He'd be a good get. He coached Charles Woodson...nuff said. He's was at Florida as a DB coach, then went with Charlie Strong to Louisville as a DC. I think he'd make a good DC and DB coach. I was hoping for him or Teryl Austin.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
Not really at you, but damn, I could have coached Charles Woodson. Wayne Fontes coached Barry Sanders, where would Barry have been without Wayno.
All BS aside I hope we get Bedford.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^
Schwartz has them going in a good direction tho, le't hope that WC Ford doesn't fuck it up.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:37 PM ^
should buy the pictures Matt Millen had that allowed him to stay employed so long.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:27 PM ^
Wayne Fontes unleashed Barry Sanders.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:43 PM ^
You would have to give most of the credit to Charles!
January 14th, 2011 at 2:15 PM ^
Great coach and he can recruit
January 14th, 2011 at 3:22 PM ^
but how does anyone know Vance Bedford is a good coach and more importantly, a good DC? It is all wishful thinking since we can only look at one year of being a DC to judge.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:26 PM ^
He was DC for Oklahoma St. in 05-06 IIRC.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
I just dont understand why we would go after him when Randy Shannon is sitting out there. Vance "may be" a good DC but I think itss a iffy hire.
January 14th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
It's likely that even with the elevated monetary packages that M will offer it's coaches, we wouldn't offer enough to get him. That has been the word on the street.
January 14th, 2011 at 6:55 PM ^
If Randy Shannon is sitting out there on January 14, that's likely a sign that he doesn't plan to coach next season.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
Assumed it would be him or Austin.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
I also would like Teryl Austin. Vance Beford would be a good get as well, but Im hoping for Austin. Either one of those guys would be a good hire, imo. Randy Shannon would be my ultimate choice, but doubt thatd happen.
January 14th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
With ties to florida hopefully he could fill that recruiting void. Of course Shannon is a better candidate for that (as well as DC)
January 15th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
I WANT A D COORDINATOR NOW! I wish they would make announcement soon so whoever it is can start helping with recruiting!
January 14th, 2011 at 2:09 PM ^
He basically turned down Florida last year due to his loyalty to Strong at Louisville. Good Midwest and probably Florida recruiting roots.
And with a defensive-minded HC, you want a DC on the same page with the HC. While some may clamor for Shannon, I think that Hoke and Shannon would almost be TOO much personality on D.
Vance would be my choice right now.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
So how much does his loyalty to Strong at Louisville hurt our chances?
January 14th, 2011 at 2:41 PM ^
January 14th, 2011 at 2:48 PM ^
I'm guessing, with Hoke, we have the money to spend.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
Funny...
January 14th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
If this is true I might have to get out my o face.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
I have heard this also. I believe it will be either
1.) Teryl Austin
2.) Vance Bedford
3.)Greg Mattison
The names are not in any specific order?! Will wehear announcement today? Meeting of coaches is set for saturday!
January 14th, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
I hope its soon. Dallas Crawford is wondering as much as we are.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:42 PM ^
Vance Bedford. Coached with Hoke at U-M, then went into the pros, has been DC at OKST and now at Louisville ... was big-time-offered the Florida DC job last year but turned it down to follow Charlie Strong to Louisville ... so ... that Strong-tie is strong and he's well-paid there ... so Bedford may be choice-1 but not-as-likely to come???)
Teryl Austin. Coached at U-M with Hoke {followed Bedford as DB coach at U-M} then was NFL DB coach for 10-ish years, then one year DC as Florida ... now a free agent -- so he's available ... an excellent recruiter, Austin brought Marlin Jackson to U-M
Greg Mattison. He's DC with the Ravens and they're playing now, he was DC at U-M for LC but left for ND before '97 season, was at Florida as well .. Mattison is a good friend of Brady's and recommended Brady to U-M ( see Moeller interview http://michigan.scout.com/2/1039275.html ) ... he coached with Hoke at WMU under Jack Harbaugh.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:53 PM ^
Full Name: Vance JUANO Bedford
January 14th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
Teryl Austin would be good. He was thought to be the favorite for the Texas DC job; not sure what happened with that.
Bedford would be good also; having a Florida offer makes him at least a high 3-star.
Mattison is old. I don't know if I'm really into him. He has as good of a job as you can have as a defensive coach though. DC of the Ravens is impressive - clearly his connection to Jack Harbaugh helped him get that. Don't know how he'd recruit.
January 14th, 2011 at 3:27 PM ^
From that list, I'll take whoever we can get. They all possess good qualifications and would be a good fit on this staff.
I'm excited to see who we get.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
Can you say: "Charles Woodson's former position coach" ??? I like it.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
Plus, Shannon no doubt sees himself as an HC. Even if we were to nab him -- unlikely -- he wouldn't stay for long.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
Would be a good hire. Lots of experience as a DB coach and a DC, and Louisville was top 20 in both yards and points against this year.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:12 PM ^
He's an integral part of Strong's staff, and Bedford isn't a Michigan alum, just a former coach. Moving would only make sense if it means a lot more money. Maybe it's all about Hokamania...
January 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
a) pay raise
b) pay raise
c) coached with Hoke before and comfortable there. plus gets alot of credit if he turns us into a top 50 defense.
d) pay raise
January 14th, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
I know we haven't neem great the last few (3) years bout how about
e) Michigan trumps louisville
January 14th, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
He was getting $300k last year. I'm guessing we could top that. I wouldn't call it a lateral move either. It would be better national exposure if he has any hopes of becoming a HC at some point.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:17 PM ^
I don't think DC from Louisville to Michigan is a lateral move. DC at Louisville to position coach at Michigan is lateral.

The Michigan Difference
January 14th, 2011 at 2:50 PM ^
Could you repeat that?

The Michigan Difference

Thanks!
January 14th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
are you smoking?
"this is Michigan for gods sake"
January 14th, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
If they bring in this guy and someone like Corwin Brown for DB's I would like it. Corwin was the guy recruiting all the big time talent to ND under Wiess and is coaching for the Patriots right now - So he must know a thing or two about coaching as well.
GO BLUE!!!
January 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
#31 in FEI this past year, 7th in the nation in sacks, and by all accounts a great teacher of technique. YES PLZ.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
Not really a big name, well established DC like I was hoping for. But like I've been saying, if these guys can get the job done I'll be happy.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:18 PM ^
Bedford is a big name when it comes to his track record at UM and UF.
January 14th, 2011 at 2:19 PM ^
Especially given our time frame. Let's get him up here and start helping out with these defensive recruits...
January 14th, 2011 at 2:17 PM ^
if this happens! Getting the 'gang' back together could be pivotal for Michigan at this stage of the game. Having these guys on the staff with the experience of coaching at Michigan and knowing the tradition could definitely bode well in recruiting. They've 'been there and done that' at Ann Arbor and can sell what the school has to offer very easily.
