Update (not to worry) on Shea Patterson (QB xfer) NCAA ruling timeline

Submitted by Arb lover on

Not a huge change, but possibly noteworthy. Landof10 is reporting that Patterson's lawyer Thomas A Mars (who is working closely with the university) has not yet submitted Patterson's request for a waiver.

“It’s a time-consuming process for Michigan to prepare the full package of documents that will go to Indianapolis,” Mars wrote.

Mars is anticipating that the NCAA makes its decision in late February, but indicates that the process could take longer.

What is possibly interesting here is not the delay in timeline, but rather the alleged scope of documents they are going to provide. Patterson is likely going to make the case that he would not have attended had he not been misled. I don't want to speculate about where the time consuming portion of the document discovery/recovery is coming from, but it's usually a good thing when there's a lot to provide (with the request for immediate eligibility).

Previously it has been reported and reflected here, that the NCAA would rule on Patterson's eligibility before signing day next month.

If you want the NCAA rules covering the rundown on Patterson's transfer, Brian did a great post earlier you should check out (again).

Mars has some experience with how the NCAA brings the request to the original institution for comment and uses that in the decision process, and earlier expressed his confidence on that front:

“I’m not aware of any rational, legitimate reason for Ole Miss to oppose any of the requests for immediate eligibility,” Mars said

but the SEC and B1G will do everything in their power to block Shea’s eligibility because it helps their other teams and they HATE Michigan. We are on a damn island on this one and will get boned unless Shea takes direct legal actions against the NCAA.

Unfortunately there are neither facts nor data that can influence these decisions. The rulings are completely subjective and arbitrary. It shouldn’t be that way.

Well, it is not as if Hoke left him with a cadre of great candidates that he had been recruiting for years.  Recruiting top guys is a multi-year process, so it is not surprising that it took Harbaugh a year or two for top recruits (QB especially) to sign on to join the program.

That said, I think we are all pretty excited about Dylan McCaffrey as a RS Freshman next year regardless of Shea getting the waiver.

Both Shea Patterson and Brandon Peters are of the same 2016 recruiting class and both Patterson and Peters competed in the same Elite 11 QB competition.  In fact Trent Dilfer, an Elite 11 coach and counceler, had higher praise for Peters than Patterson.  Of Peters he had this to say.

"He's a freak," Dilfer said, calling him likely the best overall athlete in the competition. That doesn't always show up during instruction, but this will be evident during the 7-on-7 events later this week. In my eyes, Peters is a tent-pole quarterback for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan — the sort of player the new staff can build a program around.

Whereas with Patterson, Dilfer said this:

Patterson and Eason are cut from the same cloth, though Patterson's made less noise through two days. But they're both so physically blessed that what will separate them, Dilfer said, is their ability to command a huddle once another 150-plus stars arrive as part of The Opening. "I hope they're both trying to be great," said Dilfer. Patterson certainly has the potential to be a great one.

The alternatives are Peters who looked flat out terrible in his last outing (and was average at best this past season) and McCaffery who has never played. So, yes people are rightly excited about Patterson because without him Michigan is probabaly looking at another 8-5 type season.
