UNLV starting QB injured in 37-3 loss

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Something to note about Michigan's next opponent, UNLV.

UNLV was hanging around with UCLA in the 1st quarter, down 10-0. UNLV starting QB Blake Decker went down with a hamstring injury on a scramble at the end of the quarter.

Decker was 21-39 for 319 yards and 2 TDs in UNLV's season opening 38-30 loss at Northern Illinois.

He was also 2-6 for 52 yards against #13 UCLA--which wound up leading his team in passing yards.

His backup, Kurt Palandech, was 4-15 for 4 yards with 1 INT but had 31 yards rushing on 8 carries.

UNLV passed for 4 yards after Decker went down. No word yet on if he'll be back for Saturday, but hamstrings are nothing to play with.

UCLA farted around for two quarters, only up 17-0 at half (which isn't surprising given they have a true freshman QB) but scored 17 in the 3rd quarter to win 37-3.

I'd love to see some data on CFB QB injuries in the first few weeks. Seems they are dropping like flies this year at a much higher rate than normal.

—BYU and UNLV—have gone down.

Football has always been a war of attrition, but it seems like serious injuries are far more plentiful these days.

Mangum is at least a backup QB to be weary of.

He threw what was basically another hail mary TD pass yesterday to upset Boise State.

If you take away the two desperation heaves he had in their game last night, he had 190 yards passing with 0 TDs and 2 INTs.

Same thing with the Nebraska game. They did literally nothing offensively until the final play when he chucked it up.

im from back in the 60s and 70s when everybody ran wishbone and triple option, so the qb was hit on every play. i find it interesting how a qb like rick leach played 4 years and hardly missed any time. of course there were injuries but it does seem like more now.

Even when in the pocket QBs are traditionally pretty vulnerable. When you combine the "blind side" issues with QBs trying to extend plays with their arms/legs, you have a good chance of people getting tackled with body parts extended and no way to brace/protect themselves.

Other players that get hit a lot (WRs/RBs) generally know when the hit is coming and can prep by tucking in. Even run first guys like Denard/old school option guys knew the hits were coming and were prepared. I think dual threat guys will continue to get hurt a lot more than other QBs until coaches adjust to have them stay in the pocket more.

I would much rather see us play our cupcake games vs new teams like UNLV, Army, or Memphis as opposed to traditional MAC teams. I understand the logistics of scheduling the directional Michigan/Ohio schools, but it would be better in my opinion to have the 9 B1G games, 2 P5 games, and then a matchup per year with a cross country cupcake team.

It sounds like UNLV may have actually won this game that they lost 37-3. UCLA farted around and only had a 28-3 lead early in the fourth quarter. We must beware now, beware....

Your opponent is your opponent. Grind out each week like it's the most important game in the world.

Sorry to hear aobut the UNLV QB. You always want to play your opponent at their strongest to show how strong you are.

Before we can take on the honest-to-goodness good teams, let's win convincingly against the so-called lesser teams. Don't worry about which 3rd or 4th level player will come off of the depth chart - just put the game away.

I hope to see a competitive quarter followed by three quarters of every RB we have churning up a plowed field into the UNLV endzone.

Assume for sake of argument that we're up by 4-5 scores at the end of the 3rd quarter, and we decide to rest our starters.  Who comes in off the bench at QB for the 4th quarter.

UNLV has some good WRs, that's it. I was at the game last night, without Decker, they are awful. The backup QB can't throw to save his life, he had a few good runs though. UNLVs defense is bad too. One thing I will say though, UNLVs field looked pretty good.

Nah, there's nothing wrong with confidence builders. Play a couple/few cupcakes and use those games to learn schemes and workout mistakes and kinks. Let those wins create confidence then roll into conference play with a cohesive offense (and defense for some teams...our D is good though). I believe that's why ohio state has a cupcake schedule year after year after year. Our schedule gets a bit tougher as the season progresses and I'd rather them have some wins, experience with a cohesive offense and confidence heading into those tougher games so the exact opposite doesn't happen should they go in battling against some seasoned non conference teams.

Wow, another starting QB from another future opponent. Just the starting QB injury thing in and of itself has been crazy this season but that's the second startig QB to be hurt from our non-conference schedule.

how they got  3 points but it looks like after their QB went down. I have no idea how these guys will play but it is very hard when you know you have no chance at all. UM would have to fumble inside our own one yard line for them to have a shot at 3 points.
