Stadium Experience - Week 2

Submitted by Yostal on September 10th, 2023 at 7:07 PM

In my mind, many of the issues I had with the stadium experience in Week 1 improved in Week 2.

  • The video board switched back to a blue background with maize writing (I presume Week 1 was for Maize Out purposes) and was much easier to read.
    • I still wish the stats board was generally a straightforward set of stats like yardage numbers, TOP, etc., with occasional cut-ins on the deeper stats like TFL, completions, etc.
  • The audio was better.  The on-field microphones cut out less frequently, and the center channel audio worked much better (you could hear all of what Woodson said in the defensive hype video, unlike last week.)
    • Pregame timing is still off, the helicopter flyover happened right during the first twenty seconds of the James Earl Jones video.
    • Still too heavy on the reliance on the on-field DJ at the expense of the band.  I understand this is an old man complaint, but you can balance those things better.
  • I still miss the "Guess the Year" game, but the helmet shuffle was back, and the catch-a-punt was fine.
  • The out-of-town scores were better because they focused on the Big Ten and Top 25 scores, which only had Week 2 data in it.
  • I like Victor the Frisbee dog, I like it more that it upsets Michigan State fans for some reason.

I'm still hopeful this will continue to improve over the season, but it does seem like they heard some of the complaints of last week, or realized they were bad.

Next week with the new lights will bring new challenges/experiences as well.

I agree that the out of town scores were better. I still would just eliminate games that haven't started yet, but that may be a style choice.

The stats are still basically worthless to me. It's just too much. I would like total yards, passing yards, rushing yards. Maybe third down conversion rate. Maybe during TV timeouts cycle through the rest, but I think keeping it simple is the way to go.

One other thing that was interesting to me was that I had Verizon signal all game which I never have. I was in row 70 instead of 45 like normal, but it was interesting. Anyone else have improved cell signal?

The scoreboard was improved, but could still use some further improvements.  The stats section should show total-rushing-passing yardage by default (with occasional rotations to show details).  The other-games scores was better than last week, but still showed some future game times and old scores repeatedly.

Last Sunday, I wrote an email to [email protected] complaining about the other-scores section and received a response indicating they were going to change it.  I don't know if other people emailed them about the issue or if they were monitoring mgoblog, but at least they are willing to accept feedback.

Another old man ...

1. Great weather - no one can control that, yet.

2. Victor the Frisbee dog was great - all out effort.

3. Scoreboard - getting better. Took time to realize they were rotating them in an effort to get in more data.

4. Audio 1 -was ok. Don't mind the DJ, since it is really for the undergrads and that is the type of music they like and if it helps bring them and keep them at the game, no problem.

5. Audio 2 - could the guy who is the emcee use one of those mics with a screen or guard or otherwise add small half beat when he speaks. He seems to be in such a hurry and wants to impart a sense of urgency that he is literally spitting out his words and running them together. As I noted I'm old and figured it is my hearing but the younger people around me (all in their teens and twenties) also couldn't understand what was being said, just that he seemed amped up. Again, maybe a generational thing - but he might do well with a setting of 8-9 and not always at 11 on his speed and volume.

6. Music option at halftime. I'm fine with choosing popular music that the kids want to hear, but a lot of those songs are not written to be played by a brass band with helping of woodwinds. If the band wants to play contemporary music, great, and if they can get someone to foot the royalty fee even better, but stuff from K-pop and other modern groups really need to consider adding a synthesizer keyboard or so other instruments that can carry the melody better.

I'll go back to shaking my fists at the clouds.

They don’t cut out the audio of Mr. Brightside soon enough to let the crowd sing. Go back to the way it was dammit!! I will say the atmosphere was great and the crowd was into even though UNLV was obviously overmatched. I have been to some snoozers of the early season games. Winning the Big Ten and kicking OSU’s butt 2 years in a row obviously makes a huge difference. Fans actually want to come to games now.

There were lots of people who stood up in our section for the entire first quarter.  I can understand people standing on critical downs and during critical games, but this was UNLV.  I felt bad because the couple next to us were older and couldn't stand the whole time, so they couldn't see anything and left after the first quarter and told us they weren't coming back.  They weren't irate, but you could see their disappointment and their sadness that they couldn't see the game.

The red hat guy is holding a clock mounted to a pole.  They did put the time on the scoreboard but it wasn’t the easiest to find and it was often a few seconds off the red hat guy clock.  Each  stoppage of play clocked at 2:45 and 3:30 at end of quarters.

one day they will just keep the game clock running during the commercials.

I was unable to attend yesterday, did people get through the gates faster? That was my biggest complaint from week 1. We lined up at the corner of stadium and main at 11:35 and weren’t past the gates until 12:05. I don’t recall that ever taking that long.

We use paper tickets, but it seems a lot of people are trying to pull tickets up on their phone and they don’t have service (or it’s very poor service) so it takes forever. The person scanning tickets last time wouldn’t allow us to pass the guy waiting to load his tickets in front of us even though we just had to scan quickly to get in, so everyone was just stuck there waiting.

I had thought we could be in the stadium in just a few minutes.

The lady directly in front of me was clueless, it took well over a minute to get two of her three phone tickets scanned plus numerous attempts on her third ticket. The ticket scanner person finally saved her in.  I had 5 tickets on my phone and had no problems; all five of us were in within 15 seconds.

One thing I meant to mention in the first week’s stadium experience thread was that it appears they’ve expanded the student section again.  I am in section 34 near the top and years ago they expanded the student section to halfway through 34, displacing many season ticket holders.   Then they shrunk the section again and those seats became public.  But this year, it seems they’ve made that half student section again and this means I’m yet again a breath away from having them displace my seats if they expand to all of 34 (I’ve had the seats for 23 years and love the location). Just wondering if anyone else noticed the slight expansion.

I like some of the videos they show.  Original stuff that is more entertaining than purchased stuff they use at pistons games.  It seems to fit the til too era.

It would be nice if they showed the stats during the many timeouts/other interruptions in play.  Instead they do other things like honoring teams/individuals, games like the punt catch, helmet guess, etc.  I find myself having to look away from the play to the end zones in between plays to see any stats.  It would also be nice if the "Greatest University in the World" could get adequate cell service/WiFi.   I have been to a lot of stadiums over the years, and this is only a problem at Michigan.

But overall an improvement. Still might be better to just to throw some of the key stats on some boards in the blue spaces where the suites are.  Better sight lines to them and it's wasted space although aesthetically nice.

These two home games - UNLV and BG - are the ones I won’t attend in person this season.

Hoping things keep improving and are settled down for Rutgers / Homecoming and the rest of the season.

The on field DJ got lots of attention. It's a great gig if you can get it but I prefer the band going out there occasionally. This is not an old man complaint because some kind of tradition needs to be maintained.

I suppose gone are the days when Sweet Caroline is played in between times outs.

Oh well, its great to be a Wolverine! Who's got it better than us?!

For scoreboard ideas, I would like to see a listing of the numbers and names of the M players on the field, especially since there are no starting lineups announced any more.  I haven't found any give-away or for-sale programs anywhere, and Harbaugh plays so many players that it's hard to know all the numbers.  This is a heck of a lot more important than some of those stats.

And what is up with cell service?  After 20 years or so, you would think that some provider would get it right.   Last year when I had a security problem, the security group couldn't even call themselves.

50 feet if I'm reading this right.

From the link:

The plan approved by the Regents called for a bowl-type stadium to take advantage of the natural characteristics of the site. Three sides of the stadium would be completely below grade, with the playing surface fifty feet below grade. On the west, north and south sides, entrance to the stadium at the top row of seats would be at street level. Though modeled in part on the Yale Bowl, Michigan Stadium would not be a true oval. Instead, the seating along the sidelines would be parallel to the playing field, bringing the fans as close as possible to the action. The stadium would consist of 44 sections with 72 rows seating 72,000. A cement concourse would ring the stadium.
