TomVH: Chris Bryant Update

Submitted by TomVH on

I usually save a lot of these posts for the Weekly Update, but I'm trying to give people something else to read other than bad news and coaching rumors.

4 star Illinois OL Chris Bryant has scheduled his press conference to announce his decision on January 21st. It's likely down to Michigan, Ohio State, and Arizona.

The coaching uncertainty has played into things for Chris, but at one point Stanford was in the mix and one of his top schools if that means anything. Ohio State has four offensive linemen committed already, and could potentially land Glenville OL Aundrey Walker. They haven't offered yet, but have told Chris they may offer after break. That seems odd, but who knows.

Wondering if it's more than just whether or not RR stays...but as you've said the 'uncertainty' of who the next coach may be...is this a distinction in the minds of some of these recruits?

Problem with a late coaching change from someone outside the program (or the area) is that it undermines 2 recruiting classes.  Not only is the current staff working on the 2011 class, they have built relationships with the 2012 class.  A new regime would have to try to keep the current commits, finish the 2011 class and work on next years class.

Would love to land this kid, not only because it's always great to get highly ranked O-line help, but his high school QB at Simeon is a junior and could be a big target for next year's class.

How could you forget about Jordan Diamond, 6'6'' 275 lb OT.  He came with Chris  on a unofficial visit and I ran into them outside the Big House.  Bryant was huge and with Diamond's frame he could fill out to be a beast.

To use a word from coach rod, "Irregardles" (sic) of who the coach is at Michigan next year, who wouldn't want to play for either of these guys? They are passionate coaches. Harbaugh has shown he definitely has the chops to coach and recruit. Coach Rod as well but it might just be that Coach RR just isn't cut to coach in the Big 10.

Tom, thanks for your post.  I have a quick question for you.  It looks like we have 3 other OL already committed.  Do we definitely want to get 4 in this class?  I assume yes.  So, are we in it for any other OL recruits?  As a backup to Chris.  You didn't have any posed on your weekly update last week.  I really hope we get him but I was just wondering if there was a backup plan.
