Talking Cars Thursday: GM To Sell All-Electric Hummer in Starting in 2021
It may not be Tuesday, but GM has announced they are bringing back the Hummer. But this one is going to be all-electric so there won't be any complaints about its effect on the environment.
GM's updated Hummer is expected to compete directly with Tesla's "Cybertruck."
They have an upcoming Super Bowl Commercial featuring Lebron James to formally announce it. But hey, this looks good for the people saying we would have all-electric cars prominently on the roads by 2030 (me).

A battery powered Hummer? Sounds like the worlds largest vibrator to me.

If they were going to bring a brand back, I would have hoped to bring back Saturn. Affordable, durable, and efficient.

They aren't bringing the brand back, it's going to be GMC

Still have my 1998 Saturn.

Cool!

What total market share do you say would be prominent?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:17 PM ^
I would consider it's prominent when it's to the point that you aren't surprised to see one on the road. For example, when you see a Tesla on the road, it's still an unusual event.

Michigan made it hard for Tesla's to be sold here. I expect to see a lot more of them now.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:30 PM ^
It feels like every month I see more and more.
January 30th, 2020 at 3:57 PM ^
I know we have at least two in my apartment parking garage. I agree though i definitely see them more often than when i moved back here a few years ago.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:32 PM ^
I'm already there where I live (Tampa/St. Pete area). I see probably half a dozen Teslas on my commute every day. I would definitely consider getting one if I was in the market for a new car.

I hear this sentiment a lot.
When I was in Palo Alto last week, I decided to do an informal sampling of EVs passing me from SFO to Stanford.
It was 40%. At one point there was 5 Teslas in a row flying past me in the left hand lane.
January 30th, 2020 at 2:07 PM ^
I see Teslas all the time (SE MI). One of my clients has two, one for each of her teenage boys. I expect outside MI, where they are easier to sell, they are even more prominent.
Still doubt the majority of cars will be electric by 2030. Maybe by 2040.

It is not abnormal outside of Michigan.

Cybertruck $40K, 250 mile range
Rivian truck/suv $70K, 400 mile range
Hummer $80K, gets you to McDonald's & 1/2 way back
January 30th, 2020 at 1:44 PM ^
That's the genius of it. If the driver can only make it to McDonald's, he/she/they will need a vehicle the size of a Hummer to haul their fat ass back and forth.
Also, battery technology is improving to the point where the McHummer will likely be able to haul one's fat ass all the way back home by the time it is launched.

Exactly what I was thinking - maybe over one hill but not back

Lincoln announced yesterday their model will be a badge engineered Rivian.
January 30th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
Badge-engineered seems harsh. Putting a 100% different tophat on top of a pre-engineered platform isn't badge engineering.

The average sale price of a Tesla 3 is $50k and I imagine the Cybertruck will be north of $65k. I like how you alone have the retail price of a hummer EV. That said, the Rivian looks like it will clean the clock on sales to truck owners compared to the Cyberpyramid thing. All I know is that if GM came out with a cyber truck that looked like Tesla's pyramid that it would be the butt of endless jokes. I still remember my friends in the 80s telling me that the Big 3 had no future in trucks now that Toyota and Nissan were coming out with big trucks. Don't underestimate the big 3 (whether the Rivian/Lincoln joint model or other future electric SUVs and trucks.

The Hummer that can match specs is going to be 2x the cost of the Cybertruck.
January 30th, 2020 at 4:14 PM ^
Does that take into account Elon's inability to sell a vehicle for the price he originally promises?
January 30th, 2020 at 5:31 PM ^
We get it, you work for Ford.
January 30th, 2020 at 6:38 PM ^
We get it, you're an Elon Musk fanboy buying a ballooned stock for a company that has yet to produce more than one profitable quarter in its history.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:22 PM ^
Electric for electric sake. What was the market penetration for the original Hummer? This will be 5 to 10% of that. Probably a bad business case but move forward anyway. Typical.
January 30th, 2020 at 12:23 PM ^
Does it have snow tires?
January 30th, 2020 at 12:49 PM ^
i still think it's funny that people think electric cars are "clean". as if it doesn't take the burning of fossil fuels to make said electricity; that is, as of today.
January 30th, 2020 at 1:02 PM ^
Do you think that most people don't know that?
Honest question. I had assumed most do. It's still cleaner.

If you truly care about the environment you aren’t driving a 5000 lb vehicle, and you certainly aren’t flying in airplanes. Only hypocrites would do that.
January 30th, 2020 at 7:14 PM ^
You do realize the all steel Tesla cybertruck is expected to weigh over 6,500 pounds. Saint Musk could not be doing anything to harm the environment. Please retract your statement.

Strip mining of rare earth metals including nasty chemicals to separate the elements
Processing the rare earth metals and the use of them in the manufacturing of the battery
Coal fired power plants that use tremendous amounts of water to produce the juice needed to charge and recharge batteries
Disposal of these batteries
January 30th, 2020 at 3:04 PM ^
While definitely far from perfect, they are one of the few options we have to reduce greenhouse gas from vehicle transport
Further
- Coal-fired generation accounted for less than 25% of electricity in the US and it is only getting lower
- Extracting oil involves significant amounts of water pollution
- Combustion engines, even with all of the advancements are the cause of significant amounts of our traditional air pollution
- Oil spills
January 30th, 2020 at 4:07 PM ^
I mean, everyone knows that we still use non-renewable energy to make electricity. Power plants are far more efficient than the ICE.
