Tarik Black Injury Update - He's Lightly Jogging!

Submitted by saveferris on October 2nd, 2018 at 7:50 AM

Amongst the injury updates on 247, one item of good news is that Tarik Black is lightly jogging and has an appointment with the doctor to determine when he can get clearance to return to the field.  Not being a physician, I don't know how much time there is between "lightly jogging" to torching MSU's DBs for 60 yard TDs, but it sounds promising.

Two weeks sounds like a quick turnaround from light jogging to live full contact.  PSU after the off week may be more realistic.  But, it is encouraging to hear he's back on his feet.

If he receives the all clear that everything is fully healed and able to return to full running he could technically return in 2 weeks, and in the pro's most likely would be expected to with more of a "pitch count". As a college kid and having previous issues I am willing to bet the medical team will side on being cautious and return earliest in 4 weeks. But that is an educated guess with not knowing what exact fracture occurred, how the healing has progressed, and how his rehab progression has been throughout the process.

Getting him back on the field would be huge. If we can have him for the PSU game I would be happy. We need some speed out there. Gives Shea so many options to choose from and makes it tougher for defenses to cover.

MSU is 18 days away - a little more than 2 weeks. I think the likely scenario is he returns for PSU but would be awesome if sooner. I more concerned about getting Evans and Solomon back in time for Wisconsin and MSU. Those guys will be key for those grind it out games.

My theory has been that Black had a Jones fracture (base of 5th metatarsal). This was best case scenario given that he had broken foot. My ortho buddy put the timetable for return to play at 6 weeks after surgery given good union of the break so that seems right on schedule.

Maybe MSU is in play but certainly PSU after the bye.

Random internet person one claims a buddy is an Ortho ( I'm assuming this is short for orthopedic doctor not orthodontist) and says 6 weeks for Jones fracture.  Random internet person two anecdotally reports that he couldn't have play wr 8 wks after his Jones fracture.

One of these two must be wrong, but the internet is never wrong.  Quite the quandary.

He is way ahead of me even when I am fully healthy. Seriously, I am glad hear this. Want to see what an elite receiver (dare I say receivers) can do in our offense against OSU.

That's good news.  But as leaders and best, I'm hoping the university is putting a lot of effort into cybernetics R&D so we can just replace the parts of the human anatomy that break like this.

"Speaking on the Inside Michigan Football weekly radio show, Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said both junior defensive end Rashan Gary and junior running back Chris Evans will be evaluated through the week to see if they’re available for Saturday’s matchup against Maryland.

"I don't think either is long term,” Harbaugh said, noting that he doesn’t have a crystal ball to see whether either’s health will improve. ”Both would be questionable for Saturday's game if we're talking in NFL lingo.”

When Evans pulled up on that run, my first reaction was "that looks exactly like what happened to me a month ago". I'm pretty sure his hamstring cramped, but because he was sprinting when it happened, he probably pulled it on his next stride since he couldn't stop immediately. It was a nagging injury for me, and I re-pulled it a couple weeks later.

I'm thinking Evans is probably a slightly superior athlete to me, and is probably getting better treatment that my sit on the couch and drink beer therapy, so hopefully he's good to go and it doesn't reoccur.

Hope they don't rush him back, but hopefully he can make it back to the field sooner rather than later. The more weapons Shea has, the better.

I'd assume by the MSU game may be a tough ask, but having the bye week after that may give him enough time to get back for Penn State.

I don't know if that would even be smart to do.  After the State game they would have a full bye week to incorporate him into the offense.  To just insert him in a huge road game when the team will have become accustomed to their roles without him by that time does not seem to be ideal.

I believe UMBig11 said he thought Black might be back by Nov. 3 (PSU) or a bit later. I assume if he was in for PSU it would be in limited snaps and he'd see more action ramping up against Rutgers and IU before we go to Columbus.

I feel that the PSU game is the earliest he would return, which would be fine. MSU would be nice, but only if he is at or close to 100%.

Agreed. 3-4 regular season games + bowl game is not ideal but with no redshirt left, you take whatever you can get from him, assuming he's cleared medically and its not a risk for reinjury.

He probably won't be in ideal condition for PSU but  should be fine by the time we play OSU if all goes well. Would take a fully weaponized Shea Patterson with Tarik, Donovan, Nico, and Gentry in Columbus.
