Super Bowl Prediction, Winter Storm Watch, BBQ and Beverage Thread
Mates
We are just about a week out from the Super Bowl. It'll be indoors in Atlanta with the NE Bradys playing the LA Rams. The Bradys are favored by 2 1/2 points. The over/under is 57 1/2 points. I saw some of the other things people can bet on such as MVP, who scores first TD, half time predictions, and many others. Rather creative. They say 80% of the folks are picking the Bradys.
Saturday night BBQ and beverage thread is not to be forgotten. BBQ is lit and we have burgers, lamb loins and peppers going.
Winter storm headed our way, maybe yours too. Looking like a foot and a half of snow or more starting tomorrow. Sons split and stacked wood and the wood stove is stoked.
3 Questions tonight:
1. Whose your pick in Super Bowl 53? What other predictions do you have about it?
2. What is on the grill tonight? In your cup?
3. Storm coming your way? Prepared for it?
Hope you are having a wonderful weekend despite the hockey team's first period.

1. Patriots take this one and Tom begins decorating a new hand. McVay pisses off Belichik with a successful trick play.
2. No grill but I want some hot wings Gordon Ramsay style. Drinking Wiseacre beer from Memphis.
3. Nope. Best of luck.
Cheers and Go Blue!

Tiny Bomb?
You got a recipe to these Ramsay wings?
January 27th, 2019 at 12:46 PM ^
It was Ananda, the IPA. Oddly enough I'm not a fan of Tiny Bomb.
And don't have a recipe for you. what I do have is a hilarious YouTube video of Gordon Ramsay getting interviewed while eating hot wings.
Easily one of the funiwfun things I've seen in a while.
January 27th, 2019 at 3:43 PM ^
Yeah, I watch Hot Ones weekly. It was a great episode.

1. Pats win and take the over.
2. Beef brisket.
3. Yes (Detroit). I'm ready for the snow, not the bone chilling cold.
January 27th, 2019 at 2:43 AM ^
Why not chicken brisket?!
January 27th, 2019 at 3:46 AM ^
I don't eat pork, so I'm conditioned to put a "beef" prefix in front of most meats I eat. If there's chicken brisket though, let me know and I'll throw it on the grill as well!
January 26th, 2019 at 8:17 PM ^
1. Patriots, 'cuz Brady
2. Ate out at Isalita in Ann Arbor tonight
3. Storm is coming, and I swear to sweet baby Jesus, if my kids stay home on Monday, too, I might kill one of them...
January 26th, 2019 at 8:31 PM ^
they will probably close schools up here on monday. however, homeschool never closes unless the roof caves in. so far, so good. the xm kids will have school no matter the weather. they may have to dig their way to the barn in the morning, too. that'll be a treat for them.

Homeschool Pro: No Snow Days
Homeschool Con: The Teachers Suck No Matter What
;-)
January 26th, 2019 at 8:52 PM ^
truth be told, the homeschool teachers are in love, and have been for going on a quarter century.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:25 PM ^
I wasn't home schooled, but my teachers were usually in love, too, though not necessarily with each other. Sometimes they were in love with the principal.
January 27th, 2019 at 12:27 AM ^
Homeschool pro: when our children know the weather is going to be good, they get up early and are usually almost done by breakfast.
Homeschool con: paying taxes to undereducate everyone else's kids and not getting a dime of it to overeducate your own
January 27th, 2019 at 6:42 AM ^
prosuggestion: when the children get older, do a co-op with the local school so that your athletic children can do football, wrestling, hoops, etc and you can enjoy some of the benefits of what you are paying for in the local gov't school. it has worked out very well overall for us so far. there are other benefits but they might be best discussed off-list out of respect for the general rules of posting.
January 27th, 2019 at 11:00 AM ^
Love homeschooling hypocrisy. I send my kids to private school, to be transparent. I know lots of teachers and would suggest you benefit from your sales tax educating the masses. Do you ever complain about your tax dollars not benefiting you because your aren’t mugged, murdered, raped? No? I see....

Watching NHL All Star game for first time in years. They play 3 on 3 now and with 3 teams? wtf is this? I miss the old days when the Wings stars would make this a fun game. I don't even know these players.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:38 PM ^
I hear ya. With as fast as al these kids are these days it makes for some dynamic scoring opportunities though.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:56 PM ^
I guess it's a 4 team tournament. First game ended 10-4. Absolutely no defense and tons of breakaways. I guess it was kind of entertaining. It will be interesting to see if the finals is more competitive.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:06 PM ^
Jimmy Frickin Howard representing the Wings? Why not Dylan Larkin who would have monster numbers on a good team? Howard is going to get lit up.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
Howard is playing great so far. Hope he can keep it up!
January 26th, 2019 at 10:49 PM ^
Bad take. The reason they play 3 on 3 is the same reason they should play flag football or 7on7 for the NFL.
And if you don't know who any of the players are you are not a hockey fan... you are a bandwagon wings fan.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:24 PM ^
1. Patriots take the Super Bowl.
2. Ate at a Hibachi Chinese Buffet tonight. Pretty decent actually.
3. Bring on the snow. I have a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and would love to get some fun in the snow. Only problem is I have to fly out Tuesday night so hopefully it's gone by then
January 27th, 2019 at 1:49 PM ^
1. Patriots and might not even be close.
2. Tonight I making a wine braise of chicken thighs and mushrooms. The first glass of Cotes du Rhone is for the braise, the rest is for Yossarian. Tomorrow it is supposed to snow all day and we will have on a pot of kapusta (sauerkraut) with fresh kielbasa all day. After the aroma tantalizes us for several hours we will enjoy that with a Dark Horse Plead the Fifth Imperial Stout and then head out into the subzero night to clear the snow. After that I might reward myself with a couple fingers of Pappy.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:25 PM ^
1. Pats in kinda boring one. 33 -17
2. Tri tip. Mike Hess Solis (IPA local)
3. Nope. Santa Ana's right now. 70's
January 26th, 2019 at 8:30 PM ^
I didn't even have to click to know it was you, XM.
Question: how much of your menu was raised on your property?
We are enjoying a homemade meal brought by our dear friend. One of the small benefits of having newborns in the home. (Along with the endless cuteness)
January 26th, 2019 at 8:32 PM ^
congrats again on those twins.
as to the menu, the beef and lamb are home grown and processed. the peppers are store bought. we have already gone through all that we had grown this summer.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:39 PM ^
Thank you!
That is awesome. When my wife was in vet school we shared some livestock with one of her classmates who worked on a farm. We got half a steer, half a pig and twelve whole chickens. It was meat for our family for a solid year and tasted great. It's what really got me into real bbq.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:44 PM ^
you would not be the first mgoblogger to stop by the farm and get a 'care package' of beef, lamb, chicken and some eggs. just sayin'.
January 26th, 2019 at 11:47 PM ^
man, I would love to stop by. The care package makes my mouth Water.
Question: I have been a chicken shit when it comes to bbq lamb. For an amateur like me, how do you recommend I bbq?
patriots
koomboocha
San Diego.- all good.
January 27th, 2019 at 6:35 AM ^
i would defer any great takes on bbq'ing lamb to one of the many genuine bbq experts on this list. my bbq of lamb is so simple you're going to say 'what? that's it?' last night's cuts were the tiny equivalent to cooking porterhouse steaks. its just that it takes 10 of them to weigh 2 lbs instead of 2 of them like the porterhouses would. so i put a small amount of bbq on the cuts and bbq them on low heat for roughly 5 min/side. you can tell by look and feel when they are done. we're a true medium-rare family in that regard. there was joy in bbq mudville last night.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:31 PM ^
1. Pats in a second half pull away. Take the over.
2. Sirloin and Patagonia shrimp, Deshutes Fresh Haze
3. Grand Rapids Area...ready as I can be. Tuned the snowblower today.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:32 PM ^
BBQ ribs tonight. Cured 2 days ago. Confit in pork fat yesterday. Grilled today. Sauce is a grilled fig ancho stout bbq sauce. The in laws were over so I thought I’d make them happy, and her happy. Drinking ninja vs unicorn (live in Michigan so a real treat) and lagavulin 16
January 26th, 2019 at 9:33 PM ^
When I drank Scotch, I loved lagavulin.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:35 PM ^
I'd be surprised if they Patriots didn't win comfortably, mostly because of the loss in the SB last year.
Monster Energy Drink. Need all the energy to keep up with the kids post-surgery.
As prepared as I can be, at least there will be zero snow removal for me as I am handicapable.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:40 PM ^
surgery? hopefully nothing too serious and that it was successful!
January 26th, 2019 at 8:46 PM ^
Thanks, brother! It was a hip resurfacing surgery. Had it just over a week ago, it's been a bit rough but is feeling better as if late. Just difficult to wrap my head around as I'm in my early forties!
January 26th, 2019 at 8:49 PM ^
resurfacing? is that a replacement of the cartilage on the contact points?
i wonder if/when i'll need to replace the parts. figure the longer i keep moving the longer i put that off. no grave aches and pains that seem to call for that but time will tell.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:04 PM ^
So they resurface the head (twss) of the femur and put a metal cap on it. The socket is fitted with a metal shell. Different from a replacement where the remove the top of the femur.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:41 PM ^
You had you a Birmingham! I had one almost 6 years ago in my late 30’s. I play basketball twice a week. No more arthritic pain or limitations.
January 26th, 2019 at 9:48 PM ^
I did! Oh man, so nice to hear from someone who is active afterwards!
Went from playing Div III Club Hockey last year at this time to being the old man with a hip surgery!
Thanks for sharing your recovery, it's very inspiring.
January 26th, 2019 at 10:01 PM ^
It took a while. Definitely do all of your rehab and maintenance exercises! I have a smaller range of motion in that leg but no pain other than if I have a very awkward step (like missing a step or stepping off a curb). I set off the occasional metal detector, but I got my active life back after years of suffering. I play hoops with no real limitations. My game has naturally transitioned to the below-the-rim portion of my life, but I will go up and slap the glass when sufficiently provoked and the hip doesn’t interfere.
January 26th, 2019 at 10:04 PM ^
I definitely will. I have my first PT appointment on Tuesday and have been doing the home exercises as the hip will permit.
Looking forward to running a few miles this fall and lacing up the skates at this time next year.
January 26th, 2019 at 8:37 PM ^
No grilling tonight. Rack of Ribs tomorrow while enjoying temps around 70. Sipping some Henry McKenna bourbon and 7. Going with the Bradys, the bus is bound for glory yet again and I ain't getting off. Already got the 2" thick victory ribeyes dry aging for the big day. Stay warm and safe my fellow mgobloggers up north.
GO BRADYS

NE. NFL needs a 41 YO Super Bowl Champ from a team many dismissed this year.
No BBQ. Sous Vide pork in a really nice maple soy mustard garlic marinade.
Reducing the stock from cooking with Opal apples.
No alcohol tonight.
