TomVH: DB Blake Countess Offered
Maryland defensive back Blake Countess (5'10", 171 lbs, 4 Star) was offered by Michigan today. This via his twitter feed:
Good Day, Momma always said good things come to those who wait. Got a call today from Michigan.#offered
I'll have more on him in the weekly update, but here's his highlight video as well.

Curious. Why did we wait until November to offer a 4 star guy? We've entered the backup offering time of year and this guy is no Plan B.

Playing hard to get. You know you want them. They know you want them. You just gotta try to make them think you might not want them so they want you more.
(This is why I never get girls.)
November 5th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
Mgopoints may impress those of us on the board, I am afraid they also might be a stronger indication of why you "never get girls". Just sayin.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:37 PM ^
Actually, in my experience, it's not the amount of time I spend on MGoBlog that's the problem, it's the fact that I'm constantly jabbering about it even when I'm not here. :)

For the rarely seen smiley face :/

Maybe they didn't think they had that good of a shot at this kid? That'd be the only thing I can think of.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
Grades, test scores, other troubles.... Just look at all the crazy shit our players and recruits have run into the past few years.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:53 PM ^
Pretty sure Taylor Lewan wasn't on UM's radar until November as well. That worked out.
November 8th, 2010 at 1:56 PM ^
Maryland isn't a hot recruiting area, and most choose ACC schools or Penn State. However with our needs I figured someone would've noticed him and every other 4 or 5 star defensive back in the country and offerered them.
Please?

Lets go Furman! Pull a Ricardo and get this kid here!!!
November 5th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
Jelani Jenkins (LB, Florida) went to Our Lady Of Good Counsel, though.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:52 PM ^
Is a corner, no?
November 5th, 2010 at 10:18 PM ^
Jelani's the linebacker, Janoris is the corner
November 5th, 2010 at 10:19 PM ^
Janoris Jenkins = junior corner for Florida from Pahokee.
Jelani Jenkins = redshirt freshman linebacker for Florida from Good Counsel.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:09 PM ^
Furman went to Old Mill HS. He is from the same HS as monster recruit Jenkins that starts at LB for Florida now.

If you're interested in playing time, a great academic institution, and playing in front of 110,000+ every saturday, than Michigan is the place for you.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:00 PM ^
he's commits, can tackle, not injury prone, takes great angles to the runner, and has great speed
November 5th, 2010 at 9:03 PM ^
And hopefully he arrives on campus as a RS-JR with some college experience. /s
November 6th, 2010 at 12:14 AM ^
i hope he's good at football.........no shit really?

Asked this in another thread but it got lost in the shuffle (and I don't want to make a new thread):
I know you speak regularly with current players and their families. Do you have any additional insight into what's going on on the defensive side of the ball this year? If the info is sensitive for some reason, a vague "yeah, but you'll find out later" will suffice. Thanks as always for the solid info.

Look forward to hearing more about it some day. Thanks for the response.

TomVH.... smooth as usual
November 5th, 2010 at 9:44 PM ^
Tom, we are all addicts and you tease us with "later"!? Another sleepless night pondering what Angry Michigan Hating God has in store for us next.
I don't suppose the news about the defense will be that Charles Woodson has been granted another year of eligibility and will be starting for us tomorrow!?

Way to build the drama
November 5th, 2010 at 10:38 PM ^
it when you play hard to get
November 5th, 2010 at 9:02 PM ^
I dont like him...
Only because he can't play for us tomorrow...

Is anyone else starting to feel a little bad for Daren Kitchen? This kid has been waiting forever to get an offer, yes he is lower rated but he obviously wants to bleed maize and blue. I just don't like seeing kids keep getting placed in front of this kid on the priority list.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
I was thinking the same thing. I know the coaches want to get higher-rated kids, but at the rate DBs seem to be dropping at UM, having depth will never hurt. I'm sure the coaches are still in touch and maybe he'll be hearing soon.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:14 PM ^
I think Kitchen will wind up blue. He is the staff's backup to if they can't get the likes of Haha and other higher profiled DBs. Bringing in Countess and Kitchen would be fine by me.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:45 PM ^
We still have commitments from Brown (althought it might not last) and Hollowell. Dallas Crawford has Michigan out front, as does Countess (seemingly). 3/4 cornerbacks is already a lot for a class, sadly I don't think Kitchen's going to get his offer, unless the coaches think he has value at safety.
November 5th, 2010 at 11:22 PM ^
No, I don't feel bad for him. Because he's not very good and we have enough of those kinds of guys on the roster. We already have two mediocre cornerbacks committed in this class. Why add another mediocre cornerback? Let's go after the big boys right now.
November 6th, 2010 at 12:21 AM ^
with this logic they should just recruit me...ill bleed maize and blue all day for you.....you don't like seeing kids like this getting placed in front of daren kitchen on the priority list because he's better? makes perfect sense...
November 6th, 2010 at 1:20 AM ^
No they shouldn't just recruit you. If you have offers from programs like Nebraska and Stanford, like Kitchen does, then maybe you'd be worth the effort. All jokes aside, it is not like this kid is some sub par talent. Kitchen has decent size and is a natural corner. He has multiple BCS offers still lists Michigan ahead of them all.
November 5th, 2010 at 9:14 PM ^
Welcome to the Recruiting Big Board Mr. Countess. Have you seen our depth chart? It looks very inviting, no?
November 5th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
Next year might be the first time we can actually red shirt a defensive back. A guy can dream can't he?
November 5th, 2010 at 9:40 PM ^
Man, that would be awesome. Words like "player development" and "maturation" would be thrown about guys who are not forced to play significant minutes when they step onto campus. Crazy.

From Mike Farrell earlier:

Michigan could be the new leader for cornerback Blake Countess from Maryland
November 5th, 2010 at 9:17 PM ^
I saw this guy when they played St. X on ESPN earlier in the year and was really impressed. Maybe someone can comfirm this but I'm pretty sure Good Counsel has a pretty solid junior db on their team too.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:42 PM ^
I think you're looking for Stefon Diggs. He plays both ways, he's a stud with "legitimate interest in Michigan" according to Sam Webb on the recruiting roundup a few weeks ago, and has many an offer.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:19 PM ^
oh what the heck. Hurry up and commit please...our helmets got wings.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:34 PM ^
Whenever I see a posting with Tom VH in the title it's good to be on the internet.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:36 PM ^
I appreciate the update.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:39 PM ^
on how much this matters to him? Rivals says he's high on 3 different schools. What are our chances with him?
November 5th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
See TOB's above response with link to Rivals Analyst Mike Farrell's comment,
Michigan could be the new leader for cornerback Blake Countess from Maryland
November 5th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
According to Mike Farrell of Rivals we may lead for him now that we offered.
November 5th, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
he seems too athletic to play DB for UM. Tom, any possession receivers out there we can offer to play DB? That type of player would be a better fit for UM's attack style defense.
November 5th, 2010 at 11:22 PM ^
Look at 4:53 of the highlight video, he's playing ten yards off the LOS. He'll fit in nicely.
