Steve Luke wins the 2009 174 lb NCAA title!

Steve Luke just brought home an individual title for the University of Michigan. A great season by the senior. Also, Brent Metcalf was upset by Darrion Caldwell, the biggest wrestling upset since Owings over Gable.

Michfan1997 explained just about all you need to know about Metcalf, I'm not sure how Caldwell was in HS, but he is very talented, funky like a Nick Simmons or Max Askren. Metcalf had wrestled Caldwell twice this year already, and had absolutly destroyed him. Pinned him once and teched him another time. I have no idea why he didn't beat him this time, but both are juniors and I can imagine this will only motivate Metcalf into training his balls off in the offseason. I'm anxiously awaiting their inevitable match at the NWCA All-Star meet early next year, because judging by what happened after the match, there will be a lot of bad blood between the 2.

Good job by Luke and sorry to sound stupid but is either caldwell or meltcalf from michigan how did we do overall. I'm guessing Iowa won right.

in the history of the state of Michigan. He was a 4x undefeated state champion (228-0) from Davison, Michigan. He was NCAA Champ last season, but fell in the finals this year. Iowa won. Michigan was in 12th going into the finals. Luke's national title might move them to 11 or 10 in the final standings. A nice season from a young team.

Caldwell was running with his back to Metcalf and as time ran out did some gymnastics, Metcalf was chasing him and hit him mid-air causing him to land awkwardly. I personally blame Caldwell, as celebrating like that before the match is even over displays an incredible lack of class, also, I have a man crush on Metcalf.

Congratulations to Luke -- he's a great wrestler and worthy of being a national champion. I had hoped Miller might be able to pull off the upset, but there's always next year. As a Central fan, I'm cautiously optimistic about next year -- a top 5 finish might be in the cards.
