Warde Might Have Anticipated Beilein's Departure

Per the Freep, Manuel thought Beilein might be leaving if he received another NBA offer.

A source with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press on Monday that, after Beilein's talks with the Pistons last year, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel became convinced that Beilein would leave Michigan if/when he received another offer from a pro team.

Manuel, per the source, has had a short list of candidates ready since that time. Michigan athletic department leadership has started the process of examining future candidates, though no names have been made clear at this time.

Sure faked me out...I thought JB was serious when he said Michigan was where he was meant to stay.  Maybe Warde was more tuned in than we were.

As I said in an earlier post, I thought JB was somehow different last year...didn't seem as happy or intense, and I attributed that to his bypass surgery.  Perhaps he was looking for a change and we didn't recognize the signs.

Coach speak.  Has anyone who transitions ever tip their hand before it happens?

I sure hope so.  Most corporations have succession plans for their execs, why Michigan and Barnacle Bill didn't when Carr retired by way of comparison is baffling.  It's not being disloyal to the person to have a succession plan -- it's just good business.

Warde would be guilty of malfeasance if he didn't keep a short list. For all his revenue sports. Bill Martin's failure in that regard lead to 10 years of utter football mediocrity...at best.

Don Canham once said he kept a list of three names in his desk drawer in case Bo walked in one day and quit. And he would be in contact with all three within 24 hours and hire one within three days. But nobody will ever confuse cautious Warde Manual with aggressive Don Canham.

I am usually very against personal criticism of college athletes on a message board. But I have to say, Poole is as unlikable as any athlete we have had in a long time.

What you say is not inaccurate. When a low IQ, unproductive player like Poole goes pro, it wore on Beilein.

It's astonishing how much Poole soiled his legacy in just a year. From that legendary shot to an entitled brat who couldn't back up his bravado and discouraged his coach. This is maybe the only kid we've had that i will kind of root against in the NBA (which he may never play a minute in).

Beilein - "Seriously, if any NBA team offers me a job I'm taking it."

Pistons - "Coach Beilien, we would like you to coach here."

Beilein - "Uuuh, did I say any NBA team?  Wait, Michigan just gave me an extension!  Thanks for calling though."

I found it odd that JB didn’t have any listings on the Chad Tough auction.   Even some of the assistants had listings.

Let's hope that Warde relies on the wisdom of the true unsung hero of the Beilein hiring: Tim McCormack!

He might want to update his list. Three are dead, the other is like 84 years old.

I feel much better knowing that our AD took a few minutes to make a list.  Phew, for a minute there I thought we lost the best coach we've ever had and no one had any pen or paper to write a list.
