USA wins 4-2 over Canada

Team USA withstood a strong start from Team Canada which produced an early goal less than two minutes into the first period. Mann let a soft goal in, but would be solid the rest of the game.

Super impressed with Mann not only for shaking off the early goal in his first Olympic start, but also with him stopping 7 shots on a penalty kill, which was 5 on 3 for about 30 seconds, with under 6 minutes left in the third period.

Kampher had an assist on the first goal and Brisson scored USA's third goal.

Overall, USA didn't looked rattled at all with Canada coming out with some heavy hits and great forechecking throughout the game. USA's speed and skill had Canada on its heals for a good portion of the game. Very exciting game which should only boost their confidence moving forward.

USA squares off against Germany Sunday while Canada gets to regroup against China.

Go Blue!!

I love our northern Canuck brothers and sisters.

Also love smoking them in their own sport, which happens to be my favorite sport on the planet.

Go Blue and USA!!

For those who may be wondering how to spell the names of people who've played sports for the University of Michigan, he spells his last name Kampfer.

The penalty kill in the 3rd was ~3:30 minutes long, with a 31 second overlap for the 5v3.  I thought the USA played some great PK there, especially Mann - he was a MAN in goal.  But every time I saw Power get the puck on the point, I puckered up a little.  The US played some really good, and smart, hockey to close out that game.

BTW, was it me, or was Kampfer's penalty behind the net kind of weak?

Not just you!  They didn’t show many replays and I’m too lazy to look it up, but I was expecting to see an obvious high stick on the 1 replay they showed.  It looked like Staal collided with Kampfer behind the net in a fight for the puck, and he fell awkwardly.  Definitely wasn’t a normal high stick and seemed like a soft penalty.

This team is on a very nice roll. It's wonderful to see the "replacements" play with such skill and energy-a very good sign. Every game is important but turning right around and winning tonight would be huge.

A great game! Canada's forcheck for the first three minutes had me very worried, but Andy Miele's goal was huge to help USA withstand the wave of pressure. By the ten minute point of the first, US started to look like the faster (and more skilled) team, and kept that through the entire second period. The third was just a goaltending clinic by Mann. Very fun to watch!

This US team reminds me of Michigan in that they are young, fast & very talented.  Most teams will want to try to play extra physical trying to overpower them & as we've seen in college if you go out of your way to rough someone up you risk penalties & being out of position leading to odd-man breaks.

I can't believe I'm typing this but China was a great warm-up because they played a far more physical game than Canada did & had some good speed but clearly the talent difference is immense & ultimately that is what prevailed for the US

Awesome win but like I said tournament formatting gives that game no meaning in regards to kicking Canada out as every team will advance to the next round but beating Canada is in the books. If we get a bye it’s overrated. What if Canada has to play China then us again? Oh no

Yep, it's a head-scratcher of a format, here is an explanation of how it works:

...and really, all it determines is seeding and which teams get a bye once seeding is set.

Most important for the young US team is that the preliminary games give the coaches and players an opportunity to get to know each other on the ice and sort out line combinations.

USA Hockey needs to earn a bye and then use it to their advantage, hopefully including extra practice time.

Young amateur US team given no real shot. Meanwhile the defending champion Russia the favorite; all while tensions rise between the two countries. Domestically rising inflation, civil unrest and low moral sweep the US. Ending a long controversial war. Hell even the Trump-Nixon, Carter-Biden feels a bit similar.
