Too Early for a Respekt Week Thread?

As everyone here is well aware, it is Michigan State week. I thought now was a good time to go over some of the very nice things about our intrastate rivals, and show them the proper respekt they deserve.

In 2019 US News & World report gave our friends high marks for many of their graduate programs, including everyone's favorite meme, Supply Chain Logistics. They also scored very highly in training educators, rehab counselors and, the one that surprised me the most, nuclear physics!

MSU has a rich and storied history dating all the way back to 1855 when it became the United States FIRST agriculture college. Believe it or not, the first president of the college, Joseph Williams, was fired by the board because he pushed for what we would not call a liberal education that included courses like Latin and Greek. The State Board of Education called his curriculum elitist and canned him. A year later Mr. Williams got his sweet revenge when, as lieutenant governor, he helped pass a law that created a separate board, the State Board of Agriculture, which took over running MSU. In a shocking twist, this new board allowed his curriculum to be taught again.

On the football front, State has a very respektable 10 players on active NFL rosters. They boast 3 players that have been elected into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Since 2007 when Mark Dantonio took over, they hold a 123-62 record with 4 conference titles and 1 playoff appearance.

While we have derisively called them Little Brother in the past, I think it is safe to say that they have grown into a well rounded and completely RESPEKT worthy program. I for one hold them in the utmost regard and look forward to our gentleman’s clash on Saturday.

I mean I'm not worked up about it. I just think it should have went the way of Dantonio when that era ended.

Sparty definitely doesn't feel disrespected anymore: they have been to the playoffs, they have won the division/conference, and they are currently ranked in the top ten with a coach who is likely to get interviewed for the vacant LSU HC position.

Personally, I love both of my younger brothers very much.

As such, I cannot think of a term that conveys unconditional love more than referring to someone as my "little brother."

I've definitely softened on my hate for MSU overall (I'm currently a student here but have my bachelors from UM) but I can't lie and say that I don't hate their sports teams any less. The campus is truly beautiful (I like it more than UM's tbh) but the city is nowhere near AA.

I'd say it's about a week late. The Sparts have already been bemoaning Jacub Panasuik's relative lack of hype compared to Hutchinson's... ??

I just want to win so they'll STFU for the rest of the year.

My godfather was a 2x graduate of Michigan State and a rather respected veterinarian in Farmington Hills / Southfield for many years, and he was a really nice guy who once let me parade around his street in the 12 Mile / Orchard Lake area with a blunderbuss (a real 17th century English one, not a replica) one time, so that was cool.

I have a fair amount of respect for the university that is in East Lansing, as I owe my existence to my parents meeting there as undergrads. They went on to earn a combined total of five degrees from that school, and now live back in East Lansing in their retirement. I grew up in the Lansing area, rooted for MSU in my younger/more ignorant days, and live in mid-Michigan. I can admit that I actually want their sports teams to win occasionally, particularly if it is over a team from the Worst State Ever. I don't have a lot of respect for their athletic department anymore, however, and have been a Michigan fan for forty years. This week especially I'm all about the Blue.

Go Michigan! Beat State!

I know this doesn’t exactly fit with the spirit of the thread but…

if it weren’t for the little piece of paper with their name written on it that I keep in my pocket on a daily basis, I wouldn’t remember their fucking name.

This is one of those weeks where I really miss my Dad. He went to MSU and I went to Michigan and we always had a small bet on the game. He would have loved this year's game

Actually it's a shared Disrepkt year:

The state Ohio has two teams above our two state of Michigan undefeated teams; one of them has a loss and the best team in Ohio isn't even Pwr5;)

It's time for us to work together again and finally take Toledo! (or better B1G Championship).

I’m always fascinated by the psychology of fandom and rivalries and many State fans are a prime example. They hate Michigan so much that any objectivity gets thrown out the window and it’s tough to even have a normal conversation with them about the teams and game. You see the same thing in today’s political climate. Us humans are strange creatures.
