Warde Might Have Anticipated Beilein's Departure
Per the Freep, Manuel thought Beilein might be leaving if he received another NBA offer.
A source with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press on Monday that, after Beilein's talks with the Pistons last year, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel became convinced that Beilein would leave Michigan if/when he received another offer from a pro team.
Manuel, per the source, has had a short list of candidates ready since that time. Michigan athletic department leadership has started the process of examining future candidates, though no names have been made clear at this time.
BAM! New coach by COB!
Sure faked me out...I thought JB was serious when he said Michigan was where he was meant to stay. Maybe Warde was more tuned in than we were.
As I said in an earlier post, I thought JB was somehow different last year...didn't seem as happy or intense, and I attributed that to his bypass surgery. Perhaps he was looking for a change and we didn't recognize the signs.
I thought JB was serious when he said Michigan was where he was meant to stay
Coach speak. Has anyone who transitions ever tip their hand before it happens?
Maybe Warde was more tuned in than we were
I sure hope so. Most corporations have succession plans for their execs, why Michigan and Barnacle Bill didn't when Carr retired by way of comparison is baffling. It's not being disloyal to the person to have a succession plan -- it's just good business.
Seriously. I am a low level manager and I have to update contingency plans for each employee annually.
Warde would be guilty of malfeasance if he didn't keep a short list. For all his revenue sports. Bill Martin's failure in that regard lead to 10 years of utter football mediocrity...at best.
Don Canham once said he kept a list of three names in his desk drawer in case Bo walked in one day and quit. And he would be in contact with all three within 24 hours and hire one within three days. But nobody will ever confuse cautious Warde Manual with aggressive Don Canham.
lol @ Barnacle Bill :D My M friends call him "Sailboat Willie."
Jordan Poole's attitude problem broke him .. .
Really? A 20 year old kid broke a 65 year old hall of fame coach? If he is that fragile then the NBA is NOT where he should go. For 40 years he coached players. In the NBA he will "coach" a roster of 15 separate corporations.
I see Beilein and Poole reuniting in Cleveland and winning ... not much.
I am usually very against personal criticism of college athletes on a message board. But I have to say, Poole is as unlikable as any athlete we have had in a long time.
What you say is not inaccurate. When a low IQ, unproductive player like Poole goes pro, it wore on Beilein.
It's astonishing how much Poole soiled his legacy in just a year. From that legendary shot to an entitled brat who couldn't back up his bravado and discouraged his coach. This is maybe the only kid we've had that i will kind of root against in the NBA (which he may never play a minute in).
Weird. I would’ve thought MGoBlog would know more about the athletic department than the UM AD.
Are we tracking the M Jet yet????
Beilein - "Seriously, if any NBA team offers me a job I'm taking it."
Pistons - "Coach Beilien, we would like you to coach here."
Beilein - "Uuuh, did I say any NBA team? Wait, Michigan just gave me an extension! Thanks for calling though."
Where is this narrative coming from that he turned down the Pistons job last year? Beilein himself said he was never offered the job in Detroit: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/23919902/michigan-coach-john-beilein-says-was-never-offered-detroit-pistons-job
Yes, he was never technically, formally offered the job. Declining to continue interviewing is functionally turning down the job, however.
Did he decline or was he asked to decline for all to save face?
It leaked and the process was taking too long. He had to decide between the job he already had and an unknown. He was out of time. If you remember, fans were getting pretty pissed off.
Did he? He just signed an extension with UM and took this job in Cleveland anyway. I guarantee you if the Pistons offered him that job, he would have taken it.
He would have coached the Pistons if they offered him the job. They didn't.
I don't care.
Then don't make shitposts pretending you know what happened, ijohnb.
I found it odd that JB didn’t have any listings on the Chad Tough auction. Even some of the assistants had listings.
The man (and Mrs. B) is co-chairing the event this year.
https://www.chadtough.org/gala/
He may not have listings, but he's very involved in this year's gala, which is Saturday.
whoa, that's some pro-level retconning, right there.
If true, that's great news. That's what a good AD is supposed to do.
A Michigan AD proactively dealing with an issue seem about as likely as JB leaving after a contract extenti... Dammit
What a terrible day, i wasn't expecting this at all
Don't be cheap Warde. Swing for the fences and hire us a damn good coach.
It isn't just Warde's money.
Let's hope that Warde relies on the wisdom of the true unsung hero of the Beilein hiring: Tim McCormack!
No need to click on the FREEP link. All the relevant data has been quoted!
Fuck the Freep.
Well, if Warde doesn't have a short list ready to go, he should be fired.
I don't think very highly of Warde after his pussy move for not backing JH after the 2016 game. Hopefully, he actually has this list and they don't include a bunch of nobodies.
Well, you will be very disappointed to read his short list from last year during the Pistons scare...
Porter Moser
Lavall Jordan
Dave Paulsen
There is an emphasis on getting a "straight-laced" coach.
very disappointed in that list for sure.
sooo... No Rick Pitino?
/s
Maybe that whole "Franz Wagner stays in Germany" thing makes more sense now.
I believe if Franz had decided to come to Michigan, Beilein would have stayed.
Nobody cares what you believe.
Warde didn't have a short list before that?
Yeah. AD should always have a top 5 replacements list for Football and Basketball, and a top 2 for pretty much every other sport.
Football
1. Josh Gattis
2. Josh Gattis
3. Gosh Jattis
4. John Harbaugh
5. Josh Gattis
Guy hasn't been on the Michigan sideline for a single game yet, but sure, why not?
Issa joke
- Adolph Rupp
- Dean Smith
- John Wooden
- Lute Olson
He might want to update his list. Three are dead, the other is like 84 years old.
and adolph rupp was a notorious racist.
Well, with a name like Adolph, yeah. I guess the bar is pretty low there
I feel much better knowing that our AD took a few minutes to make a list. Phew, for a minute there I thought we lost the best coach we've ever had and no one had any pen or paper to write a list.
It's on his palm pilot, he just needs to order a new charger from eBay so he can see who is on the list. The charger is coming from China, so he should get around to the hiring process by mid June. Everything is fine
