Summer Friday Nights Are Great - What's on Tap for the Weekend (and in your cup/BBQ)?

Submitted by xtramelanin on July 24th, 2020 at 8:05 PM

Mates,

Wonderful weather here in summer opens up all sorts of outdoor fun - boating, swimming, fishing, camping, and even comet watching (last night, not so great though).  You/we collectively complain during the winter about the weather so we better be taking advantage of our awesome Michigan summer right now.

Normally we would ask what's in your cup, but with the thread earlier this week about 'first drink', I'm a little reluctant to tout that too much - Folks that have put that part of their life down deserve honor for the self-control.  Glad for them. That said, in moderation an adult beverage is a pleasure in life, as is a cool glass of water or a good cup of coffee.

Football news this week for the XM house included two coveted offers for our 2021 son.  Smaller schools that he really likes and when one of the coaches mentioned the annual value of their specific offer, it really was the first time I'd quantified it in dollar terms.  That's a lot of money we won't have to come up with and that dear son would get to play his favorite game.  We'll see how it all goes, but very happy for him.  Mind you, not as cool as an academic scholarship, such as one of our fellow blogger's son's had for U of M, Chem Engineering.  That's big brain stuff, like many of you are.

Tonight's questions are fairly standard:

1.  What is the schedule of (fun) events for you and yours this weekend?

2.  What are you putting on your BBQ or in your glass this fine evening.

Have a great weekend,

XM

Love these posts BTW (drinking Patron, club soda and lime for National Tequila Day).  If, during spring training, someone said the Tigers would be one game out of first place on July 24th, I would have been ecstatic!  So, I choose to be ecstatic tonight.

I have lived long enough to have experience two horribly bad periods of Tiger baseball.

My biggest concern is to win the first game of the year just so we don't go across calendars with a below .500 record.

Getting to 2-1 or 3-2 may be the best hope now.  I remain optimistic but facts can be a downer.

We have softball games Saturday and Sunday with our 14 year old daughter. Tonight is a local Mexican restaurant with my wife for margaritas and tacos. Tomorrow will be ribs on the grill and a few Oberons. Sunday will be wife’s choice on the grill and Oberon for me.

My wife called from the mega liquor store asking if I needed to restock the whiskey supply.  I said I did and gave her some suggestions:  Four Roses Single Barrel, Smoke Wagon Small Batch, and Angels Envy.  She brought home a bottle of each.  Going to be a good weekend.

MGoOhNo, I've been trying to reach you. You said in the wall of shame thread that you didn't get your book and shirt last year. I emailed the address associated with your mgoblog account but haven't heard back. If you missed your stuff I'd like to figure out why and get it to you! Please reply to the email or reach out.

Floating the river with friends tomorrow. Tonight, there's chicken on the traeger and Head Full of Dynomite from Freemont brewing in my glass. It's beautiful here in eastern Washington!

tuesday was a cool day, they both came in that day.  son was very happy about all of that as these were the 2 he had coveted the most of those that are on the table right now.   and i'll say it again, i just hadn't quantified what it meant in dollar terms for these scholarships.  the oldest boy has a small athletic scholarship and a more meaty academic one, but this son's scholarship offers are a big deal, especially if you put a ' x 4' after the number.

What, pray tell, is on the BBQ?

I won’t get back to Michigan and “the water” until mid August for my family get together.  Couple generations having a shindig.

only BBQ with burgers, but there's a catch.  the burgers are our black angus, grass fed, organic (no hormones/vaccines) beef.  i am rightly accused of bias, but off the grill rare/med rare, on cherry sourdough toast with cheese, avocado, etc. makes it pretty tremendous for my simple tastes.

Watching the Cubs now. For the last two seasons (before this one), my husband has worked security for the Cubs. He was at the end of his life career, probably earlier than he wanted, so he decided to pursue his boyhood dream of working at Wrigley. He really didn't care what he did, he just wanted to get on the EL train and head to Wrigley every day. It's been great fun for him - he even had his 15 minutes of fame when he was the main character in a barstool sports video, taking away a giant cup snake in the bleachers -- it was pretty epic! He's gotten to meet a lot of old Cubs, and was on the field during the 2018 playoffs, acting as security for the ESPN camera crew. Other than those moments, though, it's not a glamorous job, but he does love being in the bleachers with the peoples. Anyway, he's wistful tonight, watching this game.

Watching our son play is one of the great joys of his life. My husband played in high school, so he knows the game well and the two of them have been playing catch since my son was 5. They still play catch, but now, since my son has been home and without a catcher, my husband comes home with bruised hands because he's just not used to catching actual pitches.

+1 to all three of you, I enjoyed playing catch years ago with each of my own 3 kids when they were young; now it's every chance I get with my granddaughter, which isn't often enough.

My oldest just sent me a picture about 15 minutes ago. She's always lived and loved baseball and softball, so when I visited her on her birthday a few days ago she proudly showed me the bruise on her calf where a bad-hop grounder during her coed league game smacked her pretty hard the night before as she played 2nd base.

Tonight she sent a pic of how the bruise has moved down her leg to near her ankle.

My question: Should I tell her to rub more dirt into it?

Tonight, watching the padres game. Can’t wait to see what this young talented team can do

for the grill, getting a slab of ribs. First time cooking ribs, was tentative because I am not great on the grill. I’m told to put in the oven for 20 at 250, grill each side for 2-3 mins and apply the sauce.

Ps- regional mlb coverage is not showing the padres game.
