke on his W-L record.

So let's go there, let's examine Hoke's W-L record.

And when Hoke's W-L record is examined at the end of the year, I want those same folks who say "stay with Hoke" to truly stay with Hoke, shoulder to shoulder, as Hoke leaves the program with those same "stay with Hoke" fans.

I am happy to let the "Stay with Hoke" crowd stand and be numbered. Let's us know who can exit with Brady.

If there were no injuries but W-L record was the same = Yes, I would want Hoke replaced as HC, and want Brandon gone. If we were 5-0 and there were no injuries = I'd be cheering on Hoke, and I'd want Brandon gone. A friend of mine (IMO) perfectly summed up the football experience from a fan's perspective: "Pro fans cheer for the name on the back of the jersey; college fans cheer for the name on the front of it." And that's the bottom line. If you're asking me if I am concerned with the way injuries have been handled in this current program; of course, it's been disturbing and wrong, and I would still want it addressed and corrected immediately. But if you're asking me if my concern regarding Brandon is about the current students and players that will be gone in a few years, no. My concern is for the health of the program, because it's the name on the front of the jersey that has my love and commitment.

Brandon and Hoke would likely bruise the "plum"; what do you suggest? Protest, negative press to the program, light torches and brandish pitchforks? For the betterment of the program we need to see this tumultous time through without active protests UNLESS more silliness crops up. The regents, the president, have received our message of dissatisfaction; they are more aware of the state of the program then they were before. As fans and more, we in the stands and in front of the tele need to support the team and stop bringing up distractions that adversely affect the program. There is no way the players are not affected by it; hopefully it won't damage their resolve to improve. I also don't blame some of our recruits from wavering on their 'commitment' as it seems the program and school they are currently committed to is imploding.
