Spencer Hall's Top Whatever

Submitted by dnak438 on

Spencer Hall has a column that is sort of the opposite of TWIS, called "Top Whatever." It's pretty amusing (http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/9/25/13043888/tennessee-volunteers-florida-gators-2016):

Here's his bit on Michigan, but the whole thing is worth reading, I think:

3. Michigan

Ran for 326 yards on Penn State, beat PSU 49-10, and only seemed to be troubled by the psychological trauma of occasionally having to get hit by a giant kicker.

I got hit by a nose tackle that can kick.

Michigan is: One of those teams where you can’t figure out how they beat teams so badly, just by looking at the box score. This is bad for everyone else, because it means UM’s a three-phase beast capable of staying in games even when one part misfires.

Oh, and that Colorado team they struggled with for a while last week? Upset Oregon in Eugene, 41-38. Jim Harbaugh’s teams are making other teams good by skin-to-skin contact, and their excellence is literally contagious. (Penn State by 30 next week over Minnesota, easy.)

The box score thing is a Harbaugh trait to the core.  I remember during the 2011 coaching search looking through Stanford box scores, seeing tons of games where Stanford would outgain a team by like 75 yards and win by 28+ points.  Part of it is that his teams take care of the ball, but a big part is that they make opportunities count and play well on third down.

Yep. Remember after the horror of 2015 when all the Sparty fans were going off after the game "it wasn't a fluke, we deserved to win, look at the yardage totals" because they outgained us - but that was because Jabrill had like 150 return yards and Blake O'Neill had an 80 yard punt.

Jim doesn't care about any numbers but the score. He will identify your weakness and exploit it excrutiatingly until you are dead.

That description is an excellent summation of why I feel confident this year. This week will be a tough test, but I think we're going to annihilate State in EL. OSU will be our toughest test this year for obvious reasons.

Send a hit squad of Rashan Gary and Big Mike out for the kick return team. One or both of those fellas hitting you would take the spring out of your step!

"Oh, you want to come down and mix it up? Here's a welcome from our freshman class!"

The Ole by Jabrill was pretty funny. No doubt they'll have some fun with that in film stiudy.

Loved this!

One of the comments was talking about how Texas A&M seems best poised to be Alabama's annual random home loss this year.

Someone responded:

"Don't forget Auburn, who intends to kick 17 field goals in Bryant-Denny and win 51-49."

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, I don't know why I find this so funny but I was almost crying laughing.
