Urban lost 32 games in 18 college seasons. O/U on how long it takes him to lose 32 NFL games?

First of all, that's an incredible stat. The guy's an incredible coach in every dimension, and an equally vile person. But the NFL is such a different animal.  Like the 49ers, a team can have dismal losing season sandwiching a near Super Bowl victory, all hinging on some luck and an injury or two. It's an interesting experiment that we've all wanted to see play out for quite a while. My prediction: he's on pace for 32 losses in season 3 (something like 4-12, 6-10), but won't make it that long before he runs for the hills.

He most definitely put himself into a "perfect start" position with #1 pick (Lawrence obviously) as well as all that cap space. As most CFB coaches seem to find out, there are many more layers in the NFL, including most dictatorships don't seem to work out. He was an exceptional CFB coach, and even bigger douche. If Scurban gets uncomfortable with losing....and he will lose....he'll be back in CFB coaching.

Different then though, as UM wasn't a Death Star far above the rest of the league, thus showing a very clear shortcoming at the program level.  So the shortcoming was in the field on a series of mostly close games.  Meanwhile, Iowa, Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin, even perennial doormat Northwestern were beating UM and winning titles.  It was a more balanced league, so everyone wasn't aiming for top dog.

You dont have to respect the man, you dont even have to like him, but he has been one of the top college football coaches over the past 20 years. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of his tenure.

maybe i have stockholm syndrome because very strangely, there's a part of me that wants to observe this closely and maybe even hopes he does well.

i don't know why i feel that way. maybe because if he does well, it will solidify his place among the coaching elites and subsequently make the michigan beatings look a little less bad in retrospect.

So the difference between one of the greatest coaches of all time and Jim Harbaugh (at Michigan) is approx 1.5 losses a season?

Harbaugh doesn’t sound that bad when put in those terms.

What if he has a Harbaugh-like record? The 49ers were pathetic the year before JH took them over. is it supposed to be cathartic to imagine Urban sucking badly as a pro coach? I am disgusted by his moral failings, but I don’t think he is going to fail the way folks here want him to. He’s going to get Lawrence, probably drafts another first round talent, and tens of millions in FA money to spend.

Are you kidding? The guy has broken records everywhere he’s been. He will get to 32 losses in one season.
Seriously, I agree with XM that he will probably do okay and may leave the league before he loses 32 times.

Hey Pope Urban this is a different beast the NFL.  Not sure how that first conversation with Lawrence went: "Trevor, what will it take to get you to commit to Jacksonville?  What type of car? How much in the "Ricky Rudd" gym bag?  New house for mom?"

Lawrence: "This is the NFL.  Know what my salary is going to be. Nike has a $20M deal on the table. What are you talking about?"

Urbs:  "Sorry, I'm not used to dealing with player contracts and working under a salary cap."

Yeah, it's pretty unlikely if he's a tire-fire he'll make it long enough to lose 32 games (he'll just bolt before then).  I assume he'll be fine in the pros but likely won't stick around all that long because it's highly unlikely he can handle that type of grind.  He really has enjoyed such a talent disparity compared to 99% of his competition that it's going to be a culture shock for him not being able to just out-sign other teams to fill holes.

If it goes sideways, he will leave, due to "health issues", and then a year later be coaching ND.

Guys, this is pathetic. It's one thing to follow and post about Meyer, he's a successful coach in college trying the NFL for the first time. But for every post to be bait to talk shit about him is a bad look. Especially since he was famously 7-0 against Michigan. Everyone needs to get over it. He's no longer associated with OSU, we can be a little less negative about him. Anything else sounds like sour grapes.

Do you think MSU and OSU boards were so obsessed with Beilein when he went to the Cavaliers last year? They probably were, and it was equally stupid. Let's be better than them.

Dumb ass post.

My prediction, nobody is that into it.

Except those that live to spew hatred on a dead horse topic that sure gets alot of play in this swamp.

If we had a HC with 1/3 of Urbs abilities, we wouldn't  be bothering with child posting.

I think he will do just fine, but the board seems to want to just throw rocks all the time nowadays. This place has surely changed a lot over the years, and mostly for the worse, IMO.

The Jags have the most cap room of any team, 3 picks in the first 33 selections plus 7 more after that. If they draft well and sign the right free agents they could be competing for the playoffs next year.

The Liar ? has no morals and no integrity, anyone that hides anybody that beats a wife is a coward in my book.  All he cares about making himself looking good on the field.  He will be a bust in NFL and will leave this job with controversy and will all of sudden have health issues.

Odds are long for him to succeed. Think its ego driven on his part. If he were to win a Superbowl there would he be considered a better coach than Saban? I think that is part of his motivation. His entire career he has been compared to Saban.

I'll predict season 5. Think they have a great foundation and have an outside chance at 8-8 next year, more likely 6-10 or 7-9 and will improve in Lawrence's second season to be a better than .500 team.

The guy has great attention to detail and builds the team structure well in all facets.  I would be surprised if he wasn't in the playoffs his first or second year.

He truly is a football CEO that sweats the minutia.

Well they're in a tough division, Tenn and Indy look like playoff teams for a few years and a friend who follows the Niners said when the schedules came out that they play the AFC South in 21, so maybe  6-10 best case first year, putting 32 around year 4.  Ok I looked it up they play the AFC East then the bottom of the other divisions, so now I think 4-12.

I believe he won't be there in 2024.  Not sure if he'll have 32 losses by then, but I'd tend to say yes (or on pace if he leaves early).

I don't believe he will fail in an 0-16 sort of way, but rather that his biggest advantages don't translate.  Recruiting chops don't really help (except in that they are partly about relating to people, and that part does help).  I don't see a schematic edge either:  OSU has dominated for years with straightforward schemes run by superior athletes who are drilled on the four most common things they need to know, which lets their athleticism shine.  There aren't many teams that can out-athlete them (*cough* Alabama), so it's a fine college plan, but that won't really work in the NFL.

So he falls back on his other talents, which I don't believe will show up as exceptional in the NFL coaching ranks, and his ability to hire exceptional coordinators and staff, which might.

Apples and Oranges. 10-6 gets you in the playoffs and a contract extension in the league plus incentives. The only thing that makes any sense in the post is UM lost 32 games in 18 seasons... means he can flat out coach.
