UFR POSBANG!

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on October 28th, 2020 at 11:24 AM

So it's finally a Wednesday after a game - a HUGE win.  That means we're expecting a UFR today!  It's been so long that I don't recall if this will be offensive or defensive.  If it's defense, we'll learn how Don Brown's defense held one of last years better offenses to a handful of non-threatening points and irrelevant yards.  And that's the bad news UFR this week!!!!  What a change in perspective that is after the last few years, right?!!?

The offensive UFR will just be fun.  FUN.

At first I was afraid, because you were begging for votes, so I downvoted you.

Then, I saw that you have been lurking for over a decade, so I reversed it.

Posting isn't all that grand.  For the most part, you get ridiculed.  If you are the first to break a story that you got from ESPN, you usually eff up the post and get crucified or it turns out that it was posted last week and...you get crucified.  If you do manage to post something of substance that is not a re-post, you get a few upvotes and people comment on the post.

That's just it, posting is kind of like having strict parents.  If you eff up, you hear about it.  If everything goes well, you don't hear a peep.

When you do reach the magic number, and you feel you have the 'great post' idea, there are several things to do before actually posting...

  1. Open up a second window/tab to the Board and keep F5'ing (make sure you don't double post)
  2. Use the search bar against your subject, then check through the last 10 pages (or so) of posts, to make sure you're not double posting
  3. Write out the post, include links (if appropriate).  Check spelling, grammar, formatting, etc...
  4. Re-read the post and check for spelling, grammar, formatting, links, etc...
  5. Update the second window to check for double posts
  6. Click 'Save' and hope for the best...

Affirmation of a post well made is a couple of upvotes and no flaming flames flamed at you.

Today is not only UFR Day, but I am sending out the Bat signal for #OPPONENTWATCH.....

Both are great reads.  This is the appeal of the Blog, UFR and great weekly updates like #OPPONENTWATCH and recruiting updates....

I know these are usually well written and a fun read. However, doesn't Brian admit to not knowing all that much about actual football? Wouldn't that then, sort of, ya know, defeat the whole purpose of the thing. Neg away.

He knows if the result of the play is good or bad based on the players that had the most impact on that play, primarily "on ball defenders" so borrow a phrase from hoops.

He knows what good leverage is and coverage is defensively, a good or bad call/non call from the refs. He knows a good throw and a catchable ball, when the runner made the right read based on blocking, and a successful block.

What he often doesn't know (he'll say so, from what I've read) is what the coverage responsibilities are for passes and runs for the defenders and what the right "hole" is for the RB pr the right pattern for the WR route. In other words, based on alignment alone and the reult of the play it's hard to know if a S has contain on the edge or a LBer or the DE 100% of the time. Audibles/sight adjustments pre-snap at the line could change what the route tree is so it's hard to say if the WR was in the exact right spot at the right time.

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted so much. Brian isn't a football expert, even though he's gotten a lot better since doing this. We used have pretty heated debates in the comments section with a couple HS football coaches who pretty regularly disagreed with him, but unfortunately they've been kind of run off. He also himself readily admits that without knowing what a play design was supposed to be, often he's guessing about what actually happened vs what was supposed to happen. That said, no one else is doing in depth play by play grading like he is except for PFF, but they don't really go into the details like he does. So, they're definitely a good read and mostly get the trend of players' and coaches' performances right, even if any given play is inaccurately analyzed.

The only negative was how the defense did not do a great job against the run. I'm a bit more worried when we go up against better backs and better OL. Hopefully we can just out score the other team if the D cannot stop an opposing offense.

I love Best and Worst. I love Neck Sharpies. I love Opponent Watch.

But UFRs are the gold standard -- the best thing about the site. Looking forward to it!!

Anyway, like many others, I want to see how the DTs and CBs graded out, so that maybe I can feel some hope there with respect to beating the better teams on the schedule. I also want to see how the offense grades, just to have something to celebrate.

Hell, we won on the road against a ranked team -- these are going to be great!!
