Those Who Stayed: Greg Matthews

Submitted by Kaminski16 on

Greg Matthews came from a proud Buckeye family -- then he found enlightenment.

We talked to Greg about his recruitment and playing days, relationship with Lloyd Carr, Harbaugh, Hoke, and even Tate Forcier, among other things. Greg was even nice enough to throw a parting shot at the SEC for us.

Really good stuff from Brian here. As always, follow us on Twitter (link in my sig) if you enjoyed and want to hear more.

I always liked Mathews. I'll never forget sitting in Spartan Stadium in 2007 and watching him make a solid TD grab in the 4th that helped lead to the Henne-Manningham comeback. The place went silent.

As far as importance goes, the Michigan State TD throws in the fourth quarter were the best throws Henne ever made. The touch and precision on the TDs to Mathews and Manningham were out of this world good.

Henne was great in the bowl game as well, but that was nothing more than an exhibition game.

Sorry, but what? That bowl game at the end of that awful 2007 season, which saw Carr, after his last game as a coach, ride victorious across the field on the shoulders of his players, was way more than an exhibition game. By your definition, any bowl game that did not lead to being crowned national champions was a mere exhibition game.

...that handed out a trophy.  After that game, I kept saying "What if?"

What if we were healthy all year?
What if Lloyd would have ran that type of open offense for the past ten years?

It was the most bittersweet feeling I ever felt after a game Michigan won.

Bowl games were originally rewards for a good regular season.  That's why national championships used to be voted on before the bowl games.

Not nearly as bad as if we hadn't won the game. He's probably just eternally mad at himself that he missed a shot at going down in Michigan history on that one. (I mean, I honeslty don't remember a single other thing Savoy did other than drop that pass)

Still remember vividly seeing it from the student section and half the students started to go bonkers because we thought he had it

to come out of Edgewater High School in Orlando to ever play for Michigan. Not to be forgotten, he had a big game against the Gators in front of his hometown crowd in the Capital One Bowl his sophomore season. 7 catches for 62 yards.
