Tarik Black Injury Update - He's Lightly Jogging!
Amongst the injury updates on 247, one item of good news is that Tarik Black is lightly jogging and has an appointment with the doctor to determine when he can get clearance to return to the field. Not being a physician, I don't know how much time there is between "lightly jogging" to torching MSU's DBs for 60 yard TDs, but it sounds promising.

Two weeks sounds like a quick turnaround from light jogging to live full contact. PSU after the off week may be more realistic. But, it is encouraging to hear he's back on his feet.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:00 AM ^
Agreed. Would love to have him back but not at the risk of hurrying him back with an increased possibility of reinjury.
October 2nd, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
I wouldn't put it past Sparty to identify which foot was broken, then repeatedly step on it on purpose to see if they can break it again.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:39 AM ^
If he receives the all clear that everything is fully healed and able to return to full running he could technically return in 2 weeks, and in the pro's most likely would be expected to with more of a "pitch count". As a college kid and having previous issues I am willing to bet the medical team will side on being cautious and return earliest in 4 weeks. But that is an educated guess with not knowing what exact fracture occurred, how the healing has progressed, and how his rehab progression has been throughout the process.

Getting him back on the field would be huge. If we can have him for the PSU game I would be happy. We need some speed out there. Gives Shea so many options to choose from and makes it tougher for defenses to cover.

PSU and OSU are the two best teams left on our schedule...until the playoffs.
Lets hope he can be back for at least those games.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:44 AM ^
Might want to hold off on buying those tickets, chief.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:53 AM ^
Let a man dream and have some fun.
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:57 AM ^
Agree. Also the B1G champ game. But I am with you on this train!
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
Nah, pretty likely that whoever we play in the Conf Champ game would not be as tough as PSU or OSU.
October 2nd, 2018 at 7:58 AM ^
Yes, probably not ready in two weeks. But it’s definitely better than “delicately trotting”!!!
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:17 AM ^
The MSU comment was just my Pollyannaish optimism, but you're right in that it's probably a pipe dream. The linked article provided NO prediction on an actual return date. If we had him back for the final third of the season, that would be tremendous.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:25 AM ^
.....which is much better than when he was previously seen “daintily sashaying.”
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:38 AM ^
Which, in turn, is a better prognosis from gingerly tiptoeing
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:54 AM ^
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:10 AM ^
No, but did they just become best friends?
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:59 AM ^
Next thing you know they're building a bunk bed together from 2 beds entirely not made to be bunked together at all.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:06 AM ^
actually, with a midfoot injury, tiptoeing woiuld be pretty good.
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:01 AM ^
AND tentatively shuffling.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:15 AM ^
I wonder what type of cardio workout protocol they had him do during his rehab? I would think getting back into anything resembling game-playing condition, even for a young kid, would take a few weeks.
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:58 AM ^
They had him doing 1980s aerobics. He was wearing what looks like a one-piece woman's bathing suit cut very high on the hip, and translucent nylons. Very strange rehab...
October 2nd, 2018 at 11:19 AM ^
MSU is 18 days away - a little more than 2 weeks. I think the likely scenario is he returns for PSU but would be awesome if sooner. I more concerned about getting Evans and Solomon back in time for Wisconsin and MSU. Those guys will be key for those grind it out games.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:04 AM ^
My theory has been that Black had a Jones fracture (base of 5th metatarsal). This was best case scenario given that he had broken foot. My ortho buddy put the timetable for return to play at 6 weeks after surgery given good union of the break so that seems right on schedule.
Maybe MSU is in play but certainly PSU after the bye.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:14 AM ^
That’s the exact fracture my son suffered and was able to wrestle in 6 weeks. There’s hope here.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:18 AM ^
no, I had a jones fracture last year. It is the longest heal time for a foot fracture because of the lack of blood flow in that area. I dont think he could play wide receiver 6 or even 8 weeks after a jones fracture..it's probavly somethung else
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:42 AM ^
Was yours surgically repaired?
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:50 AM ^
Random internet person one claims a buddy is an Ortho ( I'm assuming this is short for orthopedic doctor not orthodontist) and says 6 weeks for Jones fracture. Random internet person two anecdotally reports that he couldn't have play wr 8 wks after his Jones fracture.
One of these two must be wrong, but the internet is never wrong. Quite the quandary.
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
My son was back in 6 weeks but there was no surgery involved. Also 16 at the time. I remember the dr saying 8-12 if surgery was needed but his was a very minor fracture unlike Blacks.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:05 AM ^
He is way ahead of me even when I am fully healthy. Seriously, I am glad hear this. Want to see what an elite receiver (dare I say receivers) can do in our offense against OSU.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:20 AM ^
Yeah, I was about to not the irony in that I actually suffered a Jones fracture while “lightly jogging” last week.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:08 AM ^
That's good news. But as leaders and best, I'm hoping the university is putting a lot of effort into cybernetics R&D so we can just replace the parts of the human anatomy that break like this.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:28 AM ^
We can rebuild him. We have the technology.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:17 AM ^
"Speaking on the Inside Michigan Football weekly radio show, Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said both junior defensive end Rashan Gary and junior running back Chris Evans will be evaluated through the week to see if they’re available for Saturday’s matchup against Maryland.
"I don't think either is long term,” Harbaugh said, noting that he doesn’t have a crystal ball to see whether either’s health will improve. ”Both would be questionable for Saturday's game if we're talking in NFL lingo.”
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:21 AM ^
OH MY GOD! HARBAUGH REFERENCED THE NFL! HE’S LEAVING FOR NFL READ THE TEA LEAVES YOU IDIOT DENIERS HE’S DROPPING OBVIOUS HINTS!!
/sparty fan probably
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:40 AM ^
I think we can definitely beat Maryland without Evans and Gary. So, keeping them out one more week might be a good idea so they can be fully ready and rested for Wiscy.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:56 AM ^
Evans sure. Gary? I dunno man I don't think Maryland is ass, despite their loss to Temple.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:51 AM ^
When Evans pulled up on that run, my first reaction was "that looks exactly like what happened to me a month ago". I'm pretty sure his hamstring cramped, but because he was sprinting when it happened, he probably pulled it on his next stride since he couldn't stop immediately. It was a nagging injury for me, and I re-pulled it a couple weeks later.
I'm thinking Evans is probably a slightly superior athlete to me, and is probably getting better treatment that my sit on the couch and drink beer therapy, so hopefully he's good to go and it doesn't reoccur.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:27 AM ^
Hope they don't rush him back, but hopefully he can make it back to the field sooner rather than later. The more weapons Shea has, the better.
I'd assume by the MSU game may be a tough ask, but having the bye week after that may give him enough time to get back for Penn State.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:54 AM ^
MSU is more then reasonable. Barring a setback and assuming he's cleared on Sunday, he should absolutely be back by MSU.
Edit: Shit. Meant PSU above. MSU is a possibility though.
October 2nd, 2018 at 10:05 AM ^
I don't know if that would even be smart to do. After the State game they would have a full bye week to incorporate him into the offense. To just insert him in a huge road game when the team will have become accustomed to their roles without him by that time does not seem to be ideal.
October 2nd, 2018 at 8:51 AM ^
I believe UMBig11 said he thought Black might be back by Nov. 3 (PSU) or a bit later. I assume if he was in for PSU it would be in limited snaps and he'd see more action ramping up against Rutgers and IU before we go to Columbus.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:01 AM ^
I feel that the PSU game is the earliest he would return, which would be fine. MSU would be nice, but only if he is at or close to 100%.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:03 AM ^
I doubt we see him on the field this year. The season is already almost half over, and he's been out of conditioning and practice for 7 weeks or so.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:12 AM ^
If he can go, he’ll play. He’s too good and he’s already used a redshirt.
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:19 AM ^
Agreed. 3-4 regular season games + bowl game is not ideal but with no redshirt left, you take whatever you can get from him, assuming he's cleared medically and its not a risk for reinjury.
He probably won't be in ideal condition for PSU but should be fine by the time we play OSU if all goes well. Would take a fully weaponized Shea Patterson with Tarik, Donovan, Nico, and Gentry in Columbus.
October 2nd, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
He can appeal for a 2nd medical redshirt, right?
October 2nd, 2018 at 1:34 PM ^
Yes; however, there's an almost zero chance he's around for six years if he finds a way to stay healthy moving forward.
October 3rd, 2018 at 4:18 AM ^
He has used his redshirt? Did he get a medical redshirt last year?
October 2nd, 2018 at 9:09 AM ^
Very encouraging. Hopefully he is back for the last three games at least. Love.
